Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 8:33:58 PM)
That's great that you have such help. I've been OK but upset.

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 8:34:24 PM)
I now found out my youngest has expressive language disorder after spending years learning about Krystina's receptive problems

debbie (ID=20) (Oct 16, 2001 8:34:40 PM)
oh no.....im sorry to hear that

debbie (ID=20) (Oct 16, 2001 8:34:59 PM)
penny is awesome..dont know what i'd do without her

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 8:35:04 PM)
They lay down the future very bleakly for her as she can't figure out what words to use

debbie (ID=20) (Oct 16, 2001 8:35:34 PM)
Carol..dont give up on her..the doctors told me at one time there was nothing i could do for sarah either

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 8:35:56 PM)
The school has actually been wonderful, surprise surprise

debbie (ID=20) (Oct 16, 2001 8:36:05 PM)
that's great!

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 8:36:15 PM)
I'll still follow the testing stuff that I did for Krystie

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 8:36:22 PM)
and learn, again

debbie (ID=20) (Oct 16, 2001 8:37:08 PM)
i'm to the point right now where i just dont want ot deal with the schools right now....guess im just over tired.......been down right exhausted

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 8:37:26 PM)
Have you been feeling well?

debbie (ID=20) (Oct 16, 2001 8:37:55 PM)

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 8:38:15 PM)
Wow, I was up with Krystie, she had problems breathing

debbie (ID=20) (Oct 16, 2001 8:38:19 PM)
looking forward to a few days off (Thurs and Fri)

debbie (ID=20) (Oct 16, 2001 8:38:24 PM)
is she ok?!?!?!

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 8:38:50 PM)
Yeah, just allergies but they tend to keep her up at night and last night was the first of the season

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 8:39:07 PM)
Usually this starts in Sept. but I don't mind it starting late

debbie (ID=20) (Oct 16, 2001 8:39:34 PM)
just so she's ok today!

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 8:39:50 PM)
Oh yes, back to school, my trooper

debbie (ID=20) (Oct 16, 2001 8:39:57 PM)
did yousee notices about family reading fundraiser?

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 8:40:27 PM)
I haven't been able to read about it yet, but I think this is something we will love to do as Krystie loves to read.

debbie (ID=20) (Oct 16, 2001 8:40:49 PM)
do you want me to mail you a packet for each of the girls..it's due to start this week...

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 8:41:15 PM)
OK, if that's what you are doing. Shannen isn't a great reader but I do read to them and krystie does read alot.

debbie (ID=20) (Oct 16, 2001 8:41:41 PM)

debbie (ID=20) (Oct 16, 2001 8:42:02 PM)

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 8:45:55 PM)

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 8:46:14 PM)
This has been very confusing

debbie (ID=20) (Oct 16, 2001 8:46:46 PM)

debbie (ID=20) (Oct 16, 2001 8:46:46 PM)

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 8:47:08 PM)
We had a meeting at school today my son needs an fm system

debbie (ID=20) (Oct 16, 2001 8:47:21 PM)
are they cooperating?

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 8:47:44 PM)

hi deb

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 8:48:12 PM)
Hi everyone!

debbie (ID=20) (Oct 16, 2001 8:48:12 PM)
how ya doing tonight?

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 8:48:44 PM)
so far however I'm not sure if they are doing what he needs. he has very poor writing and spelling and I'm not sure how the fm system will help with that

debbie (ID=20) (Oct 16, 2001 8:49:02 PM)
are they offering any other services?

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 8:49:14 PM)
Ok....can only stay for a short while...just wanted to pop in and say HI!! Have tons to do yet tonight for Travis' b-day tomorrow....I got called in to sub today, so that threw my whole day totally off! =(

debbie (ID=20) (Oct 16, 2001 8:49:41 PM)
Please please wish him a happy birthday for me!!

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 8:49:41 PM)
He seems to have "missed" the last 3 yrs of school

debbie (ID=20) (Oct 16, 2001 8:49:56 PM)
is he on an IEP/

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 8:50:08 PM)
Yes, I will Debbie! Did you get my e-mail about taking him out of spec. ed?

debbie (ID=20) (Oct 16, 2001 8:50:33 PM)
i dont rememberreading that! when did you send that?

debbie (ID=20) (Oct 16, 2001 8:50:48 PM)
unless i read it and im that out of it and dont remember

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 8:50:53 PM)
he gets resouce help for writing and I was just told he will be moved down to a lower spelling level however i'm not sure what that is yet

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 8:51:05 PM)
I sent it the other day...it was a pretty long e-mail as I recall! *L*....hmmmm....imagine that, a long e-mail from me!!

debbie (ID=20) (Oct 16, 2001 8:51:36 PM)
deb i will go back and re read in the am

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 8:51:42 PM)
we have a ppt next week

debbie (ID=20) (Oct 16, 2001 8:51:52 PM)
do you have anyone going with you?

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 8:52:02 PM)
no

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 8:52:09 PM)
No prob....my meeting was supposed to be today with both his reg. and spec. ed teachers, but, I had to sub.

debbie (ID=20) (Oct 16, 2001 8:53:33 PM)
is there anyone who can go with you for support?

debbie (ID=20) (Oct 16, 2001 8:54:05 PM)
when are they rescheduling it for deb?

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 8:54:10 PM)
In the past for my other child i had to fight for every service he received. I am hoping the school will be better this time (they seem to be anyway). The language teacher told me to get the pc game earobics. Have you heard of that?

debbie (ID=20) (Oct 16, 2001 8:54:34 PM)
i have heard of it but have not used it..i beleive deb has though

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 8:55:32 PM)
Yes....my son used it towards the end of last year...we're waiting for the computer to be hooked up in his classroom this year. He really seems to like it....although he hasn't been able to spend as much time on it as I would like.

Lisa (ID=25) (Oct 16, 2001 8:55:37 PM)

Hi Lisa

Lisa (ID=25) (Oct 16, 2001 8:55:55 PM)
hi all

debbie (ID=20) (Oct 16, 2001 8:56:06 PM)
hi LIsa how are you tonight?

Lisa (ID=25) (Oct 16, 2001 8:56:13 PM)
okay how about everyone else

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 8:56:27 PM)
A.o.k....thanks Lisa!

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 8:56:34 PM)
Did it help him much

debbie (ID=20) (Oct 16, 2001 8:56:47 PM)
doing pretty good

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 8:57:08 PM)
Do you know if the FM systems really help?

Lisa (ID=25) (Oct 16, 2001 8:57:31 PM)
My son uses it and he could not do without it!

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 8:57:59 PM)
It's hard to say, just because he hasn't spent a ton of time on it. Once the computer is hooked up this year, I know he'll spend more time doing it...his reg. ed teacher is also a spec. ed teacher, so she is very intuned to his needs.

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 8:58:34 PM)
The school says we should see an improvement in a month but they could not tell me improve how??

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 8:59:42 PM)
since he has great difficulty writing and spelling he has missed the basics so how is the fm system going to help him learn what he has missed?

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 9:00:00 PM)
It really depends on what your child is going to be using it for. I myself, need to learn more about it....sorry I'm not a whole lot more help for you Erika.Lisa....how has it worked for your child?

Lisa (ID=25) (Oct 16, 2001 9:00:25 PM)
It helps my son attend to the tea cher and refocuses his attention

Lisa (ID=25) (Oct 16, 2001 9:00:31 PM)
it is like an amplifier

debbie (ID=20) (Oct 16, 2001 9:00:39 PM)
the fm has been beneficial for my daughter also.

Lisa (ID=25) (Oct 16, 2001 9:00:47 PM)
The teacher loves it cause it helps with the other kids in the class also

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 9:00:54 PM)
Erika....it won't help him learn what he has already missed, sadly. But, it will help him to learn better now....hopefully. =)

debbie (ID=20) (Oct 16, 2001 9:01:50 PM)
I look forward to November when I dont have to be to work so early on Wednesday mornings and I can stay in the chat later

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 9:01:59 PM)
Thats what i thought deb. However how should the school go about teaching him what he has missed the last few years?

Lisa (ID=25) (Oct 16, 2001 9:02:32 PM)
Erika, what I did with my son was I had to hire a tutor. My son is in 4th how old is yours?

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 9:02:35 PM)
Ohhhhh, I didn't know your schedule was changing...to what hours? Yippie!! =)

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 9:02:56 PM)
He is 9 in the 4th grade

debbie (ID=20) (Oct 16, 2001 9:02:56 PM)
Erika the school is gong to have develop a plan to catch h im up on what he has missed.....

debbie (ID=20) (Oct 16, 2001 9:03:14 PM)
same hours deb..4:45 am to 1:45 pm..just off on Tuesday and Wednesdays instead

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 9:03:18 PM)
should i ask for that in our ppt next week?

Lisa (ID=25) (Oct 16, 2001 9:03:25 PM)
Erika is he pulled out at all

debbie (ID=20) (Oct 16, 2001 9:03:26 PM)
will be able to make all chats

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 9:03:51 PM)
Debbie...=) How is dr. j? I missed this AM's chat cause of subbing. =(

debbie (ID=20) (Oct 16, 2001 9:04:15 PM)
he seems to be doing well..we are looking at a conference schedule for next year'

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 9:04:30 PM)
Lisa yes some he goes to resource every day to work on his daily writing and spelling

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 9:04:42 PM)
Still one in Orlando? We have our Disney trip after, remember!

Lisa (ID=25) (Oct 16, 2001 9:04:43 PM)
Erika, my sondoes the same too

Lisa (ID=25) (Oct 16, 2001 9:05:13 PM)
Erika, what is his weakness, my son does terrible in reading compreh

debbie (ID=20) (Oct 16, 2001 9:05:13 PM)
erika,, i would recommend making a list of all the areas he is behind in...and try to develop a plan with the teachers to address each area....kind of a road map to catching up

debbie (ID=20) (Oct 16, 2001 9:05:25 PM)
deb we are actually looking at jax

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 9:05:28 PM)
Mine does too...although both teachers think he is ready to be in his reg. ed room all the time.

Lisa (ID=25) (Oct 16, 2001 9:05:57 PM)
When do you decide to move a child from resource to reg ed?

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 9:06:03 PM)
Ahhhhh.....very cool!!! Keep me posted Debbie!

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 9:06:09 PM)
Thanks debbie i will.

debbie (ID=20) (Oct 16, 2001 9:07:06 PM)
will do debbie......................................... lisa my girl has always been in reged

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 9:07:25 PM)
Travis is in both right now Lisa. His reg. ed teacher said if she were grading him in his lang. arts and reading, she would have given him a high B grade...we'll have to see....the 3 of us are getting together to talk about it.

Lisa (ID=25) (Oct 16, 2001 9:08:07 PM)
My son is pulled out because his compreh is delayed by 1 year. But when would it be appropriate to put him back in reg ed?

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 9:08:11 PM)
Lisa.. he has trouble sounding words out or when reading makes things up if he doesn't understand what written. When at home we see a lot of reading comp problems however the school says they don't see it

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 9:08:55 PM)
His writing is at a 1st grade level.

Lisa (ID=25) (Oct 16, 2001 9:09:13 PM)
My son is above average in spelling and reading the words in the story his only problem is handwriting and reading compreh. Anybody have any ideas how I can help reading compreh?

debbie (ID=20) (Oct 16, 2001 9:10:39 PM)
Ladies, I"ve been up since about 2 am...sarah was up sick before i had t o leave for work at 4,,,,I"M tuckered out so im going to head out.....everyone else is welcome to stay and continue to chat

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 9:10:46 PM)
Lisa...the spec. ed teacher should be able to give you an idea as to how he is progressing, where he is at, etc....but, don't push it. It really is worth being in the smaller surroundings, with more 1-1 help. Travis actually wants NO part of going to his reg. ed room full time...

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:10:57 PM)
Do any of you know if expressive language disorder can result from apd? My youngest daughter is thought to have this by the school but what you have been writing sounds alot like her.

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:11:14 PM)
Goodnight, Debbie

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 9:11:24 PM)

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:13:59 PM)
Hi Deb, how are you?

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:14:07 PM)
I was away getting my girls to bed

Peggy (ID=26) (Oct 16, 2001 9:14:15 PM)
My son is in 3rd grade now. We are doing a 1year CAPD re-eval at the end of this month.

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 9:14:38 PM)
Hey Carol....how have you been....long time no talk! I just saw a pic of you that I took at the confrence!

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:14:49 PM)
I was telling Debbie that my youngest daughter has been evaluated by the school and was found to have expressive language disorder

Peggy (ID=26) (Oct 16, 2001 9:15:00 PM)
How was the conference everyone??? I couldn't make it...

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:15:01 PM)
Oh God, a picture of ME!?! Not good

Peggy (ID=26) (Oct 16, 2001 9:15:19 PM)
My son has both expressive/receptive language disorder with CAPD.

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 9:15:26 PM)
Well, you said that after the confrence you were going to look into it....is she getting any services or help?

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:15:40 PM)
I thought the conference was so wonderful, I learned so much and had a ball meeting everyone.

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 9:15:49 PM)
what is expressive language disorder?

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 9:15:50 PM)
*LOL* Carol.....it really is a good pic of you...honest!!

Peggy (ID=26) (Oct 16, 2001 9:16:14 PM)
Expressive is a delay on who the express themselves...

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:16:20 PM)
Yes, I asked the school to test her but what they found surprised me alot. It sounds like what you have been talking about tonight. I bet it's a good picture.

Peggy (ID=26) (Oct 16, 2001 9:16:38 PM)
The way words come out in the form of language. LDonline has some good info.

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:16:53 PM)
I agree Peggy, that's the first place I went to

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 9:16:59 PM)
The one I took of the girls came out nice too....remember the one I took of them over by Kinetic kids?

Peggy (ID=26) (Oct 16, 2001 9:17:18 PM)
I ment to say on "How" they express themselves... ooppss

Lisa (ID=25) (Oct 16, 2001 9:17:27 PM)
I have to go but i will come back next week

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 9:17:32 PM)
Hi Barbara...how are you tonight?

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:17:34 PM)
So Shannen could have APD but no one knows?

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 9:17:34 PM)

Goodnight Lisa

Barbara Lewis (ID=27) (Oct 16, 2001 9:17:47 PM)
I'm fine, thanks.

Peggy (ID=26) (Oct 16, 2001 9:17:53 PM)
Good nite!

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 9:18:02 PM)
Are they going to do the APD testing on her Carol?

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:18:31 PM)
No Deb, that's just it, she shows no symptoms of apd so it has never come up and I only think of it because her sister has it.

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:19:14 PM)
Krystie is a great reader and writer and horrible in math and acts like she's deaf.(in a nutshell), Shannen follows directions well but speaks a different language,

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 9:19:14 PM)
Well, keep a really good eye on things, and how she does. YOU, are her mom, and know her better than anyone else....

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 9:19:24 PM)
You know the drill Carol!

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:19:41 PM)
I have to remind myself of that often, more so than I thought I ever would

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:20:20 PM)
I have to investigate APD more, again and differently as they are presenting with opposite symptoms

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 9:20:21 PM)
I know the feeling...as we all do in here, I'm sure! It can be pretty rough a t times!

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:20:51 PM)
This time, thank God, the school is on my side, agreeing she needs to be pulled and worked with in language and reading.

Barbara Lewis (ID=27) (Oct 16, 2001 9:21:03 PM)
Hi, I just thought I would stop by and see what was going on this evening. THis is the second time I have been to the chat room.

Can't be the same now, can they? Oh no...lets make it harder on mom! No, only kidding...but, just think of all tyhe new info and old info you'll learn!

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:21:22 PM)
Are there apd kids out there that don't seem like they are deaf, no huh, what?

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:21:28 PM)
Hi gillis3

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 9:21:40 PM)
Hi gillis3....how are you?

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:21:44 PM)
wonderful Deb, more to learn

gillis3 (ID=28) (Oct 16, 2001 9:21:45 PM)
hi... I'm new!!!

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 9:21:54 PM)
Barbara...if you have any questions, ask away.

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:21:58 PM)
Welcome, then and to you Barbara

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:22:28 PM)
or at least comment away, tell us about yourself or your apders'

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 9:22:31 PM)
gillis3....do you have a child with APD?

gillis3 (ID=28) (Oct 16, 2001 9:22:57 PM)
actually, yes

gillis3 (ID=28) (Oct 16, 2001 9:23:26 PM)
you don't know how relieved I am to be here

Barbara Lewis (ID=27) (Oct 16, 2001 9:23:36 PM)
I just had my 15 yr old son tested this weekend. I don't have the report yet, but the discussion afterward revealed that the one area that stood out was a very low score in the Auditory Figure Gound test. Does anyone have experience with this?

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:23:40 PM)
I have a really good idea, I learned a lot here

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 9:23:48 PM)
It's a wonderful place to learn and share....

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 9:24:28 PM)
Barbara...no, I don't.....does anyone else have that "problem"?

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:24:34 PM)
Barbara, my 8 year old was just tested this summer and scored low on all the auditory testing but has only mild apd. I don't remember ever hearing about auditory figure ground

gillis3 (ID=28) (Oct 16, 2001 9:24:36 PM)
this sounds so dumb but I'm almost in tears right now, I have been so frustrated for so long

Barbara Lewis (ID=27) (Oct 16, 2001 9:25:26 PM)
gillis3, how old is your child, boy or girl

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:25:29 PM)
I've been there, too gillis3, more than I care to remember and over the weekend again about my youngest who I considered normal with a speech impediment that I now found has a major problem with expressive language

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 9:25:37 PM)
I know what your going through gillis3 It has taken 3yrs to get my ch;ild diag

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 9:25:47 PM)
Oh no, it's not dumb...that's EXACTLY how I was a year ago the first time I came into the AM chat...Debbie Wood literally called me up, and we talked for a long time...truly saved me from who knows what.

gillis3 (ID=28) (Oct 16, 2001 9:25:50 PM)
my son is 7 he was diagnosed a year ago

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:26:18 PM)
How old is yours Erika? It took me 3 years too, always waiting for appts. and being told she was too young

Barbara Lewis (ID=27) (Oct 16, 2001 9:26:33 PM)
What has been happening in that time? Are there any programs of remediation that he is working in?

gillis3 (ID=28) (Oct 16, 2001 9:26:36 PM)
some days I feel like he's falling through the cracks of the school system

gillis3 (ID=28) (Oct 16, 2001 9:27:14 PM)
he was tested and I was basically sent on my way....

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 9:27:16 PM)
he is 9. we kept being told to "wait till next year and see how he does)

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:27:19 PM)
I found that it is all up to the child's teacher and how much she wants to understand and help. this is a good year.

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:27:36 PM)
Me too until this July when she was finally tested

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 9:27:48 PM)
gillis3...is he getting any type of services and so on? As you will find out in this chat, you must always be on top of things, and "in their face" if you have to be.

Peggy (ID=26) (Oct 16, 2001 9:28:07 PM)
Gillis3, how do you feel he is falling through the cracks? not getting enough help???

gillis3 (ID=28) (Oct 16, 2001 9:28:21 PM)
exactly!!!!!!!!! he isn't getting anything extra

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:28:29 PM)
Deb, I honestly think my dealing with Krystie that way has helped with Shannen, I don't think they want to see me fighting for another kid

gillis3 (ID=28) (Oct 16, 2001 9:28:44 PM)
peggy... yes

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:28:47 PM)
Is he failing, gillis3?

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 9:28:59 PM)
Sooooo right Carol.....teachers play a HUGE role in helping the child...that's who you really need to be in touch with, share any and all info about your child's SPECIFIC issues with APD.

Peggy (ID=26) (Oct 16, 2001 9:29:23 PM)
My son is 9. He has APD, Expressive/receptive language disorder and fine moter delay. He gets speech therapy 2x's /week. OT 1x and is in learning support class.

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 9:29:42 PM)
carol. If it wasn't for the reading teacher who's says "parents know their children best" we still would be waiting. She heard our concerns and made a call.

Find out all you can to put on his section 504 if you don't have the IEP and add everything to it and make sure it all gets done.

djsmommy (ID=29) (Oct 16, 2001 9:30:04 PM)
hi

gillis3 (ID=28) (Oct 16, 2001 9:30:05 PM)
yes and no, he seems so smart yet nothing gets down on paper, it feels like the teachers have been letting him slide

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:30:05 PM)
Hi djsmommy

Peggy (ID=26) (Oct 16, 2001 9:30:12 PM)
The thing that has helped the most is the learning support class. It is a smaller group of kids with more teacher attention... He feels better that he can do the work...

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 9:30:15 PM)
Hi djsmommy...how are you tonight? Glad you could join us.

djsmommy (ID=29) (Oct 16, 2001 9:30:43 PM)
hi i have never seen anyone on here when i come

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 9:31:06 PM)
Peggy....and that builds self esteem, which so many of these children are lacking....my son included. Although this year, his self esteem is booming! Yippie!

Peggy (ID=26) (Oct 16, 2001 9:31:06 PM)
Gillis3, has he been tested? Do you have an IEP?

Peggy (ID=26) (Oct 16, 2001 9:31:45 PM)
Deb, The smaller class does really help with self - esteem> We have noticed a difference :) !

djsmommy (ID=29) (Oct 16, 2001 9:31:48 PM)
i have a 6yr old just diagnosed with capd

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 9:32:03 PM)

oic thanks

gillis3 (ID=28) (Oct 16, 2001 9:32:22 PM)
peggy.. he was tested after the teacher realized something wasn't right 6 days after school started sorry what is iep

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 9:32:50 PM)
IEP....Individualized Educational Plan

Peggy (ID=26) (Oct 16, 2001 9:33:07 PM)
IEP is Individual Education Plan/program. It is a leagal document outlining your son's education.

Peggy (ID=26) (Oct 16, 2001 9:33:19 PM)
It has measurable goals!!!

gillis3 (ID=28) (Oct 16, 2001 9:33:19 PM)
thanks deb ...no he has nothing like that

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:34:02 PM)
djsmommy, my daughter is 8 and just diagnosed this past July

Peggy (ID=26) (Oct 16, 2001 9:34:04 PM)
It basically is a document the teacher needs to follow with goals for your child to meet so they can progress.

djsmommy (ID=29) (Oct 16, 2001 9:34:05 PM)
i find myself very frustrated wiht the school and this i ahve taken him to a private speech patholigis t and audiologist who ahve done eo much better with him and i get more answers this way it seems

gillis3 (ID=28) (Oct 16, 2001 9:34:20 PM)
I have to pursue something more with this but I don't know where to start

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 9:34:46 PM)
does anyone know if an aide in the class would help kings with reading comp

djsmommy (ID=29) (Oct 16, 2001 9:34:52 PM)
my son is only receiving speech "intervention" in school he will not be classified at this point so i do not have this IEP

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 9:34:54 PM)
oops kids

Peggy (ID=26) (Oct 16, 2001 9:34:55 PM)
Most kids with special needs have an IEP. If you child has a language/APD disorder, they should qualify. ILonline.org has some good info on IESs.

djsmommy (ID=29) (Oct 16, 2001 9:35:23 PM)
i ahve found the private evaluation is a littel more involved and a better way to get answers

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 9:35:23 PM)
Erika....depends on how large/small the group is...or is it 1-1?

Barbara Lewis (ID=27) (Oct 16, 2001 9:36:15 PM)
gillis3, It IS very very hard to start. It is too bad that the audiologist who did the testing didn't give you help to know where to head to begin to get your son help.

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 9:36:18 PM)
he is in a class with 24 kids i was wanting 1 on 1 aide

gillis3 (ID=28) (Oct 16, 2001 9:36:34 PM)

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:38:06 PM)
Mine too Erika and with tantrums to boot

Barbara Lewis (ID=27) (Oct 16, 2001 9:38:15 PM)
Mine is 15 and the testing was done privately. I am not sure schools offer this test, which must be done by a qualified audiologist.

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:38:18 PM)
lately hers and my tantrums

djsmommy (ID=29) (Oct 16, 2001 9:38:25 PM)
my school finds some sort of processing probkem but i think now that he has had a private eval they find it to be more then teh school found im not sure what to do with that info

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 9:38:31 PM)
Yepper....same here Carol. Homework tonight was a nightmare.

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:39:03 PM)
I actually did it tonight, don't tell the teacher

djsmommy (ID=29) (Oct 16, 2001 9:39:12 PM)
if they performed this test they may be willing to give him some more help in school but im sure if i share teh results with them it will not help him right??wf knew the

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 9:39:17 PM)
I'm glad I'm not the only one who has tatrums too Carol! *L*

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 9:39:18 PM)
I don't have tantrums he just crys if he doesn't get it

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:39:19 PM)

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:40:05 PM)
LOL, the tamtrums are only with homework now, though, they used to be an hourly event on both our parts

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:41:19 PM)
Did you ever hear of an APD kid that doesn't act as if he/she is deaf? No huh or what! Shannen follows direction, seems to hear everything going on, only can't talk. Does this sound strange?

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 9:41:20 PM)
djsmommy...if you share the private test results, they SHOULD take them into consideration, and make accomodations, give appropriate services, etc...but, an IEP will be needed to do this.

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 9:41:24 PM)
I hear you carol. I had that with my oldes child. I'm glad my youngest is a little diffrent

djsmommy (ID=29) (Oct 16, 2001 9:41:54 PM)
well how do i get this IEP the school had to do it right??

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 9:42:03 PM)
yes

djsmommy (ID=29) (Oct 16, 2001 9:42:18 PM)
maybe they will if trhey se it? i dont know i get so frustrated

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:43:18 PM)
Actually, I only have a 504 because she doesn't qualify when tested for the IEP. It does help alot though

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 9:43:18 PM)
My oldest son was tested privately and found to have a LD he is also adhd. however the school disallowed the testing saying he had not problem

djsmommy (ID=29) (Oct 16, 2001 9:43:29 PM)
my son tested as an 8-11 yr old in so many areas and wasa UNBELIEVASLBE in the visual test his IQ was 118 and he is according to the school "borderline" processing problem but he has troubel with multisteps and is showing definite weaknesses in teh proceesing area

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 9:44:18 PM)
djsmommy...you first should talk to his teacher, principal, etc...call a meeting if you can...present the test results, get any and all SPECIFIC APD info pertaining to your child, and go in and say...my child needs help in this area, or speech, OT, whatever the areas needing help in may be.

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:44:19 PM)
Same here djsmommy, 108 or something IQ and weakness in auditory areas but nothing to indicate huge problems so doesn't qualify

djsmommy (ID=29) (Oct 16, 2001 9:44:27 PM)
he has had a tough time with his ears since he was littel adn now had tohave tube placed last year he is much better and the school and his private speech teacher think it amy have stemmed fomr that and he will catch up and be fine

Peggy (ID=26) (Oct 16, 2001 9:44:29 PM)
Most kids with APD are strong visually. Dolfrog has a great artical on this. "I think in pictures, you teach in words" i belive it's called. A must read!.

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:44:45 PM)
I agree Peggy, that is great

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 9:45:40 PM)
I tried to find that article, but couldn't! I have wanted to read it for the longest time!

Peggy (ID=26) (Oct 16, 2001 9:46:03 PM)
I'll pass the web site... hold on...

djsmommy (ID=29) (Oct 16, 2001 9:46:07 PM)
he had ot last yhr and this yr they are giving it to him however he is doing so good he will "test out" in Feb according to them however he is getting speech (in adn out osf school) and 2 reading classes in school

djsmommy (ID=29) (Oct 16, 2001 9:46:22 PM)
he is only in1st grade

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:47:02 PM)
djsmommy, I think the biggest things the teacher is doing for her are the breaks for her in the day and she is writing everything down for her to read and redirecting her attention and repeating her instruction. Only this has helped so much and it's stuff the teacher could have done last year, but didnt'

djsmommy (ID=29) (Oct 16, 2001 9:47:50 PM)
see i was told by my private speech therapist that the teacher should repeat directions for him but im not sure how the teacher will take this suggestion from meeo

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:48:29 PM)
not from you, from a 504, a legally binding, (I think) contract that the school has to honor

djsmommy (ID=29) (Oct 16, 2001 9:48:36 PM)
im hoping when the tests are done i can have a meeting wioth hwpoever i need to and tell them what she suggests and maybe if teh school speech teacher agrees it will be done

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 9:48:41 PM)
You have to keep on top of it. I have found that the teacher say one thing to me and do another.

djsmommy (ID=29) (Oct 16, 2001 9:49:07 PM)
i am sure of that erika but if they wont classigfy him i cant get tehat contract right??

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:49:13 PM)
You need to find out who sets up the 504 in your school and take all your paperwork with you for suggestions on what could help your son. Have a list of things,

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:49:24 PM)
where are you from, djsmommy

djsmommy (ID=29) (Oct 16, 2001 9:49:28 PM)
NY

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:49:51 PM)
Yes, the 504 is available there and there is someone in each school that handles it for the school

djsmommy (ID=29) (Oct 16, 2001 9:50:04 PM)
did any of you experice alot of ear troubel with your children at young ages??

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 9:50:12 PM)
yes yes yes

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 9:50:26 PM)
2 set of tubes

djsmommy (ID=29) (Oct 16, 2001 9:50:29 PM)
thats what they think caused this

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 9:50:41 PM)
No....Travis never had an ear infection until after he turned 1, and then, never really had a major amount of them.

djsmommy (ID=29) (Oct 16, 2001 9:50:43 PM)
he is only on his first set adn adnoids removed too

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:50:44 PM)
Ask at the front office who it is, set up an app;ointment (soon) and have your list ready. Ear infections until 4 years old at least 3 per year'

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:51:24 PM)
Also on her 504 list is that she is to have a squeeze ball handy if she needs it. She used it every day last year, for such stress

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 9:51:52 PM)
oh good idea carol

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:51:53 PM)
Lollipop or sucky thing as she used to chew her clothes last year, again the stress

djsmommy (ID=29) (Oct 16, 2001 9:51:55 PM)
oh he had at leat 6 to 8 a yr and was at specialists for his ears from age 3 to 5 and finally i switched drs becasue these drs seem to be heading in reverse with him as soon as we switched they recommneded surgery adn wow waht a difference

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:52:26 PM)
Last year , the teacher fought these 2 things but couldn't once they were on the 504

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 9:52:46 PM)
Yet, my youngest, who had double ear infections at 7 weeks old, and many after that, had tubes....is a straight A student, "normal"...go figure!

djsmommy (ID=29) (Oct 16, 2001 9:52:50 PM)
well hopefully once i get teh tests done i can work with the school to see if they will consider this 50

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:53:00 PM)
Also frequent breaks and not missing recess for unfinished work was a problem for her that was soon solved with the 504

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:53:36 PM)
it's not something they are able to consider, it's something you can legally get once you have a diagnosis, they can't refuse your doctor's recommendations

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 9:53:56 PM)
I just found out yesterday my son missed recess because he couldn't copy for the board fast enough

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:54:02 PM)
They can tell you it's not necessary, like they told me, but I pushed to have all this on paper

djsmommy (ID=29) (Oct 16, 2001 9:54:22 PM)
right now any unfinished classwork he has shich is onlyn if they send him to speech and ot or reading he is getting sent home i asked her not to single him out to finish it and i would be happy to monitor it at home and she agreed and its working finej

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 9:54:27 PM)
Erika...that is just what these kids DON'T need...to have recess taken away...they NEED it!

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:54:33 PM)
It is very important these kids get their breaks as the stress is very high for them

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 9:54:56 PM)
I was furious

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 9:55:13 PM)
It will be addressed in our ppt next week

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:55:26 PM)
But you need to get a doctor to list this stuff on the recommendations then put that in the child's record at the school, that is what the 504 is based on

djsmommy (ID=29) (Oct 16, 2001 9:55:32 PM)
yes i had to rearrange hios schelude becasue they were takling him out of class soooo much and he was getting stressed by being the only one at times so i reaarangesd his schedlue with the speech teacher and he feels much better now\

djsmommy (ID=29) (Oct 16, 2001 9:55:46 PM)
okthanks carol

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:56:08 PM)
I so hope it helps you, we floundered for the first grade not knowing any of this and not having the apd diagnosis

djsmommy (ID=29) (Oct 16, 2001 9:56:40 PM)
i keep hearing mixed view about having this in his record at school

Peggy (ID=26) (Oct 16, 2001 9:56:58 PM)
Sorry, got caught up in problem at work... Here is "Pictures" artical. Enjoy.. http://home.iprimus.com.au/rfreitag/grc/a3.htm

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:57:05 PM)
I was able to set up the 504 for the second grade with an ADD diagnosis that the doctor at Children's gave but agreeing with me at the same time that it was probably apd but gave it to give me some leverage with the school

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 9:57:22 PM)
If you want any kind of help for him, then you must have it in his records. If not, forget it...he;ll get zip.

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 9:57:33 PM)
The school told me that about my older son however it works to his advantage to have it recorded

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:57:55 PM)
Yep, djsmommy, I did too. But she has this problem that she tells people about herself and without it in her record, there is nothing the school has to do for her at all.

djsmommy (ID=29) (Oct 16, 2001 9:58:20 PM)
hes getting some help adn im taking himn priavtely 2x aweek they are starting earobics now and i ma also getting the software for home i just dont know if that will be enough or will he need more at school

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:58:52 PM)
He needs the school to accomodate him as much as possible. Not therapy of any kind, just make sure he gets it.

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 9:59:09 PM)
My sons middle school told up to pull him out of services because it looks bad on his record in high school and college

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 9:59:19 PM)
Peggy.....THANK YOU!!! I can't wait to read it!!

Peggy (ID=26) (Oct 16, 2001 9:59:24 PM)
I have found "Bridges to Reading" at schwablearning.org a GREAT resouce for helping to get your child tested and an IEP set up! It has some great info!!!: )

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:59:25 PM)
stuff like, calling his name when the instruction is given, tap his shoulder to redirect him,

djsmommy (ID=29) (Oct 16, 2001 9:59:44 PM)
yes i think that would help him

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 9:59:45 PM)
allow more time for work to be completed or homework assignments to be copied

djsmommy (ID=29) (Oct 16, 2001 10:00:07 PM)
he usually finishes them in plenty of time but the repeating would be helpful

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 10:00:15 PM)
This is all stuff the school can ignore that could deeply affect him and only you can get it in the school that this stuff needs to be done

deb (ID=24) (Oct 16, 2001 10:00:54 PM)
Well all....I must get going. I have birthday presents to wrap, laundry to fold, and lunches to make! Hope to see you all next week!

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 10:00:54 PM)
The only foot you have to stand on in the school, if he tests high and doesn't qualify for an IEP,is the 504 and what your doctor recommends

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 10:01:07 PM)
Bye Deb, see you then, I hope

ERIKA (ID=23) (Oct 16, 2001 10:01:13 PM)
bye deb

Peggy (ID=26) (Oct 16, 2001 10:01:13 PM)

Peggy (ID=26) (Oct 16, 2001 10:02:32 PM)

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 10:02:59 PM)
You have to do it, with the results of testing, He was tested by the audiologist, right

djsmommy (ID=29) (Oct 16, 2001 10:02:59 PM)
he tests that he needs internvention and he is done with it after this yr they tell me

djsmommy (ID=29) (Oct 16, 2001 10:03:06 PM)
yes

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 10:03:24 PM)
Did the audiologist list recommendations for him?

djsmommy (ID=29) (Oct 16, 2001 10:03:28 PM)
i also get him private speech 1 on 1

djsmommy (ID=29) (Oct 16, 2001 10:03:33 PM)
yes carol

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 10:03:49 PM)
Tlhat's the stuff you need to bring up and make sure it gets done

djsmommy (ID=29) (Oct 16, 2001 10:03:57 PM)
she recommends jsut the repeating directions she doesnt think he needs to be in a smaller class tho

djsmommy (ID=29) (Oct 16, 2001 10:04:44 PM)
she is making recommedndations to the school when shes done including an fm monitor and this repoeartng

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 10:04:56 PM)
If that's what you want, get it on paper and have it carried out. Make sure it's being done. I did this with a buddy in her room. A little boy that lives near me answered my questions about what went on in class

djsmommy (ID=29) (Oct 16, 2001 10:05:35 PM)
thanks so much im goig to find out about this 504

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 10:05:46 PM)
Yes, djsmommy, I had that happen and it was all ignored until I sat down with the teacher that writes this 504 and then it was finally carried out, all except the FM system which Krystie doesnt' want'

djsmommy (ID=29) (Oct 16, 2001 10:05:57 PM)
ill see you guys next time thanks for the help!:)

Carol (ID=22) (Oct 16, 2001 10:06:07 PM)
