hi there, pretty quiet huh?

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:05:30 PM)
Hi Pam...welocome!

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:05:38 PM)
thanks, first time here Deb

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:05:45 PM)
yes, so far, anyway.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:05:48 PM)
is this your site?

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:06:13 PM)
does it get pretty crowded in here?

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:06:26 PM)
No, it's my friend Debbie Woods...she may, or may not be able to stop in tonight. So, I am helping her out tonight.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:06:37 PM)
oic, that' s nice of you

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:07:08 PM)
Sometimes we'll have 10-15 people in here. All depends....people usually pop in throughout the night.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:07:26 PM)
oh o.k is there anything scheduled for tonight? Or just open chat?

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:07:34 PM)
Do you have a child with APD?

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:07:43 PM)
Just open chat tonight.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:07:44 PM)
yes just figured it out recently

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:07:47 PM)
oh ok thanks

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:07:56 PM)
my son is 6

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:07:58 PM)
Boy, girl, how old, what grade?

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:08:17 PM)
we've just finished the testing so nothing has been started as of yet

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:08:18 PM)
I have an almost 9 year old son, he was dx when he was almost 5.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:08:32 PM)
he's 6 and just starting kindergarten in the fall

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:08:54 PM)
Have you gotton the Dr.'s report back yet?

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:08:59 PM)
oh wow, I thought that he had adhd, I just wanted answers and it took so long to find out what was going on with him

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:09:13 PM)
yes, partly, I'm still waiting on the complete one.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:09:18 PM)
he also has a sensory issue

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:09:29 PM)
APD is VERY OFTEN MIS-diagnosed as adhad.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:09:33 PM)
and a fine motor problem also

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:09:51 PM)
exactly, I actually found this website and others like it prior to having him dx

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:10:17 PM)
Same with Travis, my son. He just started SI therapy a few months ago, although, I had suspected it for a long time, vack when I was oh so very, very naieve about all of this.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:10:50 PM)
so he has sensory issues too? I find that so interesting.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:11:00 PM)
I know, it's overwhelming actually

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:11:26 PM)
what did you notice that was different with the si things with him?

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:11:44 PM)
I'll tell you Pam, this web site truley was my life line....the people that come in here are wonderful, and Debbie, is totally awesome! Yes, his SI issues are pretty deep, but, we are working on them!

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:12:20 PM)
I hope it helps me to better understand, and also to learn from the "old timers" that have been dealing with this for a while with their children

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:12:45 PM)
I think he's got a few issues with the capd, I know he's very visual and scored horribly in the verbal part, not surprising

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:13:08 PM)
they think he's got a language problem too. I'm not even sure what it all means

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:14:04 PM)
I kept my son out of kindergarten because I was afraid he'd get lost in the shuffle, we hadn't figured out what was wrong yet

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:14:12 PM)
He doesn't like people touching him unexpectadly, has very poor upper body control, very tactile defensive, and some oral tactile issues...there is a wonderful book you should read. It's called"The Out of Sync Child" by Carol Stock-Kranowitz....I had met her while attending a seminar of hers....she is wonderful, just like her book. This is a MUST read for SI stuff!

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:14:43 PM)
I have that and it is wonderful!! What a great book

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:15:10 PM)
Travis is very much a visual learner as well, always has been. He also started K. at age 6....smart, smart move on your part.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:15:16 PM)
same with keagan if he doesn't trip all over himself daily it's amazing, the poor kiddo is covered in bruises

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:16:05 PM)
thanks, I was happy that I did it. I've been working on trying to figure out what's going on with Keagan since birth. He was a very colicky baby, never happy etc. And I thought it was allergies, and some was but things didn't improve

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:16:32 PM)
Travis isn't a "tripper" really, but is very awkward in his running, learning to ride a 2 wheeler bike took a looooong time, tying shoes still isn't quite mastered....

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:16:55 PM)
he actually is riding a 2 wheeler now, and I was amazed. Keagan seems to be very wiggly

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:17:22 PM)
like his lower half just isn't strong enough

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:17:29 PM)
is travis in spec ed at school?

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:17:34 PM)
Travis was very colicky as well. It was his nursery school teacher who is the one who thought something wasn't just quite right...that was when he was 3.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:18:09 PM)
being my first child I didn't think it was anything except colic but then I noticed the SI issues etc. Very very hands on, and very aggressive

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:18:45 PM)
he's still handds on, but I'm not really dealing with the aggression end, mostly touching, hugging and kissing, doesn't matter if it's a girl or boy

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:19:04 PM)
Yes he is. But, that just started the last nine weeks of school this past year. He goes the first 1 1/2 hrs. for his lang. arts and reading. Pam, he literally, overnight, was a different child! And I mean overnight! His reg. ed teacher and I were amazed! But, he also had an outstanding 2nd grade teacher last year too.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:19:30 PM)
that's terrific! I bet he feels so proud of himself

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:20:59 PM)
I took Keagan out of preschool last Feb because his teacher was always commenting on his hands on, hitting etc. I was always consistent with his schedule etc, but it got to the point that I just couldn't stand picking him up and having her tell me he was so horrible. That's awful for a child's self esteem. So I yanked him, recently I moved to Mass. and I love his teachers here, they are so supportive and positive, he's so happy.

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:21:02 PM)
Yes, you bet! At his awards ceremony at the end of the year, his teacher was handing out a n award, and as she is describing this child it was going to, I was thinking to myself, wow...what a lucky kid, this child should be soooo proud of themselves. And, it was my Travis! I had no clue she was talking about him! I was crying at that point!

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:21:16 PM)
oh wow!! I bet!

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:23:13 PM)
I just hope he can be the best he can be when he enters school

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:23:34 PM)
Pam, the biggest thing with me, and to help Travis, is to try and be as involved as you can with school, school functions, and his teacher. I volunteer A LOT at school, and I really think it makes a difference. I pretty much get anything I ask for. But, I am also dealing with a great school and staff. As you will find in chat, a lot of parents aren't so lucky. They have major battles with schools, teachers, etc. It's soooo sad, when all we are trying to do, is jhelp our children.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:24:00 PM)
exactly, and it lousy how you have to fight so hard

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:24:21 PM)
Absolutely, but, unfortunately, it happens ALL the time.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:24:50 PM)
I know, It'll be interesting to see what happens when he gets into kindergarten

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:25:05 PM)
Boy, I wish you lived closer so you could attend the confrence here next month in Orlando. It should be awesome!!

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:25:28 PM)
Just always, always, always be on top of things with him and school.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:25:32 PM)
I know, I didn't even know such things existed, how great

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:25:58 PM)
I will. I tend to be always asking questions and informing them what I've found out etc

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:26:27 PM)
are you in orlando?

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 8:26:50 PM)
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart) (IP = 172.142.141.127)

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:26:51 PM)
This is the first one that is geared towards parents of APD children. Usually, they are for educators or Dr.'s. But, Debbie and I have gone to quite a few together. I live in Ocala, FL, and shee lives in Jacksonvill, about 2 hrs. away. So, we meet for confrences.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:26:57 PM)
hi sherri

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:27:08 PM)
that's great!

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 8:27:09 PM)
Hi Pam & Deb

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:27:17 PM)
Hi Sherri...how are you tonight? I'm filling in for Debbie tonight.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:27:26 PM)
hello:)

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 8:27:48 PM)
I'm doing fine. Okay. How are you both?

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:27:55 PM)
doing well thanks

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:28:13 PM)
If you can Pam, try and get on the chat with Dr. J...it's every other Tuesday morning from 8:30 to 10 AM....you can ask him anything! HE is awesome!!

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:28:23 PM)
really? Great.

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:28:25 PM)
Ok thanks Sherri.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:28:51 PM)
when is his next tues that he's doing it?

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:29:04 PM)
Dr. J is wonderful....I trhink the next chat with him is Tues. July 24th....but, you can check the web site here.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:29:12 PM)
ok I'll do that

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:29:35 PM)
Sherri....do you have a child with APD?

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 8:29:42 PM)
Deb, I have been out of town for a couple weeks, do you know how things went for Debbie with the school system?

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 8:29:48 PM)
Yes I do.

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:29:57 PM)
She is going to due process. =(

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 8:30:05 PM)
I'm so sorry to hear that.

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 8:30:33 PM)
It really amazes me at the lack of support around the country.

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:30:38 PM)
I'll tell you, she has fought and fought, and it makes me soooooo angry that they are still denying Sarah services.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:30:47 PM)
that's so frustrating

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 8:30:55 PM)
I agree.

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:31:25 PM)
See Pam, like I said before, not everyone is lucky enough to have the support of their school or teachers. It is soooosad.

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 8:31:56 PM)
I haven't had that experience. I started joining these chats to understand APD better. But I have learned that the fight is really in getting it recognized.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:31:58 PM)
I'm crossing my fingers, I have no idea what I'm in for at this school. We've just moved here from Maine and I can only hope it goes well.

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 8:32:07 PM)
Where do you live Pam?

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:32:14 PM)
Absolutley Sherri.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:32:19 PM)
I'm in Mass. Sherri

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 8:32:24 PM)
I'm in NC

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:32:33 PM)
I've driven thru there:)

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:32:54 PM)
stayed in SC for a few months also

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 8:33:21 PM)
The particular school I am at is very supportive, but that is not true of many schools in the Wake County School Sys.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:33:29 PM)
deb, what does the little guy with an I over his ear mean in the red box?

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:33:45 PM)
Pam....e-mail Debbie through the "Be a Friend" program...she may be able to hook you up with a parent in your area who is going through the same thing. I have an E-mail pal through the program, and through our e-mails, her son was also dx with SI issues.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:34:07 PM)
I think it's all trial and error, you're probably going to come into some problem at some point, you think?

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:34:20 PM)
I'd love to chat with someone that may be in my area about everything, thanks Deb

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:34:54 PM)
Hmmmm.....I THINK it's if you want to have a one on one chat with someone within this chat. But, I am not 100% on it!

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:35:09 PM)
ok, lol It's new to me

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:35:22 PM)
maybe like an instant message or something

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:35:53 PM)
it didn't do anything when I clicked on it

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:36:04 PM)
Right Pam. At some point probably, you may have a teacher who isn't so "accepting" of the dx of APD, who doesn't "believe" so to speak. So far, Travis has had all wonderful teachers.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:36:13 PM)
sherri, how long has your child been diagnosed?

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:36:47 PM)
that's great. I cannot imagine who wouldn't "believe" it's ridiculous the ignorance that is there

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 8:36:58 PM)
2 years. She was dx the end of Kindergarten. She just started 3rd grade and is in a CCI class now.

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:37:01 PM)
And there is a lot of it, sadly.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:37:14 PM)
what is a cci class?

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 8:37:54 PM)
It's called Cross Curriculum Level 1. Basically it is Special Ed., but she mainstreams for specials like PE, Music, etc.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:38:04 PM)
oic that's great

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 8:38:22 PM)
Yes. We really hope she'll make some strides this year.

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 8:38:38 PM)
What does OIC stand for?

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:38:40 PM)
Does she have all of her classes, math, reading, etc in the CCI class?

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 8:38:52 PM)
Yes

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:38:57 PM)
Oh, I see.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:39:02 PM)
deb, with the sensory issues that travis has, do you deal with stuff like him picking at himself or other things? Keagan will pick at his cuts, bites etc until he bleeds, he looks horrible.

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 8:39:11 PM)
She also takes Speech Therapy.

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 8:39:59 PM)
How old are Travis and Keagan?

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:40:18 PM)
sherri Keagan is 6, just turned yest.

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:40:35 PM)
Ahhhhhh PAm.....he was constantly picking at his hands, then, it was his earser dust, he had to get every single bit off of his desk, then off of his clothes. But, after he started in his spec. ed class, boom, it stopped. I think it was his way of not dealing with the work load, the frustration of it all.

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:41:01 PM)
Travis will be 9 in Oct, going into 3rd grade this year.

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 8:41:15 PM)
So he is in the same type of class as Kara

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:41:23 PM)
Keagan has to have everything in order, before he went to bed at night he had to fix his rescue heroes

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:42:24 PM)
Right Sherri. He just gets it for lang. arts and reading. But, I am going to keep a close eye on his math at the beginning of the year. If it gets to be too much, I will request he gets it for math as well.

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:42:43 PM)
Not unusual Pam.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:43:12 PM)
the dr said that K is a a high risk for a learning disability with the language and phonics

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 8:43:28 PM)
I see. Kara's weakest subjects are math, problem solving & reading comprehension. Mostly math though.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:43:29 PM)
sorry playing with my settings

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:43:40 PM)
LOL PAm....!!

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:43:53 PM)
keagan is very literal, do either of you deal with that?

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 8:44:05 PM)
Pam, does Keagan have APD?

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 8:44:31 PM)
Yes, Kara is also.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:44:31 PM)
yes, capd, but also a sensory issue

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 8:44:43 PM)
I didn't know about sensory issues.

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:45:08 PM)
Just keep on top of all of it Pam. It can be overwelming at times, but, it is a great help for everyone. I have notebooks, done by year, that I put all of his evals in, from Dr.'s, school, IEP's, etc....it really helps when I need to look for specific info, etc.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:45:35 PM)
I got Keag into the shower, asked him to hold the soap for a second I'd be right back, I came back he was still standing there, I was like Keag why aren't you washing!! He said you told me to hold this for a sec.

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 8:46:11 PM)
Now are the sensory issues a direct result of the "overstimulation" etc. with apd or is that totally separate?

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:46:14 PM)
and he started to cry, he's so sensitive, I said Keag you're absolutely right. Mom did say that, poor kiddo

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:46:27 PM)
Travis isn't too bad with that....at least not all of the time. Some "things", he has "outgrown" it seems.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:47:00 PM)
if you use slang like "get outta here" he takes you seriosly doens't always figure out you're kidding

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:47:22 PM)
The sensory issues are totally different from the APD, but, can be a cause of/for the apd, or just another puzzle piece for us parents to deal with!

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:47:23 PM)
I think they're separate sherri

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:47:45 PM)
keag also sleeps in a bed tent, likes the security

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 8:47:47 PM)
Kara has a terrible memory. Poor that can't remember from one minute to the next what she was doing sometimes. Or she forgets the names of things, like stove, refrigerator, etc.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:48:00 PM)
hm...

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:48:13 PM)
brb getting my glass of water

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 8:48:48 PM)
There are so many puzzle pieces to keep up with.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:49:04 PM)
back

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:49:13 PM)
I just filled out a 15 page questionarre today, I am taking Travis for a psych eval this Thursday, and those are some of the questions....do they forget names of things, etc. But, they asked almost anything and everything in this questionare!

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:49:19 PM)
deb is chat every night or just tues?

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:49:26 PM)
You'd better believe it Sherri!

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:49:38 PM)
Just Tuesday nights Pam.

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 8:49:49 PM)
Do both of your children have a lot of trouble with memory?

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:49:51 PM)
when K was dx he went thru an all day eval with a team of specialist. Speech, psych, neuro etc.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:50:11 PM)
no, keag remembers everything, but doesn't always follow thru with task.

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 8:50:15 PM)
Wow, that's alot for a kid to go thru in 1 day.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:50:21 PM)
k thanks deb

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:50:40 PM)
sherri, they broke it up and they did lots of fun things, he was o.k.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:51:02 PM)
they find tuned it the last few times we went and he saw a neuro psychologist to dx him with the capd

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:51:16 PM)
No, not really. He actually has a pretty darn good memory. He can take you from one part of town, where he may have only been once, and take you to a specific place, on the complete other side of town, with no problems. But, have him re,member to put his toys waway...forget it!

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:51:37 PM)
deb Keagan too!! It's amazing the things he remembers

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 8:51:39 PM)
Kara forgets the names of things all the time.

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 8:51:56 PM)
She does remember directions though.

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:52:05 PM)
Amazing, isn't it?!

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 8:52:16 PM)
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart) (IP = 172.154.123.226)

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:52:18 PM)
ugh that is one area he tested well on, lol

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:52:28 PM)
hi lindals

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:52:34 PM)
Hi Lindals, how are you tonight?

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 8:53:03 PM)
Hi, Deb I just emailed you saying I couldn't get access...obvioulsly ignore that.

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 8:53:09 PM)
Yes. It really amazed me that last year Kara could be given three words and repeat them in order. But if you added one more word, she would forget the order and at least one of the words (not necessarily the 1st or last).

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 8:53:09 PM)
Glad I found you all.

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 8:53:15 PM)
Hi Lindals.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:53:45 PM)
sherri, Keag can have a problem with that also, but he is visual he remembers stuff like places people etc

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:53:46 PM)
Do you have a child with APD Lindals? If so, you are at the right place!

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:54:18 PM)
deb is apd and capd the same?

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:54:28 PM)
This chat is a big help to a lot of parents. I always look soooooooo forward to Tuesday nights, because of chat!

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 8:54:38 PM)
My problem is that my 9 year old son was misdiagnosd with ADHD by an educational psychologist and then got a dx of CAPD by an audiologist. I have an IEP hearing next Friday.

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:54:48 PM)
Yes. They technically have dropped the "C" off.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:55:02 PM)
lindals, they thought my son was adhd also

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:55:12 PM)
oic thanks deb

debbie (ID=9) (Jul 10, 2001 8:55:26 PM)
hi ladies

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 8:55:31 PM)
I'm afraid the school will get hung up on the ADHD dx and ignore the CAPD.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:55:45 PM)
is he on meds for it Lin?

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:55:47 PM)
Pam, this is Debbie....I was telling you about her.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:55:54 PM)
hello debbie:)

debbie (ID=9) (Jul 10, 2001 8:55:55 PM)
I just popped in to say hi

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 8:56:05 PM)
Besides he does not need Ritalin. He recently was dx with depression and anxiety. Now he's on meds and doing absolutely wonderful!

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:56:10 PM)
How are things Debbie?

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:56:15 PM)

debbie (ID=9) (Jul 10, 2001 8:56:42 PM)
I didn't go to VBS tonight,,,I"M getting ready to take some more meds and go to bed

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:56:44 PM)
LOL!!!!

debbie (ID=9) (Jul 10, 2001 8:56:48 PM)
lol

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 8:56:54 PM)
Gee....alrady talking about me Debbie?

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:57:03 PM)
Wait til you read the archives Debbie!

debbie (ID=9) (Jul 10, 2001 8:57:07 PM)
is this the LInda that emailed me?

debbie (ID=9) (Jul 10, 2001 8:57:15 PM)

Imhappy you got in!

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 8:58:07 PM)
Thanks.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:58:15 PM)
deb, is travis a busy boy also? Keag can get overstimulated easily

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:58:32 PM)
He's not as bad as when he was younger.

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 8:58:45 PM)
Like I said in one of my emails if my son has a mild case of CAPD, I'd hate to see what kinds of problems he'd have if it were worse!

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:58:48 PM)
yes, I'm noticing it's changing as he gets older, also

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 8:58:55 PM)
Me too!

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 8:59:24 PM)
His memory is better...sort of. But his ability to block out surrounding noise seems to have worsened.

debbie (ID=9) (Jul 10, 2001 8:59:30 PM)
deb..i'll email you and let you know whats up..have dr appts tomorrow and thursday again

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:59:32 PM)
Travis has "outgrown" some things, but then, there seems to something else that pops up to take its place. Not always though.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 8:59:41 PM)
I'm worried about the fact that he doesn't know his abc's as far as recognition, he gets stressed out and doesn't even want to try to learn.

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 8:59:43 PM)
That's good to know Deb.

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 8:59:59 PM)
Debbie...yes, please do. I've been thinking about you all day.

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:00:02 PM)
I thought the tests were somehow inaccurate. Or that he'd learned to take the test.

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:00:41 PM)
Debbie....I go to Gainesville THIS Thursday for Travis' physch eval!!! I just finished filling out the 15 page questionare!

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:01:04 PM)
deb, I've had that done for Keagan

debbie (ID=9) (Jul 10, 2001 9:01:07 PM)
we'll definitely have to talk friday..i'll have all my test results by then too...

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:01:15 PM)

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:01:22 PM)

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:01:33 PM)
hi all

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:01:44 PM)
Mind me asking what the psych eval is for?

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:01:47 PM)
This is my first time so bare with me

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:01:58 PM)
mine too...first time that is, Lisa.

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:01:59 PM)
Yes, for sure we will talk on Friday. Actually, I will be at my parents spending the night. Mom and I are going to a Creative Memories thing from 7-11 PM...

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:02:09 PM)
Hi Lisa...welcome!

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:02:12 PM)
lisa mine too, it's harmless:)

debbie (ID=9) (Jul 10, 2001 9:02:13 PM)
it's a great group in here Lisa!

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:02:35 PM)
lindals, my son was dx by a neuro psych dr

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:02:53 PM)
do you have a child with apd?

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:02:57 PM)
Oh...does it matter who does the dx?

debbie (ID=9) (Jul 10, 2001 9:02:57 PM)
Deb thanks for covering the chat for me tonight. I Just wanted to pop in and say hi..I"m off to take some medicine and go to bed!!

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 9:03:10 PM)
goodnight debbie

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:03:10 PM)
bye debbie, nice to meet you

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:03:17 PM)
Can I ask if everyone has had trouble dealing with the school as far as capd is concerned?

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:03:24 PM)
OK Debbie...if we don't talk on Friday, Saturday for sure. OK?

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:03:25 PM)
Yes!!!!

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:03:47 PM)
lindals, I don't know, just that he went thru a team of specialist and this was her thing

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:03:49 PM)
They tried to get me to believe "it" didn't exist.

debbie (ID=9) (Jul 10, 2001 9:03:50 PM)
OK....Deb can fill you in my trouble with the school....doc told me to avoid stress for a bit *LOL*

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:03:57 PM)
They actually unhooked my son's field system from feb to June and I had no idea.

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:04:01 PM)
Lisa.....I am one of the lucky ones.

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:04:22 PM)
Debbie....oh, that should be real easy to do! L,L,L!

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:04:31 PM)
What things are they supposed to do for capd kids.

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:04:31 PM)
Field system? I'm so new I just don't know what that is.

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 9:04:45 PM)
brb

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:04:47 PM)
Good question!

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:04:49 PM)
A field system is adevice teacher has a mic

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:04:51 PM)
Lisa....I have a great school. My boys go to a Charter School, and they are wonderful.

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:05:03 PM)
then the speakers are in the corners of the room

debbie (ID=9) (Jul 10, 2001 9:05:05 PM)
night night! *waving goodbye*

debbie (ID=9) (Jul 10, 2001 9:05:07 PM)
(This user has left DigiChat) (IP = 172.139.185.62)

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:05:14 PM)
bye debbie

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:05:24 PM)
bye debbie

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:05:27 PM)
Oh, gee! That must have had a major impact on your child's work at school.

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:05:38 PM)
Yes they said he was not attending

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:05:43 PM)
I wonder why?

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:05:49 PM)
There are also the personal FM systems...where the child has a headphone, and the teacher wears a mic...Travis had one last year.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:05:50 PM)
I was told that they wouldn't use anything like that until my son was at least 8

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:05:51 PM)
Also they said he was working slow

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:05:52 PM)
I am thinking my son would benefit from an FM trainer in his ear. He has recurrent hearing loss due to allergies.

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:06:21 PM)
I do not like those because the child cannot hear the discussions with a head set

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:06:22 PM)
lisa, why would they just unplug him like that?

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:06:32 PM)
They claimed it was not helping.

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:06:43 PM)
Lindals....I would most definatley check into one then. Sounds like he would be a perfect candidate for one!

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:06:48 PM)
hm...yet you said his performance went down?

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:06:58 PM)
But I was not notified and I insisted they use it next year and told them I am going to check the room

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:07:11 PM)
What I found facinating when I read his audiologist's report today was that even though his hearing is technically fine in his left ear, he did poorly on all the SCAN testing in that ear.

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:07:15 PM)
Good for you Lisa!

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:07:46 PM)
what exactly is the SCAN testing?

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:08:10 PM)
Has anyone tried Auditory Integration Therapy?

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:08:17 PM)
Travis basically has a hearing loss in his left ear. The left ear USUALLY, tends to be the ear that is the "problem" ear.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:08:22 PM)
no haven't tried anything yet

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:08:25 PM)
we have a family hx of hearing loss in the left ear. I have an aide for my left ear. So is he already showing a predisposition to permanent hearing loss in that ear.

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:08:44 PM)
No Lisa. I've not read a whole lot about it to really know much about it.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:09:05 PM)
what about stuff like ear aerobics?

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:09:09 PM)
The SCAN Testing was a group of tests they used to evaluate his abilities. I'd have to grab the report to tell you exactly what they tested.

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:09:17 PM)
It is supposed to help with kids with autism but it also helps kids with apd

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:09:19 PM)
lindals, oic yes, I have that

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:09:28 PM)
Fastfoward is better then earobics

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:09:40 PM)
My son is on the second part of Fastfoward

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:09:53 PM)
I've heard from an OT that Earobics works wonderful. Oh, really Fastforward? See that's why these chats are great!

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:09:54 PM)
I've heard of that

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:10:13 PM)
Travis started that last year in school. I was supposed to get it to bring home over the summer, but school had to send all of the CD roms somewhere. =(

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:10:28 PM)
deb the fast forward?

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:10:30 PM)
Fastfoward is expensive but it has studies that indicate the progress is amazing

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:10:40 PM)
Is one really better than the other or is it based more on their particular strengths and weaknesses? And maybe age?

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:10:54 PM)
Fastfoward is more intenses

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:11:03 PM)
But, there is a difference between FFW and Earobics. One works on certain things, and the other works on different things.

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:11:13 PM)
Ahh...

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:11:15 PM)
They actually work on the same things

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:11:18 PM)
Yes, FFW is more intense from what I understand.

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:11:25 PM)
One is more complicated then the other

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:11:37 PM)
I researched it before my son started last year

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 9:11:39 PM)
Is it possible to do Fast Forward at home, without an audiologist reading results?

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:11:53 PM)
a slp can monitor it without being there

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:12:03 PM)
My son's problems were said to be in the Corpus Collosum and he has that integration difficulty. Not only that but he does have Sensory Integration Dsyfunction to boot!

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 9:12:04 PM)
My school doesn't offer it right now.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:12:24 PM)
lindals my son has SI issues also

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:12:28 PM)
Travis has SI issues too Lindals.

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:12:36 PM)
If you have the fastfoward in the iep the school has to provide

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:12:44 PM)
Seems like a commond problem then.

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:12:46 PM)
you can get an audiologist to reccommend

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:13:01 PM)
Oh...good to know . Thanks Lisa.

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 9:13:16 PM)
I'll go that route then. But I've been told budget woes are th problem. They are fighting over whose budget has to foot the bill.

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:13:21 PM)
My son is 9 and I have been dealing and fighting with the school when i have to

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:13:32 PM)
sometimes the SI problems are so "normal" t o me, i forget he has some, lol

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:13:48 PM)
The law says if your son needs it by a specialist money is not the issue as far as the law is concerned

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:13:49 PM)
Me too Pam! *L*

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:14:02 PM)
Right Lisa.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:14:21 PM)
deb, unitl my girlfriend says..."did you see that" and I'm like what??

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 9:14:25 PM)
So I can "demand" it if I can get an audiologist to recommend?

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:14:28 PM)
My son is 9 too. I only wish they had dx his Sensory stuff when he was younger. My daughter has it too, but already has had OT. Wow what a difference it has been for her.

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:14:28 PM)
I think when you know the law and how to approach the school it is a little different

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:14:36 PM)
he's very repetitious

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:14:56 PM)
Sherri....yes, you should be able to get it. Period.

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:15:09 PM)
My son was apreemie so even though he had no dx they gave him services since 2

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 9:15:14 PM)
Okay. That is really good to know.

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:15:57 PM)
I have noticed when they know you know your rights they come around a little easier.

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:16:10 PM)
The key is knowing what you can demand.

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:16:10 PM)
The school must hate me because before I had kids I was a Paralegal and I am forever doing research on what they have to do for him. If I hadn't fought the entire year, we wouldn't have gotten his dx at all.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:16:14 PM)
lisa, yes like they know you've got them cornered, lol

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:16:29 PM)
that's right

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:16:44 PM)
whatever works, they need the services

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:16:46 PM)
I havebeen fighting the school since k and my son is going into fourth

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:17:15 PM)
When I come in the school they say here she comes. But i donot mind as long as my son gets what he needs.

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:17:40 PM)
I want Craig to get transferred to a newer school that has quieter classrooms, carpet and teachers who are familiar with FM trainers. This particular school has a program for the hearing impaired as well. I figure they're better matched to meet my son's needs.

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:17:53 PM)
Whenever I run into a snag I mention my disability attorney's name who is well known

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:18:12 PM)
Actually the studies show the more included kids are the better they learn

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:18:21 PM)
It's certainly worth a try Lindals. It sounds as though it would be a much better match for him.

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:18:21 PM)
the school should be made to learn about it

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:18:44 PM)
Is everyone's kids in reg ed?

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:18:57 PM)
lisa, mine is just entering kindergarten

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:18:59 PM)
Oh, I know that. I'm just wanting him to be in an atmosphere where the students will not tease him and where the teachers will be more likely to follow his IEP.

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 9:19:05 PM)
Kara is in a special ed class called CC1

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:19:16 PM)
Travis has special ed for his language arts and reading, then reg. ed for everything else.

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:19:33 PM)
My son has reg ed for everthing except reading.

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:19:58 PM)
He doesn't qualify for the hearing impaired program, nor do I want him to be in one. I just want him to get the student notetaker he needs, the quieter classroom, and a teacher who manages their class!

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:20:23 PM)
you can ask for an aide in the reg ed you know.

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:20:37 PM)
Craig can not spell worth a hoot! He is about a year behind in that area. Yet, his vocabulary is about 2 years ahead. Ugh...

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:21:02 PM)
My son is 1 year ahead in spelling and comprehension is his problem

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:21:12 PM)
I'm going to run, got to get some lunches ready before I zonk.

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:21:39 PM)
Oh, the many ways APD works...Travis is great with spelling, but, his demand writing, or story writing is sooooo hard for him.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:21:42 PM)
it's been great talking to all of you, and I hope to be back next tues. If I can remember:)

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 9:21:45 PM)
bye pam

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:21:50 PM)
It's going to be interesting to see how the school can manage his delays along with his need for more challenging work. It's been recommended that he be considered for Gifted Services in addition to his IEP.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:21:58 PM)
I ahve one more question!!

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:22:07 PM)
Night Pam...it was great having you tonught! Stop back next Tuesday!

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:22:13 PM)
Craig has a hard time with writing .....oh boy!

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:22:26 PM)
do any of you notice your children telling amazing stories? Like embellishing big time?

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:22:34 PM)
thanks deb, are you on aol?

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:22:37 PM)
Let him tell you the story orally and it's A+ all the way.

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:22:56 PM)
Yes Pam...here's my e-mail....Schottsbydeb@aol.com

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:23:01 PM)
Embellish how? You mean fib about their abilities?

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 9:23:05 PM)
Kara doesn't but my older daughter did. She's not APD though.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:23:23 PM)
I was told that the reason he does this is he loses his train of thought and that he remembers a few things, so he'll go off on a tangent and jsut make up a story

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:23:36 PM)
no doesnt really fib, just quite the imagination

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:23:52 PM)
Oh, that! Yes.....And he does have an amazing imagination!

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 9:24:00 PM)
Kara does that. It took us a year to get here to stay on one subject in a conversation.

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:24:03 PM)
Travis doesn't really embellish, but, he does tend to go off on tangents all the time....like he has lost his train of thought.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:24:10 PM)
my friends are always amazed the things he comes up with

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:24:12 PM)
He could put me to sleep telling me stories. I think he wants a job on a soap opera!

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:24:30 PM)
Lindals....LOL!

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:24:38 PM)
lindals, lol I think mine with be a politician and he's mr freindly, talk to anyone

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:24:54 PM)
I have to go do some chores I will see you all next Tues.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:24:54 PM)
debb thanks for the e-mail address I'm on aol also

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:25:00 PM)
night lisa

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:25:01 PM)
Except the stories would be more in line with Star Wars or war in general.

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:25:01 PM)
Same with Travis...he loves to debate with you!

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 9:25:05 PM)
night Lisa

Lisa (ID=10) (Jul 10, 2001 9:25:09 PM)
(This user has left DigiChat) (IP = 172.129.71.102)

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:25:41 PM)
I know girls get this too, but is it more common in boys?

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:25:43 PM)
deb isn't that funny. Keagan will walk over to anyone, the other day we were at Sam's Club and someone was eating and he practically sat right down!

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:25:57 PM)
It tends to be more common in biys.

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:26:15 PM)
Ooops, I meant boys!

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:26:31 PM)
Okay...back to to the ADHD misdiagnosis. Any ideas how to handle that at the IEP meeting?

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:26:49 PM)
tell them they were wrong and you've finally got the right dx

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:26:56 PM)
k I'm leaving this time:)

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:26:59 PM)
night everyone

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:27:02 PM)
And they'll believe me?!

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:27:12 PM)
do you have a dr's letter etc?

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:27:28 PM)
I can see it now...they'll say Ritalin, Ritalin...that will solve his attention problem!

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:27:40 PM)
no one can make you medicate him

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:27:44 PM)
I have to get a letter from his psychiatrist I suppose.

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:27:55 PM)
Yep, Travis too Pam! We're at the park playing, and he's the first one over there introucing himself and playing. BUT, not in school. I think in school, it's the whole thing of trying to the same as the other kids. On the playground, he's Travis, a kid playing. It;'s the whole expectation thing in school.

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 9:27:57 PM)
Stand strong and refuse the ritalin.

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:28:02 PM)
I know they can't, but they can be a real pain in the side!

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:28:06 PM)
Night Pam...see you next week!

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:28:09 PM)
without the back up from your MD it's hard to say what they'll say

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:28:39 PM)
He hasn't even seen a pediatrician or anyone like that since we moved here a year ago.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:28:50 PM)
night, I know Lindal, it sounds easy I know, but with that letter they'll have to see it in black and white

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:29:01 PM)
when did you get the recent dx?

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:29:04 PM)
He's only been seen by an ENT for tubes and tonsills; and this team who did the educational workup.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:29:17 PM)
deb, lol sounds like Keagan, although he's mr friendly in school too

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:29:29 PM)
Thanks Pam. I got the dx a week ago.

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 9:29:55 PM)
Can you get a letter from the educational team stating they disagree with the diagnosis?

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:29:56 PM)
well maybe if you get it written up, take it to them etc, they'll listen?? Hopefully???

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 9:30:05 PM)
The ADHD diagnosis that is.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:30:08 PM)
ttyl all, night

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:30:18 PM)
good luck Lindals

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:30:22 PM)
The educational psych. even said she didn't know anything about CAPD, but was sure he had ADHD no matter what! I nearly fell off my chair.

pam (ID=6) (Jul 10, 2001 9:30:47 PM)
(This user has left DigiChat) (IP = 172.132.181.202)

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:31:23 PM)
He tends to "step back" in school. He doesn't have a lot of friends really. Not saying he has none, but, he doesn't go out of his way either. He has gotten better though. I'm trying to have sleep overs for him and his brother, so Travis can have some 1-1 playtime, and hopefully, make a few good friends. As a mom, it makes me soo sad, that he doesn't have many friends. His younger brother is the complete opposite!

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:31:24 PM)
One member of the team said ADHD, one said CAPD...then the ENT said CAPD; and so did the pychiatrist and therapist....

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 9:32:50 PM)
I really wish you luck with that Lindals. Hopefully they will see it as it is.

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:33:02 PM)
Yah!! Ugh....

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 9:33:20 PM)
Deb, thanks for the info. about fast forward tonight. I have to go. Talk to you both next week.

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:33:40 PM)
Night Sherri...see you next week!

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:33:40 PM)
I wonder if I should try to talk to the psycholgist and try to what...reason with her?

Sherri (ID=7) (Jul 10, 2001 9:33:47 PM)
(This user has left DigiChat) (IP = 172.142.141.127)

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:33:47 PM)
night Sherri.

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:33:58 PM)
Gee Deb....Sorry if I'm keeping you.

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:34:05 PM)
And now there are two!

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:34:18 PM)
This is my first time and I'm a nervous wreck that they'll deny him any services.

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:35:12 PM)
Is it still archiving?

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:35:23 PM)
From what you have said, they shouldn't. Just get any and all info you can, concerning his issues, and be ready.

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:35:36 PM)
Yes, all chats are archived.

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:35:39 PM)
Ready for what exactly?

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:37:00 PM)
Oh, here's a good thing I suppose. Orignally when I started this whole thing the school pychologist (not the one who did the testing) asked me if I knew what a corpus collosum was. He was trying to say that he recognized my son's symptoms, but could not exactly say that and wanted me to have him tested for that.

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:37:22 PM)
Be ready to give them the info concerning your child, and WHY services are needed. Make sure you have any and all reports with you. You should see what I take to my IEP meetings and Dr.'s appts!! I go with anything a person could ask for!

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:37:46 PM)
And the intersting thing is that the school psych. wears two hearing aides!

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:38:13 PM)
Really?! Sounds as though he was looking out for you. That's good.

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:38:25 PM)
Hmm...file box of last years school work. Their recommendation for him to go to summer school maybe?

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:39:07 PM)
I even kept the copy of his final progress report from last year that said he was getting D's and his behavior was poor.

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:39:49 PM)
Honestly Lindals....I have samples of his school work for each year, report cards, updates from his speech therapist, his OT, Dr.'s evals, etc. I have it done by year, and in chronilogical order. Really helps.

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:39:55 PM)
I do have an advocate too. She's a retired special ed teacher. My luck, she's on vacation this week.

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:40:25 PM)
When is the meeting?

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:41:13 PM)
I have most of that. Even the stuff from his IFSP when he was 20 months old and severely hearing impaired and speech delayed. I have every audiolgogy report ever taken! I'm serious about this. I hate watching his self esteem go down any further.

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:41:20 PM)
Next Friday.

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:42:34 PM)
His grades went from A's to D's in one school year. He got A's and B's in private school. In Public school they have to teach a certain way in order for the curriculum to be covered for a state test.

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:42:42 PM)
Sounds as though you are very organized! Good for you! That's how I am too! I can totally relate to the self esteem thing. It's so sad to see that with your child. Will she be back in time for the meeting? If so, will you have a chance to talk to her before hand?

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:42:45 PM)
Yep, Virginia teaches for a single test.

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:43:12 PM)
Sounds like Florida...they have he FCAT testing here.

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:43:23 PM)
I believe she'll be back in time for the meeting, but I want to be sure to talk to her beforehand.

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:43:56 PM)
Where in FL. are you? My girlfriend just moved to SC from FL. She was in the Tampa area.

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:44:35 PM)
Now that I know what his problems are I can see why he had such great difficulties with the VA teaching and testing.

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:44:48 PM)
You really sound like you are well prepared for thje meeting. Just go over the important info, so you look and sound like a professional! And, you are. You are a professional parent who knows what your child needs. Your job, is to let them know what it is your child needs.

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:45:07 PM)
He does best in spelling when he can memorize the words. He can not proof read and that is what is required in VA.

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:45:40 PM)
Ooh, you're good Deb! Want to go to the meeting with me!

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:46:27 PM)
He can not write and listen at the same time either. So notetaking is not going to be easy for him.

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:47:01 PM)
It makes me so angry....every child, every child, has a differnt way of learning. But, heaven forbid when you throw in a child who has a real different way/need to learn. But, it's the schools job to make sure every child gets a FAPE....Free and Appropriate Education. I think I may have left out a word there.

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:47:45 PM)
Don't worry about the lost word. I totally get it and agree 100% with you!

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:48:06 PM)
Ahhh, same with Trav....he can not listen and take nots....he really hasn't gotten to that note taking stage yet, but when he does, you bet I will have it in place in his IEP that he has a note taker for him.

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:48:59 PM)
I would if I could Lindals! But, you will do great! I'll give you my e-mail. I would love to hear how it goes. It's ....Schottsbydeb@aol.com

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:49:01 PM)
My only regret is that we can not afford a private education this year. But the next year we will and every year after that. Because it's not that I have trouble accepting D's; it 's that I will not accept my child getting D's causing him to be clinically depressed.

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:49:39 PM)
Absolutely, nor should you accept that.

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:50:22 PM)
I've been trying to get Debbie and her family to move down by us....our school is so awesome, and I know that Sarah would get what she needs there.

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:50:49 PM)
But, know she won't move, although I would love to have her closer!

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:51:11 PM)
This is one thing that truly infuriates me. I tell Craig he did not get stupid in our move from CA to VA. It's that the school and it's way of teaching is not a good fit for him.

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:51:41 PM)
She lives in FL too, but not near you?

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:52:11 PM)
Right. And he needs to understand that, as hard as it may be to get him to know that it's NOT him, it's THEM!

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:53:06 PM)
Yep, she lives in JAcksonville, about 1 1/2 - 2 hours away. We go to confrences together. I love it when we can get together. She really is an incredible woman!

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:53:35 PM)
We moved to VA because we thought Craig could get a public school education and do better than he did in private school. He struggled there too, but was able to get good grades and he loved learning. Now we're stuck here at least for 2 more years. My dh is an Naval Officer. So we have the ability to move on back to San Diego in 2 years.

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:54:54 PM)
Oh, I bet that's neat! My friend who moved to SC has a son with cleft lip. My daughter was adopted and she was born with cleft palate. We have learned so much from one another and supported one another. Her son also has sensory issues and I recognized that in him and helped her to get him OT.

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:55:23 PM)
It's so good to have someone who can support you through things like challenging kids!

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:56:37 PM)
The reason I said she was adopted is because it was ironic to say the least that I would end up with a child who had the same disability as my best friend's child!

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:56:53 PM)
Unfortunately, you're stuck then for a few years. Try and get to know his teacher, because if you have the teacher "on your side", it really makes for a much easier school year. His teacher and I had a little notebook that went back and forth every day. That way, we both knew what was going on, how his day was, what his problems were that day, etc. It was a huge help to both of us. You may want to see if the teacher would be willing to give it a try.

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:58:23 PM)
Things happen for a reason Lindals, I'm a firm believer in that. Support from friends, family, and hopefully this chat, are sooooooo incredibly helpful.

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:58:23 PM)
As a matter of fact I want to put that in Craig's IEP. I want daily contact with his teacher. None of this once a week they send home the school work. Then I'd find out after the tests that he didn't "get it".

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 9:59:04 PM)
Right! That daily contact REALLY helps.....it helps you, him AND the teacher!

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 9:59:19 PM)
I'm so glad I found this chatroom and Debbie on the yahoo board. I forget what the name of tha board is, but it's the one for kids who have mild versions of CAPD, ADHD and Autism I think.

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 10:01:49 PM)
I am yawning up a storm...time to go to bed. Thanks for hosting this chat Deb and thanks for the helpful advice!

deb (ID=5) (Jul 10, 2001 10:01:53 PM)
Debbie truley saved me about a year ago. Right after my very first chat, I sat at my computer crying, and she happened to send me an instant message. I told her I was sitting there balling my eyes out, and she gave me her phone number, and I called her right then. We talked for a long time. She made me feel so much better. As I said, things happen for a reason. She and I have become very good friends by "meeting" right here in the chat.

Lindals (ID=8) (Jul 10, 2001 10:02:44 PM)
