Hi Debbie!

debbie (ID=3) (Jul 24, 2001 8:03:06 PM)
How are you tonight?

LaurieC (ID=4) (Jul 24, 2001 8:03:25 PM)
Good.....not sure who all is here. I can't seem to get my screen to scroll down.

debbie (ID=3) (Jul 24, 2001 8:03:47 PM)
I think right now it is just you and me *L*

LaurieC (ID=4) (Jul 24, 2001 8:03:55 PM)
How's it going with Sarah?

debbie (ID=3) (Jul 24, 2001 8:04:23 PM)
Due process is set for two weeks from Friday

LaurieC (ID=4) (Jul 24, 2001 8:04:55 PM)
Oh....... yuk! What are they giving you a hard time on? Still that IEE issue?

LaurieC (ID=4) (Jul 24, 2001 8:05:28 PM)
Hang in there Debbie. Fight for her.

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:05:38 PM)
Hi debbie, Hi Laurie

LaurieC (ID=4) (Jul 24, 2001 8:05:43 PM)
Hi Carol.

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:05:51 PM)
How'd it go, debbie?

debbie (ID=3) (Jul 24, 2001 8:05:56 PM)
when they wrote to me and denied the eval. I wrote them back and told them they had two choices....do the eval or initiate due process

debbie (ID=3) (Jul 24, 2001 8:06:12 PM)
do they've chosed to initate due process

debbie (ID=3) (Jul 24, 2001 8:06:27 PM)
hi Lisa

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:06:27 PM)
Hi all

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:06:34 PM)
You have a date! That is good, right?

LaurieC (ID=4) (Jul 24, 2001 8:06:35 PM)
Sorry to hear this Debbie. I know its emotionally draining.

debbie (ID=3) (Jul 24, 2001 8:06:53 PM)
You knwo what Laurie,,,It's ok..I actually feel good about it

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:06:57 PM)
Are you feeling any better, debbie?

debbie (ID=3) (Jul 24, 2001 8:07:12 PM)
I know I am doing what I need to do for my daughter. I am looking forward to this...

LaurieC (ID=4) (Jul 24, 2001 8:07:16 PM)
Good for you Debbie...... you'll come out a stronger person for it!

debbie (ID=3) (Jul 24, 2001 8:07:30 PM)
Been feeling better today,,but just ate dinner and it's not setting too well

LaurieC (ID=4) (Jul 24, 2001 8:07:56 PM)
Hi Lisa.

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:07:57 PM)
Can I ask some advice?

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:07:58 PM)
That's too bad, especially after a good day.

debbie (ID=3) (Jul 24, 2001 8:07:59 PM)
To me I've already won. THis will go down as a formal complaint against the school

debbie (ID=3) (Jul 24, 2001 8:08:04 PM)
please do Lisa

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:08:08 PM)
Ask away, Lisa.

LaurieC (ID=4) (Jul 24, 2001 8:08:14 PM)
Shoot Lisa.

debbie (ID=3) (Jul 24, 2001 8:08:38 PM)
I"m not sticking around too long tonight.....I promise I"ll be back to my old self soon

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:08:50 PM)
I am looking for some ideas to get my son organized from the start at school. He is forever loosing assignments and all sorts of things Any ideas?

LaurieC (ID=4) (Jul 24, 2001 8:09:16 PM)
My son's O skills are atrocious. Has he ever used an agenda?

debbie (ID=3) (Jul 24, 2001 8:09:24 PM)
I was just reading your post on the list

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:09:42 PM)
What is an agenda? what do you mean.

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:09:43 PM)
I had that problem, too. We have a buddy system at school. A friend sees that she has the right books, assignments, etc. Now she has 3 kids who take turns helping her.

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:10:22 PM)
What about important papers and things. He is not required to have a binder or anything he just has a folder.

LaurieC (ID=4) (Jul 24, 2001 8:10:23 PM)
My son was given an agenda starting in 2nd grade. Its a spiral notebook with several lines per day to write assignments..... it has a weeks worth of info on one page.

debbie (ID=3) (Jul 24, 2001 8:10:39 PM)
Lisa, on a side note, I"m still working on what information will be available after the conference. I am also currently working on a "handbook" on APD for parents in terms parents can understand.

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:10:55 PM)
I need help, tonight, too.

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:11:04 PM)
Great idea thanks an agenda might help thanks

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:11:20 PM)
I am done

LaurieC (ID=4) (Jul 24, 2001 8:11:41 PM)
My son uses the agenda plus brings home the "take home folder". The trick is getting him to write the assignment in the agenda each day and having the teacher check to make sure its done. Some parents write this into the IEP.

debbie (ID=3) (Jul 24, 2001 8:11:45 PM)
Lisa I hope youwill stay for a bit

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:12:07 PM)
oh I will I just wanted to say I was done responding

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:12:31 PM)
We had the APD eval. last Wed. Mild APD issues is what she said. I haven't seen anything in writing but she promised we had the APD diagnosis. She added that it could be maturational and get "better". She also suggested Krystina has ADD and needs a neuro-psych. exam. Do you think it's necessary?

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:13:05 PM)
We already have an ADD diagnosis from the developmental center at Children's Hosp.

LaurieC (ID=4) (Jul 24, 2001 8:13:23 PM)
Lisa....... I also incent my child 25 cents per afternoon when he gets home from school and organizes his papers for homework time. He checks off a checklist on the refrigerator (one of those wipe off boards). I am careful not to incent doing the homework...... just organizing the homework and papers beforehand.

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:14:47 PM)
yep

LaurieC (ID=4) (Jul 24, 2001 8:14:51 PM)
maybe elves.

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:15:26 PM)
Carol if a neuropsych was recommended I would do it

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:15:40 PM)
I heard it was very intense and tiring

LaurieC (ID=4) (Jul 24, 2001 8:15:50 PM)
Carol....... personally I think the neuropsch eval was WELL worth it. It gave me tremendous information on my son's strengths and weaknessess.

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:16:06 PM)
Do you think it was stressful for him?

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:16:06 PM)
but, do you want to know how to help your daughter>? Then I would do it

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:16:30 PM)
Did Sarah have one, too?

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:17:01 PM)
no..it was never recommded

LaurieC (ID=4) (Jul 24, 2001 8:17:14 PM)
Some of it was tiring .... true..... but they took breaks. What is stressful to one child may not be to another.... they are so individual. My son tries to please hard, so he is very cooperative.

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:18:00 PM)
That soundslike Sarah..she tries to please everyone

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:18:22 PM)
I'm wondering, and I know this sounds bad, I have insurance, it's all in-house doctors recommending each other and it's something I think has already been determined. I am kind of concerned these people might be .....I just can't say it.

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:18:28 PM)
Carol, I guess that is one of my frustrations..no one has even recommended she see an SLP......

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:18:48 PM)
Yep, here too.

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:19:03 PM)
Carol, I wouldn't think that way,,Iwould be happy they are looking for answers..

LaurieC (ID=4) (Jul 24, 2001 8:19:44 PM)
Too profit motivated? I try to minimize this by choosing outside professionals myself. Are you in an HMO? Insurance is so tricky.

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:19:47 PM)
Carol, may I ask a question off base? WHat time are you arriving in Orlando on Friday?

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:19:57 PM)
OK, so you think neuro-psych hasn't been covered with the 4 other testing days. 1 at school, 1 at the developmental center

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:20:16 PM)
Yes an HMO, We fly out of Boston at 8AM

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:20:30 PM)
WAIT, we fly into Orlando on Tuesday, not Friday

LaurieC (ID=4) (Jul 24, 2001 8:20:41 PM)
I think the vast majority are not in it just to get money..... they do it to help the child and give the parents some good information in order to best advocate for them.

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:21:07 PM)
Laurie, I agree

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:21:13 PM)
My son had a neuro psych evaluation and it was very helpful to pinpoint the areas of weakness.

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:21:16 PM)
Thank you for the info, I think I will pursue it. Debbie, we're spending time at Universal, the Portofino

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:21:33 PM)
Carol, I know a few of us are going to get together on Friday

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:21:37 PM)
that's right, you told me

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:21:41 PM)
Where and when?

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:21:55 PM)
Krystie is dying to meet the kids

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:22:15 PM)
dont know yet,,will let you know..I"M goign to pick dr j up at the airport and then head to hotel..should be there about 12 or so i believe

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:22:19 PM)
Debbie I could not make the conference in Orlando in the future is there anyway to get an audio of such conferences?

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:22:41 PM)
Lisa, I am still trying on this conference, I just dont have a definite answer yet

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:22:47 PM)
My husband wants to know, Kidding but serious, can it be in Las Vegas next year?

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:23:13 PM)
He's having a fit that I actually typed that!!!LOL

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:23:24 PM)
That would be great for us who can not come

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:23:28 PM)
We want to hold more conferences in other locations, but not sure when or where yet,,have to get the first one outof the way

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:23:54 PM)
When do you guys start school?

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:23:59 PM)
I hope the conferences continue because I would like to try to make the next one

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:24:07 PM)
Lisa, I am also working on putting together like a "handbook" on APD with articles contributed from some of the top professionals in the field.

LaurieC (ID=4) (Jul 24, 2001 8:24:17 PM)
I'd give anything to be able to come..... but can't. BTW Debbie..... Dr. Eva Saffer says hi.

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:24:19 PM)
Debbie, that would be so awesome

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:24:23 PM)
we start school 2 weeks from today on Aug 7

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:24:35 PM)
WOW, early, HAH?

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:24:38 PM)
Isnt she a sweetie Laurie? Did she remember who I was?

LaurieC (ID=4) (Jul 24, 2001 8:24:55 PM)
Oh yes...... she remembered you immediately.

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:25:21 PM)
I need to email her. She was really helpful to me when I went to her clinic in SC for the conference by dr Ferre.

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:25:49 PM)
it's early to start school, but this way the entire first semester is over before christmas

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:25:50 PM)
Debbie, any information I can get my hands on would be great

LaurieC (ID=4) (Jul 24, 2001 8:26:14 PM)
We start 8/15....... Dylan will be starting 3rd. I am dreading it. Dr. Saffer was incredibly easy to work with and she spent an enormous amount of time with me explaining things.

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:26:36 PM)
Lisa I promise I'll keep you informed! I was hoping to have the handbook done by the conference, but at this point can not promise...so much has happened lately I'm behind

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:26:52 PM)
I fly home Sunday and start Monday. Butterflies starting already.

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:26:57 PM)
My son does not start until Sept 6 or 7 what ever is the Weds. We have a while to go.

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:27:02 PM)
Laurie, that is what professionals should do!!

LaurieC (ID=4) (Jul 24, 2001 8:27:33 PM)
Carol and Lisa....... have your children been dx'd APD? Debbie....... I agree!

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:27:41 PM)
Yes

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:27:46 PM)
Last Wed.

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:28:17 PM)
My son's school teachers are terrible about following through with his modifications though

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:28:20 PM)
kind of reluctantly, it seemed to me.

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:28:27 PM)
Lisa, will you remind me what area of the country you are in?

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:28:32 PM)
New JErsey

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:29:02 PM)
I am looking into moving if I can find a state that services our kind of children better in the public school system.

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:29:02 PM)
are you any where near Toms River or Kean University?

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:29:13 PM)
I am 45 mins south of Toms River

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:29:17 PM)
Lisa, here it's school to school

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:29:27 PM)
Where are YOu Carol?

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:29:32 PM)
Mass

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:29:40 PM)
There is an awesome professor at Kean University who specializes in APD

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:29:59 PM)
He writes reports in terms for parents...they are wonderful

michelle (ID=11) (Jul 24, 2001 8:30:18 PM)
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart) (IP = 65.14.212.96)

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:30:18 PM)
Debbie where can I get his reports

LaurieC (ID=4) (Jul 24, 2001 8:30:19 PM)
For the longest time I struggled with the overlapping symptoms of ADD and APD. Thats when I finally broke down and brought in the neuropsych to sort it out. I too have trouble with teachers following through on mods. I think that is a problem for everyone. You fight hard to get the IEP and services, then they are half-heartedly implemented!

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:30:34 PM)
When you got the apd diagnosis, at that meeting did you see papers? Testing anything?

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:30:55 PM)
he is on the referral program for the NCAPD. His name is Alan Gertner. He also has a website on APD. www.apdfacts.com

michelle (ID=11) (Jul 24, 2001 8:31:35 PM)
Ok I know I am late but what book are you talking about

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:31:54 PM)
hi Michelle, I didnt see you sneak in

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:32:05 PM)
We only have the section 504 so no IEP so no services. This audiologist (complained) said she has mild APD but probably ADD as well and she might outgrow the APD.

michelle (ID=11) (Jul 24, 2001 8:32:22 PM)
I finally have settled in and have my computer back up and running

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:32:24 PM)
Not happy, can you tell

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:32:30 PM)
MIchelle we are talking about a professor at Kean Univeristy in NJ who writes great reports for parents in parent terms

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:32:38 PM)
Hi Michelle, I missed your entrance too, sorry

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:32:45 PM)
Hi

LaurieC (ID=4) (Jul 24, 2001 8:32:58 PM)
Hi Michelle.

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:33:05 PM)
Carol, it could be easier to get services for ADD than APD

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:33:06 PM)
My computer has been having a nervous breakdown this week

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:33:07 PM)
Carol I did not have an iep until my son had his neuro psych

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:33:27 PM)
I mean his neuro psych eval

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:33:28 PM)
Will definitely get it, then.

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:33:33 PM)
I"m still on the 504 and fighting for the IEP

michelle (ID=11) (Jul 24, 2001 8:33:47 PM)
Hi all. Carol my daughter has ADD and APD also.

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:33:49 PM)
Debbie, why won't they give your son and IEP

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:34:08 PM)
And I spent so much time "teaching" them about APD!!!!!

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:34:18 PM)
they are telling me how remarkably well my daughter is doing and how great SArah is compensating for her APD

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:34:39 PM)
The must have the same book up here Debbie, it's what I hear, too,.

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:34:39 PM)
Doe she have any other problems you can use to get the iep

michelle (ID=11) (Jul 24, 2001 8:34:44 PM)
I am concerned because we just left a great school where everybody understood. Now I have to reeducate

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:35:03 PM)
Lisa, we have a due process hearing scheduled for Friday Aug 10

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:35:06 PM)
That stinks, Michelle, I spent a whole year doing it

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:35:09 PM)
Good luck

LaurieC (ID=4) (Jul 24, 2001 8:35:26 PM)
Debbie....... I didn't realize Sarah wasn't on an IEP. There are many more procedural safeguards with the IEP versus the 504. ADD qualifies for an IEP (IDEA) under the "other health impaired" section I thought. Does Sarah have any language or speech issues that might help you get the IEP?

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:35:57 PM)
According to me or the school? *LOL*

michelle (ID=11) (Jul 24, 2001 8:36:08 PM)
LaurieC I was getting ready to ask the same question

michelle (ID=11) (Jul 24, 2001 8:36:16 PM)
Both

LaurieC (ID=4) (Jul 24, 2001 8:36:27 PM)
According to the "data"....... the reports, etc.

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:36:32 PM)
Krystie's problem is math. No math services so no services needed. But in 4th grade we start MCAS. When she takes them next year, if she does poorly on the math part, she stays back.

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:36:36 PM)
the school still thinks I suffer from SPS (stupid parent syndrome)........she has trouble in reading and language usuage.

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:37:08 PM)
Not enough trouble for them, though?

michelle (ID=11) (Jul 24, 2001 8:37:10 PM)
Samonne has testing this year too. I am worried.

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:37:25 PM)
on a scale of 1 to 5 on the FCAT standard tests,1 being low and 5 being high..sarah scored a 1

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:37:26 PM)
Debbie, can't you get an slp to dx with a language disorder?

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:37:54 PM)
So you have great reason and should convince the judge, right?

michelle (ID=11) (Jul 24, 2001 8:37:56 PM)
Did they do any language developmental tests

LaurieC (ID=4) (Jul 24, 2001 8:38:18 PM)
Has Sarah had any psychoeducational testing by an outside professional? How about language testing by the SLP?

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:38:24 PM)
Lisa, that is the route I am probably going to have to take, but I want the school to do a thorough eval..i've paid before and dont feel like they took the reports serious...so this time they will pay\

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:38:40 PM)
Debbie how exactly does due process work ?

michelle (ID=11) (Jul 24, 2001 8:38:47 PM)
The speech pathologist that dx Samonne put down CAPD put categorized it as a language delay

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:39:05 PM)
Hi eaa

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:39:09 PM)
hi eaa

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:39:13 PM)
Hi ess

Hi eaa

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:39:29 PM)
sorry Hi eaa my typing stinks

eaa (ID=12) (Jul 24, 2001 8:39:36 PM)
Hi there

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:39:48 PM)
I did a complete psychoeducational testing 1 1/2 years ago..none of the recommendations were followed.

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:40:00 PM)
How come?

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:40:18 PM)
they were going to do some other things,,,it's such a long story

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:40:44 PM)
let's say this time i wont back down......this time we will go all the way

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:40:50 PM)
I have never been to due process when does this become necessary?

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:40:50 PM)
You have the section 504 with the recommendations on it, not followed so next is due process and the school didn't know this?

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:40:51 PM)
even if that includes court

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:41:37 PM)
we are goign to due process over the request for the independent eval....we are going under the IEP (IDEA) because they tested for addittional services

michelle (ID=11) (Jul 24, 2001 8:41:57 PM)
(This user has left DigiChat) (IP = 65.14.212.96)

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:42:05 PM)
lisa, due process is necessary when the school denies your child their rights and you can not come to an agreement

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:42:26 PM)
I guess I have been lucky so far!

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:42:27 PM)
hey Dorien

Dorien (ID=13) (Jul 24, 2001 8:42:42 PM)
Hi how is everyone doing.

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:42:46 PM)
hi

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:42:58 PM)
pretty good..but im goign to be sneaking otu in a few

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:42:59 PM)
Debbie, just wondering if your school deals with many special needs students. Ours has 3 classes of them. Varying in degrees of needs.

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:43:17 PM)
Carol I live in a huge district.......

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:43:19 PM)
They seem to have a real good handle on what they can and can't do.

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:43:29 PM)
So they should know, too

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:43:45 PM)
We have alot of problems in our district in my opinion

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:44:05 PM)
This is one of three schools with special needs, out of 7

LaurieC (ID=4) (Jul 24, 2001 8:44:18 PM)
Debbie...... is it documented in writing anywhere that your provided outside evals and they refused to implement the recommendations?

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:44:23 PM)
But is there a special needs dept. in the school.

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:44:34 PM)
yep Carol...there sure is

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:44:53 PM)
So they know, they told you this is their first due process, right?

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:44:55 PM)
they have all testing...........i document everything .

Dorien (ID=13) (Jul 24, 2001 8:45:21 PM)
Debbie can you get a 504

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:45:32 PM)
Let me ask something please. If my sons teachers do not follow through on his mods what can I do if the child study team does nothing about the teacher?

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:45:46 PM)
carol i dont know what the secretary is talking aobut...maybe their first one this week *L*....you can get the entire history on the internet of the due process hearnings

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:46:00 PM)
we are on a 504 Dorien

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:46:05 PM)
That's more what I would think, Debbie

Dorien (ID=13) (Jul 24, 2001 8:46:36 PM)
And the teachers are not following it

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:46:38 PM)
Dorien, I am asking for language and reading help and they say no because she is on a 504,,only if on IEP

LaurieC (ID=4) (Jul 24, 2001 8:47:01 PM)
You know how wrightslaw.com cousels parents to take a sheet of paper to all meetings with one column showing requested services and one column showing "denied" or "agreed"........ the school then has to offer a reason for denial. Maybe you could use something like that Debbie where the paper trail is documented well..... it will speed up due process.

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:47:04 PM)
Lisa, there is a grievance procedure you can go through

Dorien (ID=13) (Jul 24, 2001 8:47:30 PM)
If the doctor agrees that this will help they have to follow his/her suggestions

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:47:33 PM)
I've got to go do the bedtime thing. Take care all and will chat soon.

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:47:37 PM)
well due process has been sped up..think it's the last letter i sent *L*

Dorien (ID=13) (Jul 24, 2001 8:47:55 PM)
You can request a hearing

Carol (ID=8) (Jul 24, 2001 8:47:59 PM)

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:48:08 PM)
dorien, the due process hearing is on friday aug 10

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:48:13 PM)
debbie Whee would I file a grievance and with who?

LaurieC (ID=4) (Jul 24, 2001 8:48:21 PM)
What, Debbie, are they saying is needed to qualify Sarah for the IEP versus the 504? That sounds like ludicrous logic they are using to deny services!

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:48:23 PM)
made the schoo linitiate it

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:48:51 PM)
oops...i cant type..im getting really tired *L*

Dorien (ID=13) (Jul 24, 2001 8:49:04 PM)
I would have as our school does not like to pay for them

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:49:38 PM)
if on a 504, go to the principal first and put grievances in writing....then up school chain of command or OCRE

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:49:40 PM)
OCR

Dorien (ID=13) (Jul 24, 2001 8:49:41 PM)
but our school is very cheep

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:49:54 PM)
my school is way past cheap...

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:49:59 PM)
Any one in an area where the school does not fight about every little thing?

Dorien (ID=13) (Jul 24, 2001 8:50:26 PM)
I try to push them when ever I can

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:50:39 PM)
Deb who's usually in here from ocala has a wonderful school system

Dorien (ID=13) (Jul 24, 2001 8:51:14 PM)
I was but now we are getting a new principal next year and we do not like each other

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:51:15 PM)
If my son is on an IEP where do I go the pricipal tells me he can do nothing cause he has an iep?

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:51:22 PM)
Ladies, Im about to fall asleep,,I think the meds are kicking in

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:51:42 PM)
Okay sorry to keep you so long

LaurieC (ID=4) (Jul 24, 2001 8:51:49 PM)
Lisa...... actually I am in a district that hasn't been too bad to work with, but they definately try to slant everything in their favor..... I did outside testing for this reason. It is an absolute art to work with a school and still keep an amicable relationship. It is very hard.

Dorien (ID=13) (Jul 24, 2001 8:52:09 PM)
Have a good night Debbie

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:52:10 PM)
Lisa, Im the one who is sorry...I"m sure these ladies can answer your questions..this is a great group of ladies in here tonight

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:52:29 PM)
How do you do it when the school does not want to give services.

debbie (ID=10) (Jul 24, 2001 8:52:33 PM)
I"m sorry to cut out early...I promise I"ll get back on tract soon!!

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:52:42 PM)
bye debbie thanks

LaurieC (ID=4) (Jul 24, 2001 8:52:55 PM)

Lisa...... so your child has an IEP already but you want additional services? Is this right?

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:54:29 PM)
No I want the teachers to follow the mods in the IEP and I always get excuses.

LaurieC (ID=4) (Jul 24, 2001 8:55:05 PM)
If she is not following the IEP, the school is in non-compliance of a federal contract...... the IEP.

LaurieC (ID=4) (Jul 24, 2001 8:55:17 PM)
Hi Judi.

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:55:32 PM)
Then what do I do next I want to be prepared in Sept?

Dorien (ID=13) (Jul 24, 2001 8:55:33 PM)
You may try staying on them and if this does not work you can request mediation

LaurieC (ID=4) (Jul 24, 2001 8:55:36 PM)
Is the Judi L from the list?

judi (ID=14) (Jul 24, 2001 8:55:57 PM)

Hi I am Lisa Farfone from the list

LaurieC (ID=4) (Jul 24, 2001 8:56:29 PM)
Judi...... just the person we need! You are great with legal stuff. Lisa is having a problem with an IEP not being followed.

eaa (ID=12) (Jul 24, 2001 8:56:38 PM)
Hi Lisa, did you get my long email about NeuroNet

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:56:43 PM)
Yes thanks

eaa (ID=12) (Jul 24, 2001 8:57:09 PM)
DId you get any good ideas about notebooks?

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:57:10 PM)
Judi are you the expert on IEP procedure when the school does not follow the iep?

LaurieC (ID=4) (Jul 24, 2001 8:57:20 PM)
Ladies........ I hate to go...... but I have to run to a basketball game!! Talk to you soon!

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:57:24 PM)
eaa no I need some ideas

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:57:50 PM)
I need to find a way to keep my son organized.

judi (ID=14) (Jul 24, 2001 8:57:52 PM)
Me too. Chronic problem--Ian's was not being followed last year so we filed a state compliance compliant--took about 6 months--still not perfect.

Dorien (ID=13) (Jul 24, 2001 8:58:25 PM)
What state are you in eaa

eaa (ID=12) (Jul 24, 2001 8:58:49 PM)
Dorien, I'm in FLorida. Lisa, take heart, my nonAPD, gifted daughter never was organized until 8th grade.

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:58:49 PM)
It has gotten so bad Judi that I hired an advocate to help with the school and they already hate her.

hi

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:59:39 PM)
eaa where in Florida are you? I am looking for a good area that I can move to do where I will not have a constant battle with the school

steph (ID=15) (Jul 24, 2001 8:59:39 PM)
is anyone there?

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 8:59:46 PM)
hi

judi (ID=14) (Jul 24, 2001 8:59:54 PM)
Individual states may have slightly different procedures--generally, there's a form or format. All you are required to do is id the school district, nature of non-compliance and sign.

Dorien (ID=13) (Jul 24, 2001 8:59:59 PM)
Hi Stehp

steph (ID=15) (Jul 24, 2001 9:00:20 PM)
hi everyone - my computor seemed to take a while to get started

Dorien (ID=13) (Jul 24, 2001 9:00:21 PM)
Sorry Steph

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 9:00:24 PM)
great thanks Judi something I can use to persuade them to follow my son's IEP

(This user has left DigiChat) (IP = 4.21.64.74)

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 9:01:20 PM)
EAA how do you find Florida school districts to deal with?

Dorien (ID=13) (Jul 24, 2001 9:01:45 PM)
Lisa it takes a parent to push and fight for the kids education

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 9:02:12 PM)
I guess Dorien than it doesnt matter where you are and what attitude the school has

eaa (ID=12) (Jul 24, 2001 9:02:29 PM)
Well, only my younger daughter attends public school. I think overall they are better than private schools, but still not that great. Florida doesn't fund education or special needs that well. We don't have state income tax.

steph (ID=15) (Jul 24, 2001 9:03:11 PM)
so does anyone know what age we can test for processing?

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 9:03:20 PM)
Eaa well I was having trouble last year with my son's teacher following his iep mods

eaa (ID=12) (Jul 24, 2001 9:03:22 PM)
I've heard things are super fantastic in Maryland. I have a friend whose duaghter is profoundly DD. The staff-student ratio in her class is 1 teacher to 2 students.

steph (ID=15) (Jul 24, 2001 9:03:36 PM)
my sone Matt is 4.5 - 5 in October and i am keen to see if he faces the same issues as my daughter

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 9:03:40 PM)

Um, near Baltimore I think.

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 9:05:01 PM)
I just am getting tired of fighting with the school . But I figure summer time is rest time for me to get ready for the next battle

eaa (ID=12) (Jul 24, 2001 9:05:06 PM)
But Lisa, seriously, if you are thinking of moving to Florida, move near Ft. Lauderdale so your son can work with Nancy Rowe!

Dorien (ID=16) (Jul 24, 2001 9:05:14 PM)
Ithink it helps to have a school you can work with

eaa (ID=12) (Jul 24, 2001 9:05:17 PM)
Plus the weather's nice in the winter.

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 9:05:25 PM)
Who is nancy rowe

eaa (ID=12) (Jul 24, 2001 9:05:39 PM)
Nancy Rowe is the wonderful audiologist who developed NeuroNet.

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 9:05:49 PM)
I love the weather in Florida.

Dorien (ID=16) (Jul 24, 2001 9:05:55 PM)
I wish I have to deal with the schools all year

eaa (ID=12) (Jul 24, 2001 9:06:25 PM)
There's another audiologist who does NeuroNet in Orlando, Leslie Doster. She's affiliated with University of Central Florida. I hear great things about her, plus it's close to Disney.

Eaa from what I gather neuro net is Like Lindamood Bell v/v is that correct?

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 9:06:54 PM)
Please give me the website again?

eaa (ID=12) (Jul 24, 2001 9:07:09 PM)
No, if anything, it's like brain gym. BUt it integrates speech/hearing.

eaa (ID=12) (Jul 24, 2001 9:07:18 PM)

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 9:07:50 PM)
Eaa My son will be starting Brain Gym in August Has anyone tried it yet?

eaa (ID=12) (Jul 24, 2001 9:08:03 PM)
NeuroNet (NN) helps with neurological organization.

Dorien (ID=16) (Jul 24, 2001 9:08:12 PM)
Is this like the fast fws

Dorien (ID=16) (Jul 24, 2001 9:08:19 PM)
Fwd

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 9:08:20 PM)
great that is one of his big problems

eaa (ID=12) (Jul 24, 2001 9:08:23 PM)
They do brain gym at my daughter's public school in regular classrooms, but not enough

jjtnallen (ID=17) (Jul 24, 2001 9:08:54 PM)
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart) (IP = 172.173.163.130)

eaa (ID=12) (Jul 24, 2001 9:08:58 PM)
Mrs. Doster is applying for a big research grant at UCF to try NN on "normal" kids to see how much they improve.

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 9:09:15 PM)
I am going to insist they let my son do it as often as he needs. He is goign to someone privately that can help with the school

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 9:09:35 PM)
So Brain Gym and NN are the same?

eaa (ID=12) (Jul 24, 2001 9:09:58 PM)
No, NN is unique that it incorporates rhythm, timing, speech, hearing, auditory memory.

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 9:10:21 PM)
Eaa I will have to look on the website because now I am confused

eaa (ID=12) (Jul 24, 2001 9:10:25 PM)
But it is similar to brain gym in that it incorporates body organization and motor skills

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 9:10:39 PM)
So is it brain gym and metronome combined?

eaa (ID=12) (Jul 24, 2001 9:10:52 PM)
Lisa, if you want, e-mail me privately and I'll give you my phone number

jjtnallen (ID=17) (Jul 24, 2001 9:10:58 PM)
My daughter has recently been diagnosed with CAPD, however her school does not recognize CAPD. Any suggestions?

Lisa (ID=9) (Jul 24, 2001 9:11:02 PM)
I would apreciate it

eaa (ID=12) (Jul 24, 2001 9:11:24 PM)
Interactive Metronome is different, but it does use timing. Without so much speech/hearing.

Look into a 504 or getting an IEP

eaa (ID=12) (Jul 24, 2001 9:11:49 PM)
htnallen, print out stuff from the web and give it to them.

eaa (ID=12) (Jul 24, 2001 9:12:15 PM)
there are lots of good links on this site --with lots of good background info

eaa (ID=12) (Jul 24, 2001 9:12:32 PM)
Our school barely recognized it either, but I educated them.

My children are the first to be recognized with it in our school

jjtnallen (ID=17) (Jul 24, 2001 9:13:48 PM)
Thanks for the info. I guess I will have to introduce them to it, because we are not going away and neither is the CAPD. I live in Texas and can not attend the conference in Orlando...sure would be nice though!

Dorien (ID=16) (Jul 24, 2001 9:14:46 PM)
jjtnallen good luck

How many children do you have

jjtnallen (ID=17) (Jul 24, 2001 9:16:13 PM)
One - Amanda

Dorien (ID=16) (Jul 24, 2001 9:16:22 PM)
I have 4

Dorien (ID=16) (Jul 24, 2001 9:16:36 PM)
I know how hardf

jjtnallen (ID=17) (Jul 24, 2001 9:16:56 PM)
Wow! That's 3 more than I could handle.

Dorien (ID=16) (Jul 24, 2001 9:17:03 PM)
I know is is not easy

Dorien (ID=16) (Jul 24, 2001 9:17:32 PM)
I may have 4 but work with 10 or more

jjtnallen (ID=17) (Jul 24, 2001 9:18:09 PM)
How old are they, and which one has CAPD? Also, how old was he/she when you knew they CAPD?

Dorien (ID=16) (Jul 24, 2001 9:19:13 PM)
Jen is 12, Tricia is going to be 11 and she and Mike age 6 have CAPD James is going on 10

Dorien (ID=16) (Jul 24, 2001 9:20:04 PM)
I have to tell you that I do not know what I would do without all of them

jjtnallen (ID=17) (Jul 24, 2001 9:20:56 PM)
Very challenging, and rewarding. How has the school helped, and are they in public school?

Dorien (ID=16) (Jul 24, 2001 9:21:01 PM)
Tricia was about 8 and Mike I have to have re tested when he is 8

Dorien (ID=16) (Jul 24, 2001 9:21:54 PM)
They have given Tricia a 504 as they know that I will not let them put her in SP ED

As for Mike the school has agreed to make some mod in class and even try an FM unit and if it helps they will get him one

jjtnallen (ID=17) (Jul 24, 2001 9:23:22 PM)
Amanda just turned 8 as well. But, looking back on everything, I am amazed no one caught it sooner. At first we thought she was ADD, but quickly ruled that out. Then my neighbor approached me about CAPD, and there was our answer. Now for the hard part.

Dorien (ID=16) (Jul 24, 2001 9:24:22 PM)
I had to keep looking as I did not even know that CAPD

jjtnallen (ID=17) (Jul 24, 2001 9:24:41 PM)
What is 504? As you can see this is all VERY new to me! I am just taking in as much info as I can get. The more I look into all of this, I'm not real sure I don't have it either, at least trates.

Dorien (ID=16) (Jul 24, 2001 9:25:54 PM)
A 504 will make the school provide a child with aids as long as they have an RX and do not need SE

jjtnallen (ID=17) (Jul 24, 2001 9:26:55 PM)
Does your daughter use the FM radio...I just don't want Amanda to get teased or singled out. Oh, I hate run, but I have a softball game to go to- it's only 8:30 here. Thanks again for the info and I hope to chat again next time.

judi (ID=27) (Jul 24, 2001 10:05:29 PM)
I think it's a good one--I've been on and off for several years. Our son seems to do better now with advocating and socializing with peers--maturity helps, teachers who are on the ball, etc

lisa29 (ID=26) (Jul 24, 2001 10:06:01 PM)
Is there usually alot of parents on?How has he been with classs mates/ excepted?

judi (ID=27) (Jul 24, 2001 10:06:20 PM)
