Diane (ID=7) (Nov 13, 2001 7:39:02 PM)

Diane (ID=7) (Nov 13, 2001 7:39:14 PM)
I'm good and you :)

lynne (ID=8) (Nov 13, 2001 7:39:23 PM)
I am on early tonight because I invited anotehr lady to join in tonight.

lynne (ID=8) (Nov 13, 2001 7:39:30 PM)
her son was jut diagnosed

Diane (ID=7) (Nov 13, 2001 7:40:02 PM)
I forgot about the time change it's only 7:30 on the east coast

lynne (ID=8) (Nov 13, 2001 7:40:05 PM)
We have been going pretty steadily but I think it slowed down for the summer

lynne (ID=8) (Nov 13, 2001 7:40:18 PM)
oh. How old is your CAPD child?

Diane (ID=7) (Nov 13, 2001 7:40:32 PM)
he just turned 10

lynne (ID=8) (Nov 13, 2001 7:40:33 PM)
Mine is now 9 but was diagnosed at 6

Diane (ID=7) (Nov 13, 2001 7:40:59 PM)
We just got the "official dx this summer

lynne (ID=8) (Nov 13, 2001 7:41:02 PM)
does he go to school? Or is he homeschooled?

lynne (ID=8) (Nov 13, 2001 7:41:06 PM)
oh, ok.

Diane (ID=7) (Nov 13, 2001 7:41:24 PM)
He goes to regular public school

lynne (ID=8) (Nov 13, 2001 7:41:38 PM)

lynne (ID=8) (Nov 13, 2001 7:42:29 PM)

Diane (ID=7) (Nov 13, 2001 7:42:45 PM)
No problem :)

Diane (ID=7) (Nov 13, 2001 7:43:12 PM)
This si the first Tues I have had free in months :(

lynne (ID=8) (Nov 13, 2001 7:43:13 PM)
I have been getting on because last year we decided to homeschool after some awful fighting with the schools here.

Diane (ID=7) (Nov 13, 2001 7:43:28 PM)
I've missed coming here

lynne (ID=8) (Nov 13, 2001 7:43:47 PM)
I have been making it a priority because of the success we had last year and are having this year.

Diane (ID=7) (Nov 13, 2001 7:44:04 PM)
I've not had a lot of problems with the school

lynne (ID=8) (Nov 13, 2001 7:44:29 PM)
My son was 2 years behind, and is now 2 years (and more in some subjects) ahead

lynne (ID=8) (Nov 13, 2001 7:44:40 PM)
Where are you from? We are here in VA.

Diane (ID=7) (Nov 13, 2001 7:44:46 PM)

lynne (ID=8) (Nov 13, 2001 7:44:59 PM)

Yes made me feel sooooooo good and him too of course :)

lynne (ID=8) (Nov 13, 2001 7:45:44 PM)
What was done differently this semester?

lynne (ID=8) (Nov 13, 2001 7:45:58 PM)
I mean, what do you thik helped him?

lynne (ID=8) (Nov 13, 2001 7:46:24 PM)
did you change how things were introduced to him? Or were things amplified for him?

Diane (ID=7) (Nov 13, 2001 7:46:39 PM)
He is also dyslexic and had intensive Orton-Gillingham tutoring over the summer

lynne (ID=8) (Nov 13, 2001 7:46:45 PM)
We were having success in the Public Schools when my son was amplified.

Diane (ID=7) (Nov 13, 2001 7:47:10 PM)
and he is getting preferential seating finally

lynne (ID=8) (Nov 13, 2001 7:47:13 PM)
WOW!! It looked like it worked.

Diane (ID=7) (Nov 13, 2001 7:47:31 PM)
and we are waiting on a FM system

Diane (ID=7) (Nov 13, 2001 7:48:21 PM)
I took him last month to our state school for the deaf to an educational audiolgist

Diane (ID=7) (Nov 13, 2001 7:48:48 PM)
and she is doing all the leg work to get it in place at school

lynne (ID=8) (Nov 13, 2001 7:49:09 PM)
An audiologist is who helped us the most too.

Diane (ID=7) (Nov 13, 2001 7:49:15 PM)
Yes the O-G titoring has been a Godsend

Diane (ID=7) (Nov 13, 2001 7:49:31 PM)

lynne (ID=8) (Nov 13, 2001 7:50:02 PM)
I think this chat starts at 8pm

Diane (ID=7) (Nov 13, 2001 7:50:10 PM)
he has a very minimal IEP

Diane (ID=7) (Nov 13, 2001 7:50:44 PM)
but gets very good support from resource if he needs it

lynne (ID=8) (Nov 13, 2001 7:50:54 PM)
Greg's IEP almost got us to court.

Diane (ID=7) (Nov 13, 2001 7:51:21 PM)

lynne (ID=8) (Nov 13, 2001 7:51:34 PM)

lynne (ID=8) (Nov 13, 2001 7:52:06 PM)
He likes being at home. Yes, he is 9

Diane (ID=7) (Nov 13, 2001 7:52:25 PM)

lynne (ID=8) (Nov 13, 2001 7:52:39 PM)

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 7:56:22 PM)

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 7:57:44 PM)
What time is it in Australia?

Steph in Aus (ID=10) (Nov 13, 2001 7:57:52 PM)
do you have a child with capd?

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 7:57:53 PM)
My daughter was just diagnosed a few weeks ago.

Steph in Aus (ID=10) (Nov 13, 2001 7:58:03 PM)
its almost midday in sydney

Steph in Aus (ID=10) (Nov 13, 2001 7:58:29 PM)
did they do the "time order click test"?

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 7:58:50 PM)
I keep calling the school to set up a meeting but... they are busy people

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 7:59:11 PM)
she had words put in her ears and had to repeat them back

Steph in Aus (ID=10) (Nov 13, 2001 7:59:20 PM)
Amazzing how busey they all get isnt it :-)

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 7:59:27 PM)
lol...no kidding

Steph in Aus (ID=10) (Nov 13, 2001 8:00:01 PM)
if its the test i am thinking of its a good one to quantify the issues she has

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:00:14 PM)
we have to get a teacher, special ed teacher, principal, social worker and me in a room at the same time to discuss this. Not a small feat!

Steph in Aus (ID=10) (Nov 13, 2001 8:00:17 PM)
who did the testing ? ...... an audiologist?

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:01:06 PM)
the first voice was normal. the second voice sounded muffled and the third voice was in a room full of people and noises

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:01:17 PM)
audiologist at teh hospital

Steph in Aus (ID=10) (Nov 13, 2001 8:01:21 PM)
yes ... that is a good test

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:01:35 PM)
It's called a SCAN

Steph in Aus (ID=10) (Nov 13, 2001 8:01:41 PM)
Well good luck getting them in the room

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:01:44 PM)
I think?

Steph in Aus (ID=10) (Nov 13, 2001 8:01:46 PM)
ahhh so it is

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:01:47 PM)
then they put words in different ears and she had to repeat them back

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:02:24 PM)
like "cat" in the left ear then "plane" in the right. She didn't do well there.

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:02:44 PM)
she is also borderline hearing....to top it all off!

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:03:00 PM)
Greg got a 2%

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:03:12 PM)
so I'm here to get info about the tests that she needs done for her academic level

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:03:17 PM)
2%?

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:03:50 PM)
the scores were out of 6 with 4-5 being normal and 0 being the worst. she scored a 2

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:04:23 PM)
I take it you all have a child in the same situation?

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:05:00 PM)
oops...little guy needs juice...be right back.

Steph in Aus (ID=10) (Nov 13, 2001 8:05:51 PM)
i have two with these issues

Steph in Aus (ID=10) (Nov 13, 2001 8:06:14 PM)
they have a disorder called DSI

Steph in Aus (ID=10) (Nov 13, 2001 8:06:30 PM)
but low tone and the processing are the biggest issues of it all

Steph in Aus (ID=10) (Nov 13, 2001 8:07:35 PM)
mmmmm where is everyone

Steph in Aus (ID=10) (Nov 13, 2001 8:08:20 PM)

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:11:14 PM)
Mine does. She reads all the time but comprehension is tough

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:11:22 PM)
She loves to read tho

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:11:37 PM)

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:11:42 PM)
how is everyone tonight?

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:11:42 PM)
What are you doing to help her w/this.

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:11:47 PM)
She had to write a 500 essay on the weekend. It took ALL weekend!

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:11:51 PM)
fine Tricia, How are you?

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:11:57 PM)
good thanks...

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:12:13 PM)
I'm right at the beginning with this Cindy. I don't know what she needs yet.

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:12:14 PM)
How old is your daughter

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:12:14 PM)
I often times come into this chat room and no one is in here...

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:12:22 PM)
She's 9

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:12:27 PM)
Hi tricia

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:12:31 PM)
hello rae

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:12:38 PM)
my daughter is 10

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:12:41 PM)
I know the feeling tricia...hehe

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:12:43 PM)
what is her reading level

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:12:53 PM)
my son was recently diagnosed with APD...in SEptember

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:13:06 PM)
I haven't had her reading tested but from what I see she's very good at reading.

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:13:20 PM)
I have a IEP meeting tomorrow to see if they will give him one...fat chance I guess

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:13:25 PM)
I have known my daughter has had it since she was 6 years old......

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:13:35 PM)
I just found out a few weeks ago tricia

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:13:47 PM)
why wouldn't they give him a IEP Tricia

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:13:52 PM)
my son's fluency is on 6th grade level but his comprehension is below grade level...

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:14:04 PM)
they turned him down once before this year at start of year

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:14:11 PM)
he is in 5th grade

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:14:16 PM)
We did a very unscientific IQ test at home. She scored 130

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:14:22 PM)
We were turned down 2 years in a row.

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:14:38 PM)
they just keep saying he is passing so

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:14:42 PM)
They said he wasn't failing enough.

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:14:50 PM)
that is what mine said lynne

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:14:54 PM)
He doesn't have to fail to have a IEP

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:14:55 PM)
What a joke!

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:15:05 PM)
I was told she couldn't have special ed because she wasn't failing....yet!

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:15:05 PM)
I know I read that in IDEA

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:15:11 PM)
me too rae

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:15:28 PM)
But some counties say they can't test unless they have evidence to show they aren't keeping up.

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:15:32 PM)
thats not true, I would keep pushing the school

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:15:34 PM)
my son has been diagnosed with ADHD, CAPD, and a expressive and receptive langauge disability

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:15:54 PM)
he is two years behind age level in vocabulary

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:16:00 PM)
Where do you live Lynne

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:16:01 PM)
lack of funding is the reason

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:16:12 PM)
in VA

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:16:19 PM)
I live in PA

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:16:21 PM)
ok, I'm next door....NC here

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:16:32 PM)
must be something with states ending in A....LOL

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:16:36 PM)
We have been through sooo much with the schools here.

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:16:37 PM)
I'm the lonely Canadian here...hehe

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:16:54 PM)
Cindy are you the one I chatted with the other day?

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:16:55 PM)
Ontario....ends in a vowel anyway...

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:17:04 PM)
Was it in the morning

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:17:08 PM)
yes

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:17:19 PM)
If it was last Tuesday we may have

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:17:28 PM)
so I need to get her reading and comprehension tested?

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:17:37 PM)
not sure...I was thinking it was last week sometime

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:17:41 PM)
yes rae

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:18:12 PM)
we have government testing here for grades 3 and 6. She got 3 out of 4 in reading, writing and a 2 out of 4 in math

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:18:27 PM)
My daughter is 2 yrs behind in reading and comphrension

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:18:27 PM)
take her to a speech/language pathlologist they can assess for this

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:18:33 PM)
which is backwards of what I see here. She has an A+ in math

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:18:53 PM)
where do I find a speech language pathologist??!?!?!

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:18:56 PM)
Wht I don't understand is why a child has to fail first in order to receive any services. When we could have saved their feelings of self worth, etc. before it happened.

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:19:03 PM)
my son has a C in communication Arts (english) but he still is behind

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:19:33 PM)
she's been bringing home things with D on them. I think the teacher is doing it n purpose

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:19:41 PM)
most of the universities have them...speech/language clinics where they test that is where I took my son...the school should have one also

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:19:46 PM)
You don't have to wait Lynne, tell the school you want testing and the reasons behind it and they should do it

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:19:56 PM)
make it look like she's failing and she qualifies for special ed

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:20:04 PM)
I agree Lynne...especially children with low self esteem already

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:20:05 PM)
Greg had a scan done and he got 63% (normal was 100-64) and that was without the background noise, then he got 9% with background noise, and then he got 2% with background conversation.

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:20:08 PM)
if they don't do it, then tell them to pay for a private person to do it

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:20:25 PM)
He was labelled profoundly CAPD.

Josiane (ID=14) (Nov 13, 2001 8:20:29 PM)
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart) (IP = 172.148.52.181)

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:20:33 PM)
The schools still fought us.

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:20:44 PM)
Is he using a fm system

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:20:47 PM)
hello josiane

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:20:56 PM)
they have been me also lynne

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:20:57 PM)
We got one for 2 months.

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:21:07 PM)
I had to serve them with papers to get it though

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:21:10 PM)
only used it for 2 mths

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:21:15 PM)
half the teachers wouldn't use it.

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:21:18 PM)
or got it 2 mths ago

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:21:20 PM)
they lost it/

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:21:25 PM)
or so they said

Josiane (ID=14) (Nov 13, 2001 8:21:26 PM)

your kidding

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:21:27 PM)
they refuse to accept his ADHD diagnoses also...stating he doesn't exhibit enough disruptive behaviors in school

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:21:36 PM)
then when they found it, it was broke.

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:21:53 PM)
no, he had it for only 2 months.

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:22:04 PM)
what does disruptive behavior have to do w/anything

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:22:09 PM)
I heard that the FM system isn't effective in all children

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:22:13 PM)
they recommended Ear Robics and Fast for Word for my son

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:22:26 PM)
great, are they going to use it

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:22:31 PM)
then we decided after it took them 6 weeks to find it, and when they did it was broke, we pulle dhim from school.

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:22:35 PM)
I have read about fast forward on websites

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:22:39 PM)
they said he doesn't have ADHD because he isn't disruptive enough in school

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:22:50 PM)
IT worked wonders for Greg.

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:22:52 PM)
I don't know yet...I have to talk to the school tomorrow in meeting

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:23:01 PM)
question?

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:23:08 PM)
My school is finally using the earobics program once a week, and I have ask for the fastforward program

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:23:12 PM)
Lynne - fm system or fast forward?

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:23:17 PM)
do children with CAPD qualify under other health impaired?

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:23:27 PM)
it proved them wrong and they didn't like that. So, it just turned up missing that Sept.

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:23:32 PM)
fm system

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:23:50 PM)
2 years in kinder. and he still didn't know his abc's

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:23:57 PM)
they can Tricia, my daughter is under other health impaired

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:24:07 PM)
he got his unit in April and in June he was reading on a first grade level.

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:24:08 PM)
what makes them qualify?

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:24:10 PM)
If she could wear a pair of blinders and earplugs she could concentrate in a room full of kids!

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:24:34 PM)
just get your doctor to fill out a form saying that it could be medical related....the school should have a form for you to take to your doctor

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:24:41 PM)
that is what I did

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:24:54 PM)
We are now homeschooling him. He just achieved a perfect score in language on the state test this year.

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:25:05 PM)
ok..since they refuse to acccept ADHD I am going to have to go on the CAPD diagnoses

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:25:06 PM)
wow....

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:25:06 PM)
He took the CAT.

Josiane (ID=14) (Nov 13, 2001 8:25:12 PM)
Hi all. There are diffrent forms of ADD, my daughter is being tested Nov 26

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:25:20 PM)
cat?

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:25:22 PM)
great Lynne want to school mine also...LOL

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:25:25 PM)
He also, got a perfect score in Math Computation.

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:25:33 PM)
hahaha

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:25:45 PM)
great...I will take that as a yes....LOL

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:25:45 PM)
whata programs are you using lynne to homeschool your child

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:25:52 PM)
Lynne - waht is CAT?

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:26:00 PM)
I have to say, I was afraid to do it, but it has been worth every minute.

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:26:22 PM)
I have been using ABeka. It is a very phonics intense program.

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:26:24 PM)
I am not sure I can be patient enough though....plus a 4 and 3 year old running around

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:26:35 PM)
He is now reading on a 6th grade level and he is only in 3rd.

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:26:36 PM)
where do you find that program lynne

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:26:42 PM)
wow Lynne

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:26:58 PM)
A CAT is the California Achievement Test.

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:27:06 PM)
reading but what about comprehending lynne?

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:27:12 PM)
How long do you work w/him during the day Lynne

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:27:56 PM)
What about memory testing?

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:28:18 PM)
yeah..my son has short term memory issues

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:28:20 PM)
It is on the internet. WWW.ABeka.com. It is a Christian based program. Nothing real conservative just everyonce in a while it has reference to God. So, if that bothers you you might want to try the Spalding Method of Reading, writing and phonis.

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:28:33 PM)
do your children have trouble following directions?

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:28:36 PM)
yes

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:28:55 PM)
Does this program also work w/comphension and writing Lynne

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:28:57 PM)
If I give her more than two things in a row....she forgets all of it

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:29:01 PM)
my son scored in the 7th percentile on testing in following direction

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:29:05 PM)
He takes a comprehension test every week. He has never missed more than one. He has a page to read in 4 and a half minutes and 10 questions to answer.

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:29:08 PM)
so does my son rae

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:29:19 PM)
great lynne

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:29:30 PM)
I guess that's part of it too huh?

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:29:42 PM)
it sure is rae

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:30:03 PM)
It is a good program. The Spalding method is also great. They both work with the Englis phonograms and blends. There are 132.

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:30:12 PM)
does anyone know what affects the brainstem integration problems have on the child?

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:30:24 PM)
or what I may ask for in a IEP to help in that area?

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:31:27 PM)
I'm not sure what you are asking Tricia....sorry

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:31:43 PM)
brb

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:31:50 PM)
lynne, is the program very expensive

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:31:58 PM)
in my son's report it says he has brainstem integration problems but doesn't clarify what that is exactly

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:32:16 PM)
and how long do you work with your child during the day

Josiane (ID=14) (Nov 13, 2001 8:32:43 PM)
What is the difference betwen CAPD and ADD ? There both alike

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:32:58 PM)
does it have anything to do w/memory Tricia

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:33:01 PM)
closely related I think Josiane

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:33:02 PM)
no. The Spalding method book is about $18 and then A Beka is about $50 for the phonics and language. I wokd iwth Greg for about 2 hours. Sometimes less. Rarely more.

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:33:25 PM)
wow......great progress for a short amount of time....

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:33:28 PM)
I have my other 2 that I am doing this with too. They are 1st grade and 5th.

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:33:32 PM)
I am not sure...they said he has short term memory, decoding issues and brainstem integration issues

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:34:16 PM)
So did your children have non verbal IQ tests?

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:34:18 PM)
I know chucking, and repeating information seveal times, pre teaching the child

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:34:28 PM)
so if he has these what can the school do to help these areas?

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:34:33 PM)
helps w/children w/ capd

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:34:35 PM)
what is chucking?

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:35:02 PM)
I know they recommended pre-teaching

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:35:13 PM)
Maybe you could try having the child repeat what has just been said to them.

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:35:26 PM)
We had some success with that.

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:35:28 PM)
parroting

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:35:36 PM)
at least on verbal directions.

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:35:36 PM)
ok...can try that...but I really don't see the school doing that in a class of 26

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:36:00 PM)
I have a 504 plan for him and nothing there has even been implemented

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:36:16 PM)
so what is chucking?

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:36:25 PM)
I asked the teacher to make things more visual and she practically rooled her eyes....

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:36:27 PM)
true. Unless after she has explained she goes over to him and asks him to repeat. Maybe? I don't know how the teachers do it.

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:36:32 PM)
sorry...its chunking,

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:36:42 PM)
so what is it Cindy?

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:36:44 PM)
oops...rolled

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:36:50 PM)
I heard the 504's aren't that effective. Is that true.

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:36:55 PM)
yes very true

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:37:03 PM)
I know and IEP is held with high regards.

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:37:07 PM)
the school's look at them as a cancellation prize I think

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:37:12 PM)
I think its giving short explanations, repeating information

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:37:21 PM)
I'm not really sure,

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:37:26 PM)
so condensing basically

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:37:31 PM)
I think so

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:37:43 PM)
what is a 504?

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:37:55 PM)
I know, that all I had to do was call the school board and say it was about my son's IEP not being followed and I was put right through.

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:38:23 PM)
other suggestions, get your teachers outline on whata they are going to teach so you can go over the subject w/your child

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:38:25 PM)
But my girlfriend has a son with a 504 and they blow her off, big time.

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:38:27 PM)
a 504 is a student service plan recoginizing that the child should be a pretected handicap student and gives them accomodations and modifications

lynn (ID=15) (Nov 13, 2001 8:38:30 PM)
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart) (IP = 204.246.222.140)

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:38:39 PM)
and her son was failing much worse than mine.

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:39:04 PM)
hi Lynn

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:39:07 PM)
I also understand that a 504 is not like a IEP where it is as legal as a IEP,

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:39:14 PM)
right.

lynn (ID=15) (Nov 13, 2001 8:39:14 PM)
hi all

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:39:19 PM)
I don't know what the Canadian equivalent of a 504 is...

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:39:21 PM)
Hi lynn

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:39:22 PM)
our school really stinks with all this....problem is your child is either severely handicap or normal nothing for kids in the middle

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:39:36 PM)
Cindy, I have heard they aren't worth the paper they are written on.

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:39:39 PM)
I know, they are the ones that fall thru the cracks

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:39:44 PM)
they aren't lynne

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:39:46 PM)
that is what I have heard

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:40:04 PM)
I pushed soooo hard for an IEP. And finally got one.

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:40:12 PM)
Boy, did they try and stop me.

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:40:16 PM)
that is so true...when i asked the district for more accomodations I was told not to go overboard

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:40:32 PM)
that is what they are trying to do with me lynne

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:40:41 PM)
that sounds familiar tricia....we must be overreacting.

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:40:43 PM)
even the principal was caught "burying" evidence that supported our side of the case.

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:40:47 PM)
I am going to request a meeting every other month if I have too

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:40:51 PM)
I've heard that already

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:41:04 PM)
so their side would win.

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:41:13 PM)
I believe it lynne.

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:41:24 PM)
Lynne, do you think I would be overloading my daughter if she went to school full time and I also used the abeka program w/her at home

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:41:34 PM)
It was awful. It took a couragous teacher to come forward and tell what she knew.

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:41:56 PM)
not if you did only the phonics

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:41:59 PM)
well all I must go it was wonderful meeting all of you...have to finish preparing for meeting tomorrow

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:42:00 PM)
brb

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:42:10 PM)
If you tried the other stuff, you would

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:42:18 PM)
night, good luck tomoroow

Tricia (ID=13) (Nov 13, 2001 8:42:19 PM)
(This user has left DigiChat) (IP = 172.161.86.23)

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:42:45 PM)
what about reading, complhension and writing....would that be too much

lynn (ID=15) (Nov 13, 2001 8:42:51 PM)
I guess i am lucky. My child does not have an official diagnosi but the teacher is making adjustments already

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:43:03 PM)
thats great lynn...

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:43:11 PM)
how old is she Cindy

lynn (ID=15) (Nov 13, 2001 8:43:15 PM)
he had the CAPD test today

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:43:16 PM)
10

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:43:23 PM)
she is motivated to learn

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:43:23 PM)
what grade?

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:43:26 PM)
4th

lynn (ID=15) (Nov 13, 2001 8:43:35 PM)
he definately has issues

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:43:44 PM)
she goes to a tutor twice a week

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:44:02 PM)
she has been going to tutors for 4 years now

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:44:23 PM)
I would say use the Spalding method, unless she isn't a picky child. My older son wasn't taught the A Beka way and he thought the sharts were too babyish for him

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:44:41 PM)
charts were babyish. sorry.

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:45:14 PM)
My CAPD son spells and can "read" a word better than his 5th grade brother. I should say, sound out a word.

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:46:01 PM)
because he has been tought that a vowel in the middle of a syllable usually is short and a vowel atthe end is usually long.

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:46:53 PM)
and he learned this using the abeka program

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:47:12 PM)
and that ear can be said 3 different ways and when they are said that way.

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:47:12 PM)
adssssss

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:47:12 PM)
yes

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:47:35 PM)
Those are rules that these methods teach

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:47:46 PM)
ok.....

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:48:04 PM)
do you order these programs off the internet

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:48:11 PM)
lynne did your child have testng at school?

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:48:17 PM)
you can.

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:48:29 PM)
yes, he was tested at the school this year.

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:48:40 PM)
Hi Joy

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:48:41 PM)
he was tested before we pulled him.

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:48:41 PM)
what tests did they do?

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:48:48 PM)
he was 2 years delayed.

joy (ID=16) (Nov 13, 2001 8:48:56 PM)

Hi hansen

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:49:15 PM)
hi to newcomers

HansenWII (ID=17) (Nov 13, 2001 8:50:23 PM)
hi cindy, what are you chatting about

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:50:29 PM)
i keep reading about a chat with Dr J. Is that in this room?

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:50:34 PM)
then they just did a huge assessment on him and he blew them away. The tester told me, "I stopped at the college vocab. because he was upset that he didn't know 2 in the highschool level and he was becoming frustratesd"

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:51:13 PM)
I am looking for the tests they gave him.

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:51:17 PM)
Different things Hansen, just jump in

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:51:33 PM)
he tested high school level for reading? wow

HansenWII (ID=17) (Nov 13, 2001 8:51:35 PM)
Is this about the heart

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:51:44 PM)
yes hansen

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:51:49 PM)
Dr J chats on tuesdays in the am

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:52:01 PM)
oh...8:30 am???

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:52:04 PM)
See, our state just passed a law that if you are homeschooled you can't receive services from the public schools.

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:52:16 PM)
your kidding lynne

lynn (ID=15) (Nov 13, 2001 8:52:20 PM)
What state lynne?

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:52:21 PM)
that's stupid!

HansenWII (ID=17) (Nov 13, 2001 8:52:26 PM)
so everyone has heart problems

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:52:28 PM)
so, they just tested him in order to "boot" him.

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:52:34 PM)
VA.

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:52:48 PM)
You would think they would LOVE having less kids to teach.

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:52:56 PM)
our school board has to give you everything... books, computer, internet hookups.

Dale (ID=18) (Nov 13, 2001 8:52:57 PM)
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart) (IP = 172.143.26.47)

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:53:01 PM)
Instead they are punishing us.

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:53:12 PM)
I thought all schools were suppose to test all children regardless of where they lived and how they were getting a education

HansenWII (ID=17) (Nov 13, 2001 8:53:23 PM)
hi dale that is what I am looking for

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:53:39 PM)
It's not right. No, our state now says that Homeschooling is a form of private education.

Dale (ID=18) (Nov 13, 2001 8:53:45 PM)
hi

lynn (ID=15) (Nov 13, 2001 8:54:02 PM)
I homeschooled until this year. Loved it. The stae is required to let your child take any course they want here. You pay taxes. They cant participate in sports though.

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:54:14 PM)
Even kids in private school can recieve services from the public school system

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:54:39 PM)
I tell everyone, I didn't do this for religious reasons, I did it because they couldn't be trusted with my son and couldn't teach him.

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:54:46 PM)
not here any longer.

lynn (ID=15) (Nov 13, 2001 8:55:00 PM)
Your school might be trying to pull the wool over eyes

Dale (ID=18) (Nov 13, 2001 8:55:06 PM)
I took my daughter to the board of ed, they said there was nothing wrong

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:55:10 PM)
Lynn, I feel the same as you.

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:55:22 PM)
I have loved homeschooling these last 2 years.

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:55:38 PM)
Dale , I think we have all heard that one:0)

Cindy (ID=12) (Nov 13, 2001 8:55:41 PM)
Its awful we have to go thru this just to give our children a education

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:55:47 PM)
Doesn't it just frustrate you?

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:56:01 PM)
so true, Cindy.

lynn (ID=15) (Nov 13, 2001 8:56:26 PM)
We will go back to it in a heart beat if I feel my children need it. We moved over the summer though. This school district is awesome. So much help!

Dale (ID=18) (Nov 13, 2001 8:56:27 PM)
I'm trying to find helpful treatments, any advice?

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:56:30 PM)
And I paid $20,000 in taxes last year. You would think I could get something to show for it.

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:56:55 PM)
get a lawyer?

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:56:58 PM)
hahaha

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:57:12 PM)
Sorry, had to lighten up:)

HansenWII (ID=17) (Nov 13, 2001 8:57:28 PM)
dale I have heart problems but I have different problems than you

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:57:44 PM)
What are yours Hansen?

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:57:49 PM)
yes.

lynne (ID=11) (Nov 13, 2001 8:57:56 PM)
hi Carol.

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 8:57:57 PM)

Carol (ID=19) (Nov 13, 2001 9:06:06 PM)
My school did nothing after receiving the audiologists' results. Although, they did all the testing before them.

Cindy (ID=27) (Nov 13, 2001 9:06:09 PM)

Cindy (ID=27) (Nov 13, 2001 9:06:38 PM)

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 9:24:53 PM)
he uses an FM system in class and gets OT and Speech Lang

Lisa (ID=37) (Nov 13, 2001 9:24:57 PM)
I have been debating on whether to try it or not. My gut feeling tells me I shouldtry it dale but it is so costly I just do not want to waste my money on something like that if I will not see any improvement in school

lynne (ID=32) (Nov 13, 2001 9:25:01 PM)
We got some speech and lang. for him at his preschool.

Dale (ID=34) (Nov 13, 2001 9:25:22 PM)
there was a tremendous improvement

joy (ID=16) (Nov 13, 2001 9:25:25 PM)

Dale (ID=34) (Nov 13, 2001 9:25:43 PM)

joy (ID=16) (Nov 13, 2001 9:25:51 PM)

Dale (ID=34) (Nov 13, 2001 9:26:12 PM)

Lisa (ID=37) (Nov 13, 2001 9:26:47 PM)
Dale where I am in NJ they tell me four weeks at four hours a day will cost $6000

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 9:27:11 PM)

Dale (ID=34) (Nov 13, 2001 9:27:17 PM)
we went in NY

Dale (ID=34) (Nov 13, 2001 9:27:36 PM)

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 9:28:16 PM)

Lisa (ID=37) (Nov 13, 2001 9:28:20 PM)
Is that possible Dale?

Dale (ID=34) (Nov 13, 2001 9:28:29 PM)

Dale (ID=34) (Nov 13, 2001 9:28:37 PM)
and still pursing it

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 9:28:42 PM)
Not usually looked at as a medical impairment

Lisa (ID=37) (Nov 13, 2001 9:28:50 PM)
Lindamood Bell Dale has schools accross the country. I am near one inPhila

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 9:29:04 PM)

Lisa (ID=37) (Nov 13, 2001 9:29:11 PM)
Dale how are you approaching the insurance co?

Lisa (ID=37) (Nov 13, 2001 9:29:25 PM)
Did you do just an hour a day or four hours?

Dale (ID=34) (Nov 13, 2001 9:29:45 PM)

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 9:30:01 PM)
How do you go about that Dale?

Dale (ID=34) (Nov 13, 2001 9:30:09 PM)

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 9:30:15 PM)

Lisa (ID=37) (Nov 13, 2001 9:30:20 PM)
Dale since you have some experience with you daughter would you reccommend it to a parent who has a child with compreh problems ?

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 9:30:23 PM)
Dale did your child have alot of ear infections when younger?

Dale (ID=34) (Nov 13, 2001 9:30:32 PM)

Lisa (ID=37) (Nov 13, 2001 9:31:29 PM)
My son did not have ear infections either

Dale (ID=34) (Nov 13, 2001 9:31:37 PM)
i think my daughter inherited it from my husband

joy (ID=16) (Nov 13, 2001 9:32:00 PM)

Lisa (ID=37) (Nov 13, 2001 9:32:05 PM)

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 9:32:14 PM)
how did you guys determine the APD and not ADHD

Lisa (ID=37) (Nov 13, 2001 9:32:25 PM)
audiologist screening

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 9:32:28 PM)
i think part of my child's is from her father too. he has LD

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 9:32:51 PM)
My son had that, but was also diagnosed ADHD 3 yrs ago, APD last may

Dale (ID=34) (Nov 13, 2001 9:33:01 PM)
i read alot on the internet and it said it is often ingerited from the father

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 9:33:02 PM)
Meds never worked for him

Dale (ID=34) (Nov 13, 2001 9:33:20 PM)
are there meds for apd

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 9:33:30 PM)
Like what meds Dale?

Lisa (ID=37) (Nov 13, 2001 9:33:33 PM)
They said my son had add tried meds never worked then he got tested for apd and figured the add was a mis dx

Lisa (ID=37) (Nov 13, 2001 9:33:56 PM)
I never hear meds for apd

lynne (ID=32) (Nov 13, 2001 9:34:03 PM)
me either

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 9:34:16 PM)
That is what I am wondering, but he can't stay in the seat, of focus for a period of time

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 9:34:37 PM)
I never new their were meds for APD

Dale (ID=34) (Nov 13, 2001 9:34:48 PM)
there is a doctor who gives a med. His theory is that apd is due to an inner ear problem

Lisa (ID=37) (Nov 13, 2001 9:35:00 PM)
I think if you hear Dr J talk he says apd is an effect of something else. He says apd is usually in coneection with another disability

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 9:35:04 PM)
I asked the audiologist and she said no meds

Lisa (ID=37) (Nov 13, 2001 9:35:20 PM)
I think Dr J would say the same thing

Dale (ID=34) (Nov 13, 2001 9:35:24 PM)
i think its the drug for seasickness

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 9:35:28 PM)
what is the name of the med?

lynne (ID=32) (Nov 13, 2001 9:35:32 PM)
Why do we want a pill to make everything go away?

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 9:35:50 PM)
she said that she doesn't exhibit signs of ADD either

Dale (ID=34) (Nov 13, 2001 9:35:53 PM)
read the book "smart but feeling stupid"

lynne (ID=32) (Nov 13, 2001 9:35:53 PM)
Lets appreciate what we have. And how God has made us each different

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 9:36:06 PM)
I hear ya Lynne, I have been down the med road, and didn't like it. I was just curious

lynne (ID=32) (Nov 13, 2001 9:36:35 PM)
I tell my son that this is what challenge was dealt to him. Mine is my weight and some pride issues.

Lisa (ID=37) (Nov 13, 2001 9:36:47 PM)
I think we have to make the schools aware of apd and have them work for our kids instead of trying to fit our kids into a perfect little model student.

lynne (ID=32) (Nov 13, 2001 9:36:51 PM)
different but just as debilitating

debbie (ID=42) (Nov 13, 2001 9:36:58 PM)

I agree with Lisa

lynne (ID=32) (Nov 13, 2001 9:37:15 PM)
I homeschool because there was nowhere for my son to fit in and not feel stupid.

Dale (ID=34) (Nov 13, 2001 9:37:27 PM)
read the lindamood bell webpage

Lisa (ID=37) (Nov 13, 2001 9:37:27 PM)
Lynne how old is your son

lynne (ID=32) (Nov 13, 2001 9:37:33 PM)
My son use to beg and cry every morning for me not to send him to school.

Lisa (ID=37) (Nov 13, 2001 9:37:35 PM)
I will dale

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 9:37:42 PM)
It took me three years to get my sons school to help him. As soon as I got him off meds and walked in with the audiologist report, they saw it my way

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 9:37:46 PM)
I get the feeling that my daughter's teacher is not thrilled to have an LD kid in her class....mroe work for her

Dale (ID=34) (Nov 13, 2001 9:37:52 PM)

raewindsor (ID=9) (Nov 13, 2001 9:37:52 PM)
more

lynne (ID=32) (Nov 13, 2001 9:37:57 PM)
the kids were awful to him. and then the teacher started to verbally abuse him and mentally abuse him.

Lisa (ID=37) (Nov 13, 2001 9:38:23 PM)
That is awful lynne sorry to hear that

lynne (ID=32) (Nov 13, 2001 9:38:29 PM)

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 9:38:35 PM)
We had a teacher like that last year Rae, he hated going. This year there was a complete turnaround, with a better teacher

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 9:38:48 PM)
how sad Lynne

lynne (ID=32) (Nov 13, 2001 9:38:53 PM)
she did it in retaliation of me "ratting" on her for not using his FM unit.

Dale (ID=34) (Nov 13, 2001 9:39:10 PM)
i spend alot of time doing a lot of homework with my daughter it helps alot

lynne (ID=32) (Nov 13, 2001 9:39:16 PM)
It broke my heart to have him leave each day.

Lisa (ID=37) (Nov 13, 2001 9:39:21 PM)
lynne what area of the country are you in

debbie (ID=42) (Nov 13, 2001 9:39:28 PM)

lynne (ID=32) (Nov 13, 2001 9:40:10 PM)

Sarah told me one of her teachers dont use the FM unit...she just wraps up the mic and lays it on the overhead or book, yet Sarah still wears the headset........Woudln't that seam to make things harder for Sarah to hear since she is using the system and teacher isnt'?

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 9:41:38 PM)
Bye Rae

debbie (ID=42) (Nov 13, 2001 9:41:55 PM)

Lisa (ID=37) (Nov 13, 2001 9:42:47 PM)
debbie my son tells me the minute they are not using it and I call the school. He realizes when they do not use it they are doing something wrong so luckily he tells me right away

Dale (ID=34) (Nov 13, 2001 9:42:52 PM)
apd kids very often have sensory integration problems, ot wont cure the apd, but it will help

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 9:43:07 PM)

debbie (ID=42) (Nov 13, 2001 9:43:25 PM)

Dale (ID=34) (Nov 13, 2001 9:43:31 PM)
what is the fm unit

Lisa (ID=37) (Nov 13, 2001 9:44:00 PM)
My son does not like the head set because he cannot hear the discussions the teacher has in class with the whole class.

debbie (ID=42) (Nov 13, 2001 9:44:07 PM)
an FM unit is like a personal sound system the kids use in the classroom....

Dale (ID=34) (Nov 13, 2001 9:44:22 PM)
how do you get it

debbie (ID=42) (Nov 13, 2001 9:44:30 PM)
in my daughter's case she wears t aheadphone and the teacher wears a mic and the sound goes directly to Sarah's ears

Lisa (ID=37) (Nov 13, 2001 9:44:38 PM)
Audiologist reccommended it for my son

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 9:44:46 PM)
We thought the same with my son lisa, but found he is so easily distracted that he needs to just hear the teacher, that is it

Lisa (ID=37) (Nov 13, 2001 9:45:15 PM)
My son's teacher loves to use it this year because it helps with all the kids

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 9:45:16 PM)
does it help your son Lisa. My son doesn't like it, but deals with it

debbie (ID=42) (Nov 13, 2001 9:45:37 PM)
I hd to get the district audiologist involved to get the FM.....originally he told me Sarah couldnt have one, but HE was WRONG

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 9:45:41 PM)
All the other kids want it,

Lisa (ID=37) (Nov 13, 2001 9:45:42 PM)
My son realizes it helps him so he doesn't mind . He is older now and understands

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 9:45:57 PM)
how old Lisa?

Lisa (ID=37) (Nov 13, 2001 9:46:04 PM)
9 fourth grade

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 9:46:47 PM)
okay, mine is 8 and 3rd grade. He really complained last year, but the walk man type he likes better,

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 9:47:05 PM)
this year he is more accepting of it

Lisa (ID=37) (Nov 13, 2001 9:47:44 PM)
My sons teacher has alot of discussions with the class on current events so if he has a headset he cannot hear his classmates responsses and just hears the teacher and he doesn't get the whole conversation

debbie (ID=42) (Nov 13, 2001 9:47:54 PM)
Sarah is in 5th and she's starting to resist using the fm

Lisa (ID=37) (Nov 13, 2001 9:48:18 PM)
My son has the one with speakers in the corners of room they sit him near the speakers

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 9:48:24 PM)

can they keep up with the work

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 9:48:59 PM)
My son goes out for Spec ed resource, but is in a reg class

debbie (ID=42) (Nov 13, 2001 9:49:10 PM)
I think part of it is being different than other kids although now there is another girl in her grade with an FM also

Lisa (ID=37) (Nov 13, 2001 9:49:17 PM)
yes, my son does go out for reading to resource

Dale (ID=34) (Nov 13, 2001 9:50:13 PM)
i taught my daughter to read in kindergarden, her school doesnt do it till first grade. This was the best thing i could have done

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 9:50:30 PM)
My son was borrowing a personal FM from a highschooler that was accepted into Yale. I told him that, and it made him feel better. They tried him with the head set type befoe they bought it to make sure it would benifit him

Lisa (ID=37) (Nov 13, 2001 9:51:07 PM)
Has anyone tried interactive metronome?

Dale (ID=34) (Nov 13, 2001 9:51:19 PM)

lynne (ID=32) (Nov 13, 2001 9:52:52 PM)
I heard that learning piano is suppose to help too. There's something with the music that is suppose to help them time their speech and thinking

lynne (ID=32) (Nov 13, 2001 9:52:58 PM)
anyone try this?

lynne (ID=32) (Nov 13, 2001 9:53:25 PM)
metronome was the reason I was stated that makes this helpful

Lisa (ID=37) (Nov 13, 2001 9:53:30 PM)
My brother is a music teacher and he says it helps with focusing and multi tasking because of the way it is taught

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 9:53:43 PM)
interesting!

Lisa (ID=37) (Nov 13, 2001 9:53:49 PM)
You have to keep a beat and play at the same time

lynne (ID=32) (Nov 13, 2001 9:53:52 PM)
I have thought about piano lessons for a while now.

Josiane (ID=36) (Nov 13, 2001 9:54:00 PM)
What's it about Lisa?

Lisa (ID=37) (Nov 13, 2001 9:54:11 PM)
he says it is hard in the beginning but if they can get he hang of it it can help

lynne (ID=32) (Nov 13, 2001 9:54:19 PM)
maybe after Feb. when he test for his blackbelt and I no longer have to pay for his classes

Lisa (ID=37) (Nov 13, 2001 9:54:21 PM)
what do you mean Josiane

lynne (ID=32) (Nov 13, 2001 9:54:34 PM)
I can pay for lessons:0)

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 9:54:55 PM)
my son can play by ear, which is interesting. He has a key board and fiddles around, and ends up playing these songs. Maybe we have something here!!

Josiane (ID=36) (Nov 13, 2001 9:55:09 PM)
you answered... what's inter active metronome

Lisa (ID=37) (Nov 13, 2001 9:55:23 PM)
MY brother was like that debiann it sounds like your son has a giftt

Lisa (ID=37) (Nov 13, 2001 9:55:54 PM)
I believe though our children have apd God has blessed them with something else in life.

lynne (ID=32) (Nov 13, 2001 9:56:03 PM)
amen!!

lynne (ID=32) (Nov 13, 2001 9:56:14 PM)
My son is 2nd in VA state for karate.

Lisa (ID=37) (Nov 13, 2001 9:56:23 PM)
Just my opinion sorry if everyone does not agree

lynne (ID=32) (Nov 13, 2001 9:56:24 PM)
they say, he can see the "whole" person.

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 9:56:26 PM)
my dad plays by ear as well, so i think it was inherited. My son hates to sing though, and hates music class for that reason. he gets a bad grade because he won't participate

lynne (ID=32) (Nov 13, 2001 9:56:54 PM)
He is sooo much more visual than other "normal" children

Lisa (ID=37) (Nov 13, 2001 9:56:55 PM)
My brother hated to sing also doesn't mean he is not a good musician

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 9:57:34 PM)
I wish the music teacher would lay off him. She put him in the hall because he wouldn't sing. He was mouthing it

Lisa (ID=37) (Nov 13, 2001 9:57:58 PM)
My son hates art class

joy (ID=16) (Nov 13, 2001 9:58:15 PM)
thats interesting the music teacher at my daughters school is very rough on her

debbie (ID=42) (Nov 13, 2001 9:58:18 PM)
Lisa, Sarah things having APD is a good thing because that is how God mader her special...I tell her that she is very special

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 9:58:27 PM)
I guess we can' t like everything huh Lisa?!!

debbie (ID=42) (Nov 13, 2001 9:58:38 PM)
Idont tell her APD is good, but I do reinforce she is special

lynne (ID=32) (Nov 13, 2001 9:58:43 PM)
my son hates music too. He says he can't understand the words.

Lisa (ID=37) (Nov 13, 2001 9:58:55 PM)
debbie i do the same thing

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 9:59:17 PM)
they asked me that at the AUdiologist, if he liked music. I am not sure why

Lisa (ID=37) (Nov 13, 2001 9:59:34 PM)
That is interesting

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 10:00:01 PM)
maybe that is why Lynn, I never thought of it that way. The words are to fast, and he probably doesn't get what it is saying

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 10:00:05 PM)
makes sense

Dale (ID=34) (Nov 13, 2001 10:00:14 PM)
my daughter can learn songs much faster, than something she has read

Kathie (ID=43) (Nov 13, 2001 10:00:54 PM)
Hi Everyone, I did not know if you would still be on

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 10:01:03 PM)
Do you think I should talk with the music teacher, not to make a big deal with him

debbie (ID=42) (Nov 13, 2001 10:01:07 PM)
Dale, Sarah is the same way...she loves music and will learn things easier if we sing it in a song...it's amazing the tunes we've coem up with in the past

debbie (ID=42) (Nov 13, 2001 10:01:17 PM)

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 10:01:47 PM)

Kathie (ID=43) (Nov 13, 2001 10:05:30 PM)
I know I'm coming in late...Are you talking about music and CAPD kids? For the most -- do that like are dislike?

Kathie (ID=43) (Nov 13, 2001 10:05:59 PM)
I have a 10 year old with CAPD, and a 14 year old. Both girls.

debbie (ID=42) (Nov 13, 2001 10:06:10 PM)
Kathie, my daughter loves music

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 10:06:34 PM)
someone had mentioned Metronome therapy to help APD kids, and we got on the subject that Piano lessons or music lessons in general helped teache multi tasking

Kathie (ID=43) (Nov 13, 2001 10:07:37 PM)
BOthe my daughter's love music. And they really excell in it. That's why I'm late. The 14 year old had pratice till 8:00 tonight, preparing for a big concert. I have read several articles that musice was really helpful for CAPD kids.

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 10:07:57 PM)
she made him sit in the hall because he was lip syncing!!!

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 10:08:23 PM)
you just have one child Kathie, 14?

Kathie (ID=43) (Nov 13, 2001 10:08:50 PM)
Oh that's too bad. Why does he not want to sing? Does he say? No I have a 10 & a 14 -- both girls.

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 10:09:54 PM)
I have a 12yo girl, and 8yo boy with APD. He just doesn't like to sing. Someone mentioned that the words may go to fast for him, where he doesnt get the words. That may be it.

joy (ID=44) (Nov 13, 2001 10:10:54 PM)
i have a 17 year old that is in the high school band and we cant even take Kaitlyn to ball games the band music drives her crazy

debbie (ID=42) (Nov 13, 2001 10:11:35 PM)
Sarah would sing and dance all day if you let her....

Kathie (ID=43) (Nov 13, 2001 10:11:48 PM)
For anyone in this area ---I had the best conference with a group of Dr's concerning CAPD - yet. I was knidof floundering till now. That are at Auburn University of Montgomery if anyone in this area needs help. My 10 year hates loud noises but still oves her band-- go figure.

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 10:11:50 PM)
my son is very sensitive to loud noises, drums, sirens. He always covers hi ears

Dale (ID=34) (Nov 13, 2001 10:12:10 PM)
theres a therapy for problems with loud noises

Dale (ID=34) (Nov 13, 2001 10:12:28 PM)
its calles audiointergration therapy

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 10:12:33 PM)
it was worse when he was younger, not so much now

joy (ID=44) (Nov 13, 2001 10:12:36 PM)
kaitlyn is very sensitive to

Dale (ID=34) (Nov 13, 2001 10:12:37 PM)

debiann (ID=40) (Nov 13, 2001 10:12:49 PM)

debbie (ID=42) (Nov 13, 2001 10:14:51 PM)
I am goign to have to cut out too...Even though Im off work on Tues and Wed now, Im still use to getting up extremely early.

Kathie (ID=43) (Nov 13, 2001 10:15:03 PM)
Has anyone notice this maturation factor that's suppose to happen around this age 6 - 10 happening? WOW headphones for 4 hours a day - that's intense.

debbie (ID=42) (Nov 13, 2001 10:15:33 PM)
Kathie, we have noticed improvement due to maturation, although we know there is a true disorder there also

Dale (ID=34) (Nov 13, 2001 10:16:07 PM)
check the internet to find more info one AIT, some cases may use less then 4 hours

I agree. At first at I thought maybe the disorder was strickly because she was younger and would grow out of it - But not after I did my research and read more about it.

Kathie (ID=43) (Nov 13, 2001 10:17:47 PM)
Has anyone used Fast For Word? My guys are suggesting that.

Dale (ID=34) (Nov 13, 2001 10:18:26 PM)
heard of it

lisa1068 (ID=45) (Nov 13, 2001 10:19:02 PM)
I missed the whole chat and have know idea what you guys talked about but my doctor recommended Earobics. Has anyone done that?

Kathie (ID=43) (Nov 13, 2001 10:19:40 PM)
It seems pretty intense also. I think we are going to give it a try. No, Lisa I have not tried that. I'm not sure what it is.

joy (ID=44) (Nov 13, 2001 10:19:47 PM)
they do earobics with kaitlyn, our audioligist went to our ard meeting and suggested it

Kathie (ID=43) (Nov 13, 2001 10:20:00 PM)
What do they do?H

lisa1068 (ID=45) (Nov 13, 2001 10:20:12 PM)
Does she like the Earobics?

lisa1068 (ID=45) (Nov 13, 2001 10:20:28 PM)
The Earobics is something you can do at home on your computer.

joy (ID=44) (Nov 13, 2001 10:20:44 PM)
she really does , Kaitlyns biggest problem is comprehension

joy (ID=44) (Nov 13, 2001 10:20:55 PM)
and it works alot with that

lisa1068 (ID=45) (Nov 13, 2001 10:21:16 PM)
Do you use Earobics at home?

joy (ID=44) (Nov 13, 2001 10:21:55 PM)
no , we are in the process of purchasing it , she get s it 4 times a week at school

lisa1068 (ID=45) (Nov 13, 2001 10:22:08 PM)
I have read a little about Fast Forward and it seems like a good program but Earobics seems easier to do on your own.

Kathie (ID=43) (Nov 13, 2001 10:23:13 PM)
Both earobics and Fast For Word are on the computer. Do you know if they are similar? Fast For Word you have to have a provider guide you - but you can do it off site at home - just via internet.

joy (ID=44) (Nov 13, 2001 10:23:41 PM)
I have no idea

Kathie (ID=43) (Nov 13, 2001 10:24:05 PM)
Is Earobics expensive - I do not know if our school systems has any of these programs.

lisa1068 (ID=45) (Nov 13, 2001 10:24:33 PM)
When I was reading about it, it seemed you needed to have someone work with your child plus do activities at home. Fast Forward seemed more expensive than Earobics.

Kathie (ID=43) (Nov 13, 2001 10:25:15 PM)
I think tomorrow I just need to talk to the school to see if they are familiar with any of these.

lynne (ID=32) (Nov 13, 2001 10:25:35 PM)

Kathie (ID=43) (Nov 13, 2001 10:25:57 PM)
Mine are 10 & 14 - both girls.

joy (ID=44) (Nov 13, 2001 10:26:13 PM)
Earobics runs about $60.00

Dale (ID=34) (Nov 13, 2001 10:26:22 PM)
good night, it was nice talking to all of you

lisa1068 (ID=45) (Nov 13, 2001 10:26:24 PM)
My son is 6.

joy (ID=44) (Nov 13, 2001 10:27:06 PM)
our daughter with apd is 7 and we have a 17 year old

lisa1068 (ID=45) (Nov 13, 2001 10:27:09 PM)
I think Fast Forward is a couple of hundred dollars, but it is supposed to be a goog program.

lisa1068 (ID=45) (Nov 13, 2001 10:27:23 PM)
good program (not goog)

Kathie (ID=43) (Nov 13, 2001 10:28:12 PM)
There is a big differance then. Fast forward will run anywhere from $1500- $3000. depending on grant money availability. at least that's what they quoted me. and actually I did see the $3000 on one of their brochures. But if your school system had it - it should be free.

lisa1068 (ID=45) (Nov 13, 2001 10:28:48 PM)
I think if you go to the Earobics website you can have your child try a couple of the games. I haven't done this but do plan on purchasing Earobics since my doctor recommended it.

Kathie (ID=43) (Nov 13, 2001 10:29:31 PM)
I think I'll try that. I'm meeting with the Dr's next Monday to let her try out Fast For Word.

lisa1068 (ID=45) (Nov 13, 2001 10:29:44 PM)
I didn't realize Fast forward was so expensive. I know some Speech Therapist also use the Fast Forward program.

Kathie (ID=43) (Nov 13, 2001 10:30:11 PM)
They did give me their web site also, maybe they have some demo's on it.
