How are you two tonight?
Carol (ID=6) (Jun 26, 2001 8:03:07 PM)
Doing OK after a great day with the kids at a water park.
Gilly (ID=7) (Jun 26, 2001 8:03:13 PM)
I'm doing pretty good. I like summer - no homework!
Carol (ID=6) (Jun 26, 2001 8:03:34 PM)
Brought our nieces and nephew and swear the 17 year old nephew also has APD
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:03:41 PM)
My kids are at their Aunt's house for the week.....it's so quiet here!
Carol (ID=6) (Jun 26, 2001 8:03:57 PM)
That must be fun for all of you!
Gilly (ID=7) (Jun 26, 2001 8:04:12 PM)
It must be nice to have some time to yourself.
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:04:46 PM)
I've been trying to get caught up on some work...I talk to the kids a few times per day on here or the phone..i have to admit, i miss them alot
Carol (ID=6) (Jun 26, 2001 8:05:10 PM)
I never had the experience but think I'd miss them, too.
Gilly (ID=7) (Jun 26, 2001 8:05:24 PM)
I'm sure you do - but some times it is good for every one to have a break.
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:05:38 PM)
When they come back they will be here two weeks and then they are to go to NY for two weeks
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:05:52 PM)
It is good to have a break...we ALL needed that
Carol (ID=6) (Jun 26, 2001 8:05:57 PM)
Wow, NY without you?
Gilly (ID=7) (Jun 26, 2001 8:06:02 PM)
What part of Ny are you going to?
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:06:23 PM)

Gilly (ID=7) (Jun 26, 2001 8:07:23 PM)
My son spent 4 weeks in the city this past year (2 weeks - 2 times). He went for auditory integration therapy at Beth Israel Hospital. He loves NY!
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:07:42 PM)

Gilly (ID=7) (Jun 26, 2001 8:08:11 PM)
Another Floridian!
Gilly (ID=7) (Jun 26, 2001 8:08:40 PM)
I'm not sure - I want to. Depends if I can get coverage for my kids (i have 3).
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:08:41 PM)

Gilly (ID=7) (Jun 26, 2001 8:08:57 PM)
Maybe its something in the water here!!!
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:09:07 PM)

Carol (ID=6) (Jun 26, 2001 8:11:38 PM)

Gilly (ID=7) (Jun 26, 2001 8:11:39 PM)
Good - how are you?
Dorien (ID=8) (Jun 26, 2001 8:11:49 PM)

Carol (ID=6) (Jun 26, 2001 8:11:50 PM)
OK, Dorien, and you?
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:12:01 PM)
this is my friend who came to visit from australia last year and when she was here we got to talking about apd..she went back and had her son tested and he has APD...that was the missing link they were looking for.....
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:12:24 PM)
now she's working in Australia to help bring about a public awareness of APD, like what we are doing here
Carol (ID=6) (Jun 26, 2001 8:12:58 PM)
I mentioned that I think my nephew at 17 has it. Never been tested, of course, but an adult with this actually scares me after today!
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:13:06 PM)
How has your week been dorien?
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:13:26 PM)
what happened today Carol?
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:13:45 PM)
Gilly, if I was to send you extra flyers on the conference, would you help pass them out in your area?
Dorien (ID=8) (Jun 26, 2001 8:13:50 PM)
Not bad just getting someone to watch the kids for the summer
Gilly (ID=7) (Jun 26, 2001 8:14:00 PM)
IDefinitly!!!!!
Carol (ID=6) (Jun 26, 2001 8:14:04 PM)
My husband probably has it but it looks like he copes where as my nephew seems to be on another planet and he drives a car to work and school. It scares me. He got lost twice in the park after wandering away, like a little kid.
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:14:13 PM)
I swear if i could quit my full time job, I would in a heartbeat!
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:14:29 PM)
oh my gosh Carol
Dorien (ID=8) (Jun 26, 2001 8:14:33 PM)
I m sorry I have to go as my pager just went off
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:14:43 PM)
ok Dorien..keep in touch
Dorien (ID=8) (Jun 26, 2001 8:14:46 PM)
(This user has left DigiChat) (IP = 216.179.4.227)
Carol (ID=6) (Jun 26, 2001 8:14:53 PM)
Call him and it takes a while for him to answer, he says what all the time... like our kids except bigger!
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:14:54 PM)
Gilly if you email me tonight, I will send some in the mail tomorrow
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:15:09 PM)
does that surrpise you Carol?
Gilly (ID=7) (Jun 26, 2001 8:15:27 PM)
Ok I will. If you need me to anything else I will. I think I have time I can do anything to help out.
Carol (ID=6) (Jun 26, 2001 8:15:58 PM)
I havent' been around him all day like today but I think I was hoping coping would help and I don't see him coping so not sure if some do and some don't or if different levels of APD are at work
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:16:21 PM)
Gilly that is wonderful! I"ll let you know....I've been contacted by some people in the Miami area (I believe) who are interested in starting a support group down there..if you are interested,,,mention it in the email.
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:17:14 PM)
Carol, Im sure different levels of APD are at work.....but you have to rmember kids with APD grow up to be adults with apd..and if they dont get help when young..it still affects them when grown up
Carol (ID=6) (Jun 26, 2001 8:17:36 PM)
do you think, with help, they get "better" at coping anyway?
Gilly (ID=7) (Jun 26, 2001 8:17:43 PM)
I will . I probably know them. We probably all use thesame tutors etc...... I would love to be in a support group.
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:18:16 PM)
I think with help it becomes more managable. because they can learn to recognize when it's hard for them to understand.
Carol (ID=6) (Jun 26, 2001 8:18:44 PM)
Maybe even just knowing there is a "diagnosis" would help in some way!
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:18:57 PM)
Gilly that sounds great! Now that the website is back up and running again I can start getting messages out about support groups and get a page up for them
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:19:12 PM)
Knowing what the problem is , is the first step in getting help
Carol (ID=6) (Jun 26, 2001 8:19:49 PM)
I can't even bring it up to them, my in-laws think I'm chasing shadows and looking for a problem where there isn't one.
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:20:12 PM)
Carol, trust your own insticts..she is your child!
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:20:19 PM)
Did youget your confirmation in the mail?
Carol (ID=6) (Jun 26, 2001 8:20:24 PM)
Oh, mine is under my complete control
Carol (ID=6) (Jun 26, 2001 8:20:35 PM)
Yes, I did, thanks
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:21:01 PM)
great...
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:21:06 PM)

Gilly (ID=7) (Jun 26, 2001 8:21:35 PM)

Carol (ID=6) (Jun 26, 2001 8:25:13 PM)

So far just my oldest, although my youngest is having a real hard time learning to read which the first one didn't so I'm not sure about her now.
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:34:07 PM)
Scoobi, the tuesday night chat is open agenda...
Carol (ID=9) (Jun 26, 2001 8:34:28 PM)
My husband is dyslexic and we think also has APD so my little one might just be dyslexic or maybe just not as quick as the first one.
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:34:51 PM)
I've not heard back from my school yet since I sent the letter in repsonse to their denial of the independent evaluation
Carol (ID=9) (Jun 26, 2001 8:35:05 PM)
How long do they have to respond to you?
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:35:27 PM)
in the letter i said 7 days..but i think they have 10
Carol (ID=9) (Jun 26, 2001 8:35:40 PM)

debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:35:51 PM)

Hi
scoobi (ID=10) (Jun 26, 2001 8:36:29 PM)

Carol (ID=9) (Jun 26, 2001 8:36:32 PM)

debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:37:08 PM)
According to our procedural safeguards (in our district) they must grant or initiate due process....not deny by letter
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:37:19 PM)
we are happy to have you! where are you from?
Steph (ID=12) (Jun 26, 2001 8:37:24 PM)

Carol (ID=9) (Jun 26, 2001 8:37:28 PM)
Wow, scoobi, I'm still in the process of getting her diagnosed. We have the appt. in July, in Massachusetts we have to wait months
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:37:44 PM)

debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:38:51 PM)
http://www.angelfire.com/home/capddownunder/
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:39:21 PM)
my daughter has been given the scan-c, the willeford, and the ssw
scoobi (ID=10) (Jun 26, 2001 8:40:19 PM)
I am really fortunate in that matter I'm in new jersey , I requested an evaluaton from my school district and after days of testing and nurlogic test hearing test etc the conclusion was processing difficulties
Steph (ID=12) (Jun 26, 2001 8:40:39 PM)
we did the scan test - she was in the 5% for auditory figure groundadn 25% for the others
Carol (ID=9) (Jun 26, 2001 8:41:09 PM)
We did all those tests, too, scoobi, but still pressing for the APD diagnosis
Steph (ID=12) (Jun 26, 2001 8:41:28 PM)
we also did a test called Time Order Test and she scored 154 eyes and 190 ears
Steph (ID=12) (Jun 26, 2001 8:41:58 PM)
im trying to work out how bad she is in the scheme of this disorder
Steph (ID=12) (Jun 26, 2001 8:42:15 PM)
i am having alot of problems getting the school to recognise it
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:42:15 PM)
what did the aud who did the testing say?
scoobi (ID=10) (Jun 26, 2001 8:42:43 PM)
Are you all gettting the testing from privae doctors or social sevice or school districts?
Steph (ID=12) (Jun 26, 2001 8:42:51 PM)
she was actually diagnosed by a developmental ped it was only when she was older that we got the testing
Carol (ID=9) (Jun 26, 2001 8:43:02 PM)
Private now after the school did all they could
Steph (ID=12) (Jun 26, 2001 8:43:20 PM)
we have to do it privatly but the school is going to do some
Carol (ID=9) (Jun 26, 2001 8:43:34 PM)
Our developmental pediatrician missed the diagnosis, ADD was her diagnosis
Steph (ID=12) (Jun 26, 2001 8:44:16 PM)
we were lucky as there is only one guy in Sydney that knows about DSI at all and we went to him first
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:44:27 PM)
i am asking the school for acomplete educational evaluation to try and determine what is going on with my daughter
Steph (ID=12) (Jun 26, 2001 8:44:32 PM)
so what did your kids get on the scan test ?
Steph (ID=12) (Jun 26, 2001 8:45:15 PM)
as i said im trying to work out if she is as bad as I think or if in fact she is only mild and that is why the school is being so unhelpful
scoobi (ID=10) (Jun 26, 2001 8:45:34 PM)
Off the main subject a bit, do you find it difficult to deal with all the un-wanted advice on how to "fix" the problems from people who have no idea what they are talking about... How do you handle it

Debbie, I havn't been on this site in quite awhile. Do you feel the diagnosis of APD is incomplete for your daughter?

oops
Steph (ID=13) (Jun 26, 2001 8:47:00 PM)
hit the wrong key :)
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:47:05 PM)
Sue, I feel as if my daughter does have APD, but I believe its causing other problems that are not being addressed
scoobi (ID=10) (Jun 26, 2001 8:47:23 PM)
welcome back Steph
Carol (ID=9) (Jun 26, 2001 8:47:25 PM)
I go crazy Scoobi with people who don't know about APD and aren't willing to learn about it which happened to me this year.
sue (ID=11) (Jun 26, 2001 8:47:26 PM)
oh
Steph (ID=13) (Jun 26, 2001 8:47:31 PM)
can anyone remember there test results?
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:47:57 PM)
my daughter is really strugglng in school more than she ever has and I want help for her. the school says she's doing fine despite all the tests she fails
sue (ID=11) (Jun 26, 2001 8:48:09 PM)
sorry steph, but no. I've got all that stuff filed away
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:48:21 PM)
i've got it filed too.....
Steph (ID=13) (Jun 26, 2001 8:48:41 PM)
ok just so frustrated
sue (ID=11) (Jun 26, 2001 8:48:43 PM)
Debbie, how are her grades?
Carol (ID=9) (Jun 26, 2001 8:48:45 PM)
I think Krystie has mild APD because she copes well and can only pray that is what we will find in July. Like Debbie, Krystie is failing in school. Math is her problem and the school tells me not to worry about it
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:48:53 PM)
and steph you have to realize that scores for one child may be ok while same scores for another child may indicate a problem....depending on age
Steph (ID=13) (Jun 26, 2001 8:49:09 PM)
these were scaled for age
scoobi (ID=10) (Jun 26, 2001 8:49:15 PM)
I finally got it through one of my relitives thick skulls that it isn't a matter of reading to the child everyday, it is bringing everything down to its simplest terms and give enough time for an answer
Carol (ID=9) (Jun 26, 2001 8:49:30 PM)
So debbie, if the scores are OK, does that mean there is follow up later on to see if she really has a problem?
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:49:49 PM)
Sue that all depends..at midterm she was at an F in two classes...she failed i think all tests in those two classes after the midterms and ended up with a B and a C and I dont understan dhow
Carol (ID=9) (Jun 26, 2001 8:49:54 PM)
scoobi, I've given up on the in-laws
Steph (ID=13) (Jun 26, 2001 8:50:17 PM)
is Dr J comming tonight
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:50:28 PM)
Steph, thats what I meant..to compare nubmers kids will have to be same age and same tests
sue (ID=11) (Jun 26, 2001 8:50:31 PM)
oh, it's a real concern when grades are all over the place, isn't it?
scoobi (ID=10) (Jun 26, 2001 8:50:43 PM)
Carol, I feel your pain I know exactly how you feel
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:50:45 PM)

Hi Jaz Welcome
Steph (ID=13) (Jun 26, 2001 8:51:08 PM)
i was under the impression this was a regular chat time for him
Carol (ID=9) (Jun 26, 2001 8:51:19 PM)
Can you tell, debbie, I'm actually scared she might not be diagnosed with APD. Her scores on the WISC weren't that bad in auditory, only worse than the above average in everything else.
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:51:22 PM)
Sue I do not understand if the shcool is helping as much as they say and we all know she's so bright..why is she failing unless there is another problem not being addressed
Carol (ID=9) (Jun 26, 2001 8:51:25 PM)
Hi Jaz
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 8:52:02 PM)
Hi, how are you all? I haven't chatted in a while.
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:52:03 PM)
Dr J usually is in the am chat, but we are having to rearrange some chat times with his summer schedule.....the night chat is usually open forum
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:52:06 PM)
hi Jaz
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:52:37 PM)
As soon as I talk to Dr J, I will update chat times onthe NCAPD site
Steph (ID=13) (Jun 26, 2001 8:53:03 PM)
thanks
scoobi (ID=10) (Jun 26, 2001 8:53:05 PM)
I'm don't know if anyone has addressed this before but is anyone using sign language to try and cue a response , I have found this very helpful with my son
Carol (ID=9) (Jun 26, 2001 8:53:22 PM)
I use it too scoobi, it helps an awful lot,
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:53:36 PM)
we considered doing some sign language over the summer, but we just couldnt get it in the schedule
Carol (ID=9) (Jun 26, 2001 8:53:37 PM)
She loves it and is better at it than I ever expected
Steph (ID=13) (Jun 26, 2001 8:53:39 PM)
have any of you done any of the computor programs like fast forward?
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:54:04 PM)
yes Steph, we've done FFW about 1 1/2 years ago
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 8:54:11 PM)
We have earobics, I was going to try it this summer.
sue (ID=11) (Jun 26, 2001 8:54:21 PM)
There's so much we don't understand. I wish we could find the real answers. And professionals can't even lead us in the right direction. (ok, sometimes I get bitter!

we have done Samonas but with mixed results and took a big comitment
scoobi (ID=10) (Jun 26, 2001 8:56:17 PM)
Sue it's sometimes exhusting and its really hard to keep your patience hang in there as I'm sure you know small steps make your day
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:56:46 PM)
If you havent met Josiane yet, let me introduce her to the group.....Josiane is the first parent I ever talked to who also had a child with capd......she is to thank for the CAPD:From the Heart of a Mother website.......the night I met her is the night I started thesite
Josiane (ID=15) (Jun 26, 2001 8:57:01 PM)
We've been soooo busy! Gaelle is going in 2nd grade, she will be doing FFW again in summer school for FREE!
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 8:57:06 PM)
Yeah Josiane!
Carol (ID=9) (Jun 26, 2001 8:57:18 PM)
Nice to meet you, Josiane, so to speak!
scoobi (ID=10) (Jun 26, 2001 8:57:20 PM)
Do any of your kids have a wired classroom of headset to filter backround noise
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:57:39 PM)
Good for you!!!! Please tell her hi from me and Sarah
Carol (ID=9) (Jun 26, 2001 8:57:40 PM)
Want it but not without that diagnosis
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:58:09 PM)
we use an FM, but not sure if we will continue next year
Josiane (ID=15) (Jun 26, 2001 8:58:42 PM)
How are Sarah and Kendra?
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 8:58:52 PM)
My son is going into third. He was just officially diagnosed last month. I'm an SLP so I knew but I figured it would help him to have an official diagnosis. He's had an FM system in his class the past two years with speakers and they also had headsets for use when the room got noisy. They were for everybody, we just are lucky they were available. Great school!
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:59:01 PM)
they are in orlando right now....but doing good overall....
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 8:59:26 PM)
that is great Jaz,,,
Josiane (ID=15) (Jun 26, 2001 8:59:26 PM)
(This user has left DigiChat) (IP = 172.167.71.110)
Carol (ID=9) (Jun 26, 2001 8:59:31 PM)
You were very lucky, Jaz. I won't get anything from the school if I don't get the APD diagnosis
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:00:41 PM)
I guess it helped that I'm an SLP but the Home and School Association bought the systems and I just requested that he be placed in the rooms that had them. For third grade there aren't any but if he needs it, I'm gonna get it!!!!!
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:01:21 PM)
His teacher this year said she would have never suspected he had a problem.
Carol (ID=9) (Jun 26, 2001 9:01:31 PM)
I've heard that Jaz
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:02:53 PM)
Are any of you using supplements or herbals?
debbie (ID=5) (Jun 26, 2001 9:02:54 PM)
be right back
Carol (ID=9) (Jun 26, 2001 9:03:10 PM)
no, Jaz, what's out there
Steph (ID=13) (Jun 26, 2001 9:03:19 PM)

Steph (ID=13) (Jun 26, 2001 9:03:49 PM)

Carol you might want to look into your states disabilities laws It might provide you with some resource
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:04:08 PM)
I'm in a group for Apraxic kids too. Many people have had success with fish oil for their apraxic kids. I give it to my son to help with his appetite.
Carol (ID=9) (Jun 26, 2001 9:04:17 PM)
I have, so far nothing, they say mostly there isn't a problem
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:04:50 PM)
I was told that too Carol. "he's doing fine...." but I knew better.
Carol (ID=9) (Jun 26, 2001 9:05:15 PM)
me too but that's why I can't wait for the appt. in July to be over, I'm scared the audiololgist will say it too
scoobi (ID=10) (Jun 26, 2001 9:05:48 PM)
Jaz are apd and apraxic similar ? Pardon my ingnorance but I don't know what that is
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:06:17 PM)
How old is your child? What are you seeing?
Carol (ID=9) (Jun 26, 2001 9:06:39 PM)
She's 7 and we are finally seeing an audiologist to test specifically for APD
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:06:56 PM)
Scoobi, they're different. I joined that chat because some of my students have apraxia. It's a motor planning disorder and they have a terrible time learning to speak.

Hi Josiane (again) and roxie
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:07:25 PM)
Carol, I heard kids have to be 6 or 7 to be tested.
Josiane (ID=16) (Jun 26, 2001 9:07:40 PM)
Sorry aol cut me off
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:07:43 PM)
It took about 1 1/2 hours to test my son. He enjoyed it though.
Carol (ID=9) (Jun 26, 2001 9:07:48 PM)
That's what I had heard before entering this chat, now finding they test younger
Carol (ID=9) (Jun 26, 2001 9:08:00 PM)
we call that chat gremlins, Josiane,
scoobi (ID=10) (Jun 26, 2001 9:08:03 PM)
Carol , even though I had an early intervention i knew that there was a problem
Carol (ID=9) (Jun 26, 2001 9:08:21 PM)
Me too, scoobi, the early intervention teacher agreed with me, too
scoobi (ID=10) (Jun 26, 2001 9:08:24 PM)
Jaz my son was tested at three
roxie (ID=17) (Jun 26, 2001 9:08:30 PM)
I use to work for an audiologist and although he did not test for APD, he informed me that a child could be tested at 4 or 5.
Carol (ID=9) (Jun 26, 2001 9:08:49 PM)
Jaz, they told me to expect to be there a total of 90 min.
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:08:53 PM)
In preK my sons teacher commented that he didn't respond to his name. I laughed it off, I wish I had pursued it then.
Carol (ID=9) (Jun 26, 2001 9:09:23 PM)
I heard that, Jaz and that she couldn't follow directions and needed time to answer simple questions
roxie (ID=17) (Jun 26, 2001 9:09:38 PM)
I wish we had been more agressive, we waited until our son was 9 and feel he may never catch up.
scoobi (ID=10) (Jun 26, 2001 9:09:48 PM)
Jaz DON'T beat yourself up the experts have a hard time knowing what is wrong
Carol (ID=9) (Jun 26, 2001 9:09:48 PM)
Like you, didn't pursue it until first grade
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:09:48 PM)
I had to really be stubborn in the pediatricians office to get a referral for the ENT. He got tubes and the audiologist there said he might wind up with CAPD
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:10:33 PM)
The audiologist also said that kids do compensate. Our kids may have better visual strategies.
Josiane (ID=16) (Jun 26, 2001 9:10:41 PM)
My daughter is waitting for a date to be tested, they couldn't find an audiologist to test her, she will be the 1st to have this test with our insurance.
roxie (ID=17) (Jun 26, 2001 9:11:02 PM)
Odd thing, my 17 year old had 5 sets of tubes, so many ear infections we lost count and has encounted no problems. My 110 year old had one set of tubes and maybe three of four ear infections and he is the one with APD!
Carol (ID=9) (Jun 26, 2001 9:11:35 PM)
Krystie had about 5 or 6 but I was told that didn't have an effect on her APD issues
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:11:49 PM)
Sometimes the fluid sits and sits and doesn't get infected but it does cloud hearing. My youngest was like that, I've been much more aggressive with him.
Carol (ID=9) (Jun 26, 2001 9:12:25 PM)
We had a full audiological exam last month which tested all aspects of hearing without findings
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:12:38 PM)
My opinion is that they are related. How could they not?

Hi
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:12:55 PM)
Hi Carol B
Carol (ID=9) (Jun 26, 2001 9:12:58 PM)
Did you try Carol and it didn't work?
CarolB (ID=18) (Jun 26, 2001 9:13:04 PM)
Yes
Carol (ID=9) (Jun 26, 2001 9:13:07 PM)
sorry
scoobi (ID=10) (Jun 26, 2001 9:13:12 PM)
What upsets me the most is that there is no cause that anyone can give you , My son was never sick .
CarolB (ID=18) (Jun 26, 2001 9:13:21 PM)
It's a great name, what can I say?
Carol (ID=9) (Jun 26, 2001 9:13:27 PM)
I agree!!!!
roxie (ID=17) (Jun 26, 2001 9:13:43 PM)
We feel certain that our son's is inheritated from his father. His Dad had a terrible time with understanding oral instruction. Howver, he made it through 6 years of college to become a clinical pharmacist. He had to listen in class and copy someone else's notes at night to get through it all.
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:13:46 PM)
I know scoobi, it would help to know how it happened.
Carol (ID=9) (Jun 26, 2001 9:14:11 PM)
Same here roxie although mine didn't do well at all in school until much later in life
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:14:54 PM)
I see myself in my son. I did great in school. I took notes to help me focus on the instructors voice. It help me tune out distractions. Kids learn to compensate.
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:15:16 PM)
They can also be taught strategies.
Carol (ID=9) (Jun 26, 2001 9:15:23 PM)
That's my hope!
CarolB (ID=18) (Jun 26, 2001 9:15:43 PM)
I agree, they will learn to compensate some themselves, but they need to be taught strategies.
scoobi (ID=10) (Jun 26, 2001 9:15:48 PM)
How are your children socially? Mine seems so isolated ., he is such a caring little boy but no one is able to understand him unless they take time and listen
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:16:01 PM)
How old is he?
scoobi (ID=10) (Jun 26, 2001 9:16:08 PM)
Six
Carol (ID=9) (Jun 26, 2001 9:16:08 PM)
Mine does OK but she needs the time to listen to them
roxie (ID=17) (Jun 26, 2001 9:16:09 PM)
Has anyone had issues with reading comprehension. That seems to be the biggy for our son now and Fast Forward (to my understanding or misunderstanding) does not thoroughly address comprehension like the VISUALIZING AND VERBALIZING does?
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:16:25 PM)
My son does great in structured settings. he gets a little lost in noisy team sports.
CarolB (ID=18) (Jun 26, 2001 9:16:44 PM)
I have 4 kids, 2 with CAPD and they both have reading comprehension problems.
roxie (ID=17) (Jun 26, 2001 9:16:52 PM)
tRY GOLF. wE HAVE FOUND THAT IS OUR SON'S NITCHE!

cCAROL B, WHAT ARE YOU DOING RE. THE READING COMP. ISSUES?
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:17:34 PM)
my son is into gymnastics
CarolB (ID=18) (Jun 26, 2001 9:18:21 PM)
One just finished 6th grade and he started going to resource room in 2nd grade when he just wasn't learning to read.
scoobi (ID=10) (Jun 26, 2001 9:18:24 PM)
He loves to be around other kids but as soon as it gets noisy he bails
CarolB (ID=18) (Jun 26, 2001 9:18:42 PM)
They used a different reading program with him and he is a gread reader now.
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:18:51 PM)
Sometimes reading below the reading level helps comprehension because they don't have to work so hard on the decoding they can focus more on what they're reading.
CarolB (ID=18) (Jun 26, 2001 9:19:10 PM)
My other son is 9, almost 10 and he also has replacement reading.
CarolB (ID=18) (Jun 26, 2001 9:19:27 PM)
Decoding was a problem for my older one, not for my younger one.
roxie (ID=17) (Jun 26, 2001 9:19:37 PM)
OUR SON CAN READ OK. HE CAN DECODE WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS. TO READ A PARAGRAPH OR EVEN SOME SENTENCES, FORGET IT!
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:20:12 PM)
My nephew has a moderate hearing loss and he decodes great but has trouble with comprehension.
roxie (ID=17) (Jun 26, 2001 9:20:15 PM)
HE JUST DOES NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT THE WORDS SAY.
roxie (ID=17) (Jun 26, 2001 9:20:31 PM)
WHAT DID THEY DO FOR YOUR NEPHEW?
CarolB (ID=18) (Jun 26, 2001 9:20:33 PM)
Sometimes that comes with time.
roxie (ID=17) (Jun 26, 2001 9:20:42 PM)
UGH!!!!
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:20:43 PM)
How is his comprehension of spoken language?
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:21:08 PM)
He goes to resource center and speech, I don't know what kind of reading program he has though.
roxie (ID=17) (Jun 26, 2001 9:21:18 PM)
OK, CANNOT FOLLOW COMPLEX ORAL INSTRUCTIONS THOUGH. ONE THING AT A TIME.
CarolB (ID=18) (Jun 26, 2001 9:21:40 PM)
That's very common. That's where the strategies come into play.
roxie (ID=17) (Jun 26, 2001 9:22:04 PM)
ANY SUGGESTIONS???
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:22:08 PM)
Roxie, does he get help with reading at school? what does the learning consultant say/'
CarolB (ID=18) (Jun 26, 2001 9:23:14 PM)
Right now they are teaching my 9 year old to say to someone "I don't understand" when he can't follow what someone is saying. Sometimes if you rephrase what you are saying or break it down into smaller sentences they comprehend.
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:24:03 PM)
One of my students once told me I was talking to fast. I was so proud of him that he could let me know what he needed. It was also a wake up call for me. Slow down.
roxie (ID=17) (Jun 26, 2001 9:24:05 PM)
HE ATTENDS A LUTHERAN SCHOOL WITH ZERO RESOURCES. THEY USE ALL THE CLASSROOM MODS. THAT THEY CAN, BUT OTHER THAN THAT, NOTHING. THE GROUP THAT PERFORMED THE TESTING WANT HIM TO HAVE FAST FORWARD, BUT AFTER READING DR Js EMAILS, I AM CAUTIOUS ABOUT SHELLING OUT $1,100.00 FOR THE PROGRAM RIGHT NOW.
scoobi (ID=10) (Jun 26, 2001 9:24:29 PM)
re all of your children in mainstream school
CarolB (ID=18) (Jun 26, 2001 9:24:29 PM)
If they say "I don't know" they sound ignorant or stupid, if they say "I don't understand", that's a cue to the speaker.
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:24:51 PM)
I don't blame you Roxie. Has anyone here had success with Fast Forward? I haven't used it.
CarolB (ID=18) (Jun 26, 2001 9:25:06 PM)
Has anyone tried Earobics?
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:25:22 PM)
I work in a self contained class. We have 12 kids k-2 and they are terrific.
roxie (ID=17) (Jun 26, 2001 9:25:42 PM)
ONE OF THE DPI STAFF FOR NC STRONGLY SUGGESTED EAROBICS OVER FAST FORWARD TO US.
CarolB (ID=18) (Jun 26, 2001 9:25:43 PM)
Fast Forward is so intense and so long for a child, not to mention the expense.
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:26:10 PM)
I have earobics. I thought it moved forward kind of fast but I looked at it again recently and I like it.
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:26:25 PM)
It's also only about $50.
CarolB (ID=18) (Jun 26, 2001 9:26:25 PM)
Our district "expert" on auditory processing recommends Earobics over Fast Forward.
scoobi (ID=10) (Jun 26, 2001 9:26:49 PM)
IMy so will be going into a self contained class again next year for first grade The work they have done with him is amazing
roxie (ID=17) (Jun 26, 2001 9:26:52 PM)
OUR PUBLIC SCHOOLS HERE DO NOT EVEN ACKNOWLEDGE APD AS REQUIRING ANY SERVICES!!! I CHECKED THAT OPTION OUR LAST YEAR AND LEARNED QUICKLY HE WOULD GET NOTHING.
CarolB (ID=18) (Jun 26, 2001 9:27:06 PM)
They just came out with another Earobics for older kids.
scoobi (ID=10) (Jun 26, 2001 9:27:16 PM)
Roxie where do you live?
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:27:40 PM)
I plan on having my son classified 504 if he needs services or accomodations. So far he isn't classified because they have been giving him what he needs.

Hi Brenda
Brenda_C (ID=19) (Jun 26, 2001 9:28:14 PM)
Hi Everybody!
roxie (ID=17) (Jun 26, 2001 9:28:17 PM)
504 WILL ONLY PROVIDE ACCOM., NOT SERVICES.
CarolB (ID=18) (Jun 26, 2001 9:28:40 PM)
But, at least it provides something, if that's all you can get.
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:28:45 PM)
I'm hoping in third grade he'll be able to compensate.
roxie (ID=17) (Jun 26, 2001 9:28:48 PM)
WE CAN RECV. 504 IN OUR PRIVATE SCHOOL BECAUSE OF THE FED. LUNCH PROGRAM.
scoobi (ID=10) (Jun 26, 2001 9:29:11 PM)
rOXI MY HEART GOES OUT TO YOU ,
roxie (ID=17) (Jun 26, 2001 9:29:21 PM)
THANKS!!!
CarolB (ID=18) (Jun 26, 2001 9:29:36 PM)
Have you looked into public schools or other private schools.
roxie (ID=17) (Jun 26, 2001 9:29:45 PM)
CAROL B,
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:30:19 PM)
Do any of your kids have other issues? My son is very small for his age, very thin too. He has dry skin and constipation. I had his thyroid checked and it was fine.
Brenda_C (ID=19) (Jun 26, 2001 9:30:56 PM)
I know this is a chat for CAPD but does anyone on here have experience with dyslexia?
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:31:08 PM)
not much Brenda
CarolB (ID=18) (Jun 26, 2001 9:31:10 PM)
Mine don't. They are also very different personalities. One is outgoing and one is very quiet.
roxie (ID=17) (Jun 26, 2001 9:31:19 PM)
YES, OUR PUBLIC SCHOOLS DO NOTHING FOR APD OTHER THAN POSSIBLE CLASSROOM MOD. OTHER PRIVATE SCHOOLS ARE LIKE HIS, ARE NOT EQUIPT TO PROVIDE ACTUAL SERVICES. THE ONLY ONE THAT IS, RUNS ABOUT 6K A YEAR AND WE HAVE ONE GOING TO COLLEGE IN A YEAR.
CarolB (ID=18) (Jun 26, 2001 9:32:15 PM)
We have friends whose daughter has CAPD and they had her in a private school in SC first and it was a disaster. She failed everything.
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:32:48 PM)
Our audiologist remcommended having my son classified. I don't think he would be eligible because he is a good student and not disruptive but if he were having trouble with a major subject, I think they would provide resource center or support for him.
scoobi (ID=10) (Jun 26, 2001 9:33:04 PM)
NO OTHER SIGNIFICANT ISSUES JAZ, THAT'S ANOTHER MYSTIFYING HE LOOK PERFECTLY NORMAL
CarolB (ID=18) (Jun 26, 2001 9:33:34 PM)
They moved back here to NJ for a year and she did extremely well. She's older, 14, but was diagnosed here in NJ when she was in special preschool. They moved back down to SC and they found a Catholic school that had tracks and they put her in one of the slower tracks and she is doing really well.
roxie (ID=17) (Jun 26, 2001 9:33:45 PM)
A CLOSE FRIEND SON'S WAS DYS. THEY BROUGHT IN A TUTOR FROM THE LINDA MOOD BELL PROGRAM AND MADE GREAT STRIDES. THE MOM AND CHILD EVEN MOVED 60 MILES AWAY TO A LARGER CITY FOR HIM TO ATTEND A SPECIAL PRIVATE SCHOOL. $$$$$
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:34:21 PM)
Hooray for that mom.
CarolB (ID=18) (Jun 26, 2001 9:34:23 PM)
How old is your son? I probably missed that.
scoobi (ID=10) (Jun 26, 2001 9:34:35 PM)
carol was that school in southern jersey
roxie (ID=17) (Jun 26, 2001 9:34:35 PM)
10.5
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:34:36 PM)
It's a shame they had to move to get what he needed though.
Brenda_C (ID=19) (Jun 26, 2001 9:34:49 PM)
How can people afford that?
roxie (ID=17) (Jun 26, 2001 9:35:02 PM)
I HATE TO THINK WHAT IT HAS COST THEM.
CarolB (ID=18) (Jun 26, 2001 9:35:07 PM)
Scoobi, the public school or the private school?
Brenda_C (ID=19) (Jun 26, 2001 9:35:08 PM)
I can't afford FFWD, nevertheless moving.
scoobi (ID=10) (Jun 26, 2001 9:35:18 PM)

That would be hard
roxie (ID=17) (Jun 26, 2001 9:35:59 PM)
I WOULD LOVE TO COME UP WITH THE 5K TO SEND HIM TO THE LANMARK SUMMER PROGRAM.
scoobi (ID=10) (Jun 26, 2001 9:36:21 PM)
II'M IN
roxie (ID=17) (Jun 26, 2001 9:36:29 PM)
HAS ANYONE HEARD OF ANY OTHER SUMMER RESIDENTIAL PROGRAMS OUT THERE?
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:36:36 PM)
what is the Lanmark program?
Brenda_C (ID=19) (Jun 26, 2001 9:36:39 PM)
Not here in SE Texas
roxie (ID=17) (Jun 26, 2001 9:37:27 PM)
IT IS A BOARDING SCHOOL IN NEW ENGLAND AND IN THE SUMMER THEY HAVE A PROGRAM THAT ADDRESSES APD, ETC. USES ORTIN MATERIALS.
roxie (ID=17) (Jun 26, 2001 9:37:56 PM)
I THINK IT IS FOR 5 OR 6 WEEKS DURING THE SUMMER AND THE CHILDREN STAY ON CAMPUS.
scoobi (ID=10) (Jun 26, 2001 9:38:17 PM)
i COULDN'T PART WITH MY SON FOR THAT LONG,
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:38:23 PM)
Does insurance pay for any of it?
CarolB (ID=18) (Jun 26, 2001 9:38:41 PM)
Depending on the age of the child, that could be really hard on them, not to mention the parent.
roxie (ID=17) (Jun 26, 2001 9:39:02 PM)
I DON'T KNOW ABOUT INSURANCE, BUT OUR ACCOUNTANT SAID THAT WE COULD WRITE THE ENTIRE AMOUNT OFF FROM OUR TAXES BECAUSE IT WOULD BE A MEDICAL EXPENSE.
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:39:14 PM)
My older kids 10 & 8 are going to camp for a week this summer. I hope I can handle it.
CarolB (ID=18) (Jun 26, 2001 9:39:25 PM)
I haven't found insurance pays for anything, except they did pay for speech before one of mine got into school.
scoobi (ID=10) (Jun 26, 2001 9:39:28 PM)
wE JUST WENT AWAY FOR THE WEEKEND AND HE WANTED TO GO HOME ALMOST AS SOON AS HE GOT THERE
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:39:32 PM)
That's a good point Roxie.
roxie (ID=17) (Jun 26, 2001 9:39:47 PM)
BOTH OF MINE HAVE GONE AWAY FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS EVERY SUMMER TO CAMP. IT IS NO BIG DEAL FOR THEM.
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:40:13 PM)
I think my kids will love it. I'll have my 3 year old to keep me company.
CarolB (ID=18) (Jun 26, 2001 9:41:00 PM)
Roxie, have you tried Earobics?
roxie (ID=17) (Jun 26, 2001 9:41:03 PM)
WITH A 17 YEAR OLD FEMALE STILL AT HOME, SOMETIMES I THINK I WOULD LOVE HAVING ALL OF THEM GONE FOR A SUMMER.
scoobi (ID=10) (Jun 26, 2001 9:41:05 PM)
i'M ONE OF THOSE ONLY CHILD OVER-PROTECTIVE MANIC PARENTS
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:41:24 PM)
It's a traditional camp. I'm debating if I should say anything about CAPD. I don't want to prejudice them.
roxie (ID=17) (Jun 26, 2001 9:41:35 PM)
CAROL B, NO BUT I AM GOING TO ORDER IT NOW. WHAT CAN I LOOSE???
roxie (ID=17) (Jun 26, 2001 9:41:55 PM)
JAZ,
scoobi (ID=10) (Jun 26, 2001 9:42:14 PM)
aRE NY OF THESE PROGRAMS AVAILABLE AT THE TEACHERS RESOURCE LIBRARY
CarolB (ID=18) (Jun 26, 2001 9:42:14 PM)
It's kind of elementary in the beginning, but they move up to different levels as they progress and it's affordable. Start with the first one and then go on to the Step 1 for adolescents and adults.
roxie (ID=17) (Jun 26, 2001 9:42:23 PM)
I WOULD SAY SOMETHING TO THEM, BECAUSE YOU DO NOT WANT THEM THINKING THE CHILD IS INGNORING THEIR INSTRUCTIONS.
CarolB (ID=18) (Jun 26, 2001 9:42:35 PM)
Our schools are just getting them and I would say they are fairly progressive.
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:43:10 PM)
I thought of that Roxie. He's in a cabin with only 4 or 5 other kids and I'm hoping he'll be O.K. since it's a small group.
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:44:20 PM)
Fast Forward wouldn't be availalbe since it requires training but Earobics might be available at a Teacher Resource Center.
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:44:43 PM)
I loaned out my copy to the family of one of my students. I hope he loves it.
scoobi (ID=10) (Jun 26, 2001 9:44:50 PM)
dOES ANYONE NOTICE THAT SONGS ARE SO MUCH EASIER FOR THEIR KIDS TO PICK UP THE WORDS TO
CarolB (ID=18) (Jun 26, 2001 9:45:03 PM)
Yes, songs and tunes.
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:45:05 PM)
Music is great therapy
roxie (ID=17) (Jun 26, 2001 9:45:16 PM)
I HAVE THOROUGHLY ENJOYED THIS BRIEF CHAT, BUT I HAVE GOT TO RUN. THANK YOU ALL FOR THE SUPPORT. IT SURE MAKES ME FEEL LIKE WE ARE NOT THE ONLY ONES OUT THERE.
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:45:29 PM)
by Roxie, thanks
CarolB (ID=18) (Jun 26, 2001 9:45:32 PM)
Bye
Brenda_C (ID=19) (Jun 26, 2001 9:46:48 PM)
My daughter cannot distinguish hardly any words in music.
CarolB (ID=18) (Jun 26, 2001 9:47:10 PM)
How old is she?
Brenda_C (ID=19) (Jun 26, 2001 9:47:21 PM)
6
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:47:24 PM)
When I was a kid, I used to mess up words in songs and my brothers would tease me.
CarolB (ID=18) (Jun 26, 2001 9:47:34 PM)
Does she pick up the tune?
Brenda_C (ID=19) (Jun 26, 2001 9:47:47 PM)
yes, but she can't make out the words
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:47:58 PM)
It's the background noise.
Brenda_C (ID=19) (Jun 26, 2001 9:48:03 PM)
yeah
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:48:04 PM)
Can she rhyme?
CarolB (ID=18) (Jun 26, 2001 9:48:07 PM)
But, at least she can pick up the tune and the pattern.
Brenda_C (ID=19) (Jun 26, 2001 9:48:13 PM)
yes, she can rhyme
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:48:54 PM)
I still have trouble having a conversation in a noisy place.
Jaz (ID=14) (Jun 26, 2001 9:49:09 PM)
frustrating!
CarolB (ID=18) (Jun 26, 2001 9:49:19 PM)
Background noise is not an issue for my 2. That's the thing with CAPD it has so many different variables.
CarolB (ID=18) (Jun 26, 2001 9:50:42 PM)
But, that doesn't mean they aren't distracted by things cause when they try to concentrate really hard they are easily distracted.
scoobi (ID=10) (Jun 26, 2001 9:50:44 PM)

Baker34 (ID=21) (Jun 26, 2001 10:07:59 PM)
