Hi

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 8:32:01 PM)
I am new to this support group and looking for ideas.

debbie (ID=62) (May 29, 2001 8:32:15 PM)

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 8:32:21 PM)
Hello

debbie (ID=62) (May 29, 2001 8:32:29 PM)

shari (ID=57) (May 29, 2001 8:32:40 PM)

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 8:32:46 PM)
My 7 year old daughter has apd.

shari (ID=57) (May 29, 2001 8:32:50 PM)

debbie (ID=62) (May 29, 2001 8:32:53 PM)

debbie (ID=62) (May 29, 2001 8:33:10 PM)
yes, my daughter who is almost 10 has apd.she was diagnosed almost 3 years ago

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 8:33:58 PM)
Karalyn was diagnosed 2 years ago. She has been receiving a tremendous support at her school, but we just haven't found the secret to helping her learn.

debbie (ID=62) (May 29, 2001 8:34:44 PM)
Sherri, that is wonderful that you r school is being supportive

shari (ID=57) (May 29, 2001 8:35:03 PM)
My son has been in gifted since 1st grade. Tested LD last year and I just knew we were missing something else so I had requested an Assistive Technology Eval and they suspected APD and he tested positive for Distortion to Noise

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 8:35:06 PM)
I know. I have come to know many parents who haven't been so lucky.

debbie (ID=62) (May 29, 2001 8:35:07 PM)
hi MIchele

Carol (ID=65) (May 29, 2001 8:35:32 PM)
Great and you? Nice colors!

debbie (ID=62) (May 29, 2001 8:35:44 PM)
Thought it was time for a change in here *LOL*

michele (ID=64) (May 29, 2001 8:35:49 PM)
Hi Debbie

Carol (ID=65) (May 29, 2001 8:35:54 PM)
Looks good.

michele (ID=64) (May 29, 2001 8:36:01 PM)
How are you all tonight

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 8:36:09 PM)
Doing good.

debbie (ID=62) (May 29, 2001 8:36:14 PM)
Just out of curiosity, may I ask where everyone is from? I am in Jacksonville, Florida

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 8:36:24 PM)
Raleigh, North Carolina

shari (ID=57) (May 29, 2001 8:36:29 PM)
I'm in Miami

michele (ID=64) (May 29, 2001 8:36:35 PM)
In Jackson NJ

Carol (ID=65) (May 29, 2001 8:36:40 PM)
Revere, Massachusetts 6 miles North of Boston

shari (ID=57) (May 29, 2001 8:37:45 PM)
My son was tested thru the school system and I may insist on an IEE. How do I go about finding someone qualified to do the testing.

Carol (ID=65) (May 29, 2001 8:38:26 PM)
That was my problem, I didn't know who was qualified but had to settle on who did the testing.

debbie (ID=62) (May 29, 2001 8:38:29 PM)
(This user has left DigiChat) (IP = 172.128.13.45)

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 8:38:31 PM)
All of our testing was thru the school system.

Carol (ID=65) (May 29, 2001 8:38:50 PM)
We did testing at the school and at Children's Hosp.

shari (ID=57) (May 29, 2001 8:39:12 PM)
Are there specific tests that should be done. What do I look for

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 8:39:51 PM)
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart) (IP = 172.137.51.215)

Carol (ID=65) (May 29, 2001 8:39:55 PM)
We had to wait months for each appointment at the hospital. Are you testing for CAPD only or are there other issues?

Carol (ID=65) (May 29, 2001 8:40:07 PM)
chat gremlins, Debbie?

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 8:40:21 PM)
yep

shari (ID=57) (May 29, 2001 8:40:23 PM)
My sons results do not list any tests. Just so called results and reccommendations

Carol (ID=65) (May 29, 2001 8:40:57 PM)
We had that happen and was seen next by the developmental dept. at the hospital and they pinpointed the auditory weakness.

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 8:41:00 PM)
my screen still is not right

shari (ID=57) (May 29, 2001 8:41:05 PM)
Just CAPD Carol. No other problems with any of his other testing or results

Carol (ID=65) (May 29, 2001 8:41:17 PM)
What's wrong with your screen, debbie?

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 8:41:38 PM)
it's distorted and not showing names....im having trouble with my aol connection....

Carol (ID=65) (May 29, 2001 8:42:16 PM)
Shari, I know Dr. J has suggested different approaches to testing. I have to rely on the audiologist that I have an appointment with because as far as I know, she's the only one in the area that specifies with CAPD issues.

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 8:42:16 PM)
did the message about the morning chat come through before i got booted out?

Carol (ID=65) (May 29, 2001 8:42:41 PM)
I didn't get one, Debbie.

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 8:42:46 PM)
no

michele (ID=64) (May 29, 2001 8:42:56 PM)
no

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 8:43:05 PM)
The Tuesday morning chat with Dr J is going to be on a slightly different schedule starting next week.

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 8:43:24 PM)
instead of being every other Tuesday, it will be the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 8:43:39 PM)
I think this will make it easier for people to remember when the chat is

Carol (ID=65) (May 29, 2001 8:44:07 PM)
You should see my calendar with all reminders about all the chats. And I still forget half of them.

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 8:44:34 PM)
i can understand that! I have to try and simplify things as much as I can. =)

Carol (ID=65) (May 29, 2001 8:45:05 PM)
Curiousity now: Do any of your kids, CAPD or not, have problems with night mares and are frightened in the night?

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 8:45:14 PM)
We are starting the in person support group here in Jacksonville in 2 weeks

Carol (ID=65) (May 29, 2001 8:45:38 PM)
Oh, I am so jealous, an in person support group!

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 8:45:48 PM)
Sarah is easily scared of many things, not during the night in paticular

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 8:45:49 PM)
My daughter has alot of different fears. She is very dependent.

Carol (ID=65) (May 29, 2001 8:46:11 PM)
Krystie too. Night time is beginning to be very hard on both of us.

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 8:46:32 PM)
The local support group is for anyone involved in Exceptional Student Education of any kind. I am working in conjunction with another agency here.

shari (ID=57) (May 29, 2001 8:46:53 PM)
My 13 year old has night terrors

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 8:46:58 PM)
Is there a local support group in the Raleigh, NC area?

Carol (ID=67) (May 29, 2001 8:47:03 PM)
gremlins got me!

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 8:47:25 PM)
This will be the first local for the NCAPD. We hope to expand once I get this one going

Carol (ID=67) (May 29, 2001 8:47:55 PM)
It sounds like a great idea.

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 8:48:06 PM)
I would love to help start one in this area. Please let me know how when you are ready.

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 8:48:14 PM)
I"m really excited! the lady I am working with is wonderful

Carol (ID=67) (May 29, 2001 8:48:43 PM)
When and where do you meet and how do you get the word out?

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 8:48:52 PM)
Sherri, if you are serious about starting one in your area, you would first need to contact others in your area to find out how much support or interest is in your area

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 8:49:03 PM)
I have talked to many parents about CAPD just in talking and have met 6 or 7 parents just by accident. I can't believe how many children have this.

Hi Lynne

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 8:49:44 PM)
Do I send out flyers or who do I contact other than those I know?

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 8:49:53 PM)
HI all

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 8:49:58 PM)
We are meeting at a local agency here that works with the ADA. I went to them looking for help with the schools and through our talks, we've decided to start the local group. I"ve been looking for help, and they've been looking for a parent to help so it was a great match

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 8:50:23 PM)
What state are you in Debbie?

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 8:50:26 PM)
That is a place I can start here.

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 8:50:43 PM)
Sherri, do you know of any audiologists or local agencies that may help you?

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 8:50:50 PM)
I am in Florida Lynne

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 8:51:26 PM)
Any one from VA?

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 8:51:30 PM)
The NCAPD would be more than willing to help in any way. Once a decision is made to go forward, we can putout announcements and list meeting times and places on the site.

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 8:51:36 PM)
Only through the school system. I just met a new audiologist at an IEP meeting for Kara this morning. She's very open to helping as much as she can and I'm sure she would send me in the right direction.

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 8:52:00 PM)
Contact her and email me at debbie@ncapd.org and let me know what the aud says

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 8:52:30 PM)
I'll give her a call in the morning and will send you an email as soon as I get some information.

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 8:52:30 PM)
Does anyone know if there has ever been some media coverage on CAPD?

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 8:52:45 PM)
yes lynne there has been, but not much.

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 8:52:47 PM)
My email address is srbd5@cs.com

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 8:52:50 PM)
I am talking like the "Today Show" or someting

Carol (ID=67) (May 29, 2001 8:53:12 PM)
Lynne, that wouldn't be a bad idea. Most of the people I talk to about it has never heard of it. This includes a couple SLP's.

shari (ID=57) (May 29, 2001 8:53:17 PM)
great idea

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 8:53:26 PM)
not yet........i saw one article on the CBS evenign news with Dan Rather a while back

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 8:53:37 PM)
our pathologists didn't know anything about it either

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 8:53:42 PM)
I know I have personally been starting to contact a few shows....hope to hear back

Carol (ID=67) (May 29, 2001 8:53:42 PM)
Wish I caught it, debbie.

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 8:54:03 PM)
Several of the parents I talked to have horror stories about their children getting no help in the schools they attended. One parent actually had a teacher say her child is "stupid".

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 8:54:08 PM)
It's probably been 6 to 8 months ago..it was very short

shari (ID=57) (May 29, 2001 8:54:16 PM)
Think I'll e-mail CBS for a transcript

Carol (ID=67) (May 29, 2001 8:54:18 PM)
Mine was supposedly lazy.

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 8:54:36 PM)
Mine "wasn't failing yet"

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 8:54:44 PM)
Sherri I am literally battling with my school tooth and nail right now. It's not a good situation at all

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 8:54:45 PM)
he was just spacing out in class

Carol (ID=67) (May 29, 2001 8:54:46 PM)
Mine still isn't, lynne

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 8:54:56 PM)
it never is

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 8:55:09 PM)
They wanted to wait till he was

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 8:55:20 PM)
what a bunch of rectal opennings!!!

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 8:55:26 PM)
I copied 28 tests that Sarah scored an "F" on and took them to the director of student services on Friday. This were only the ones I saved.

Carol (ID=67) (May 29, 2001 8:55:29 PM)
LOL I like that one, lynne

Sheri (ID=69) (May 29, 2001 8:55:31 PM)
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart) (IP = 172.143.123.246)

shari (ID=57) (May 29, 2001 8:55:44 PM)
I didn't have those problems. The teachers all kept agreeing that they were missing something . That he was so brightr that whatever the problem was he was able to compensate

Carol (ID=67) (May 29, 2001 8:55:49 PM)
Hi Sheri

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 8:55:55 PM)
Her final grade is not an "F" so she's not failing yet....*L*

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 8:55:57 PM)
Any one here homeschooling?

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 8:56:00 PM)
Part of the problem, I think, is some of the testing. It is really easy for a child to test just over the line for receiving services and they fall thru the cracks.

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 8:56:06 PM)
I got that stuff too.

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 8:56:13 PM)
it sure is sherri.

Sheri (ID=69) (May 29, 2001 8:56:19 PM)
Hi there, from So. Cal. new here

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 8:56:29 PM)
lynne im thinking about it, but dont knwo how i could manage it with work

Carol (ID=67) (May 29, 2001 8:56:31 PM)
Welcome, Sheri

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 8:56:42 PM)
welcome to the chat sheri

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 8:56:47 PM)
Do you work part time or full?

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 8:56:51 PM)
full time

Sheri (ID=69) (May 29, 2001 8:57:04 PM)
Thank you. 5 year old girl just diagnosed officially.

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 8:57:07 PM)
I know people who are doing it with part time jobs.

shari (ID=57) (May 29, 2001 8:57:11 PM)
this could get confusing Shari, Sheri, Sherri

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 8:57:18 PM)
haha

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 8:57:18 PM)
I've been extremely lucky because the teachers new something wasn't right and the speech therapist started services before all the tests were in.

Sheri (ID=69) (May 29, 2001 8:57:18 PM)
Good golly

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 8:57:34 PM)
You were truly blessed.

Carol (ID=67) (May 29, 2001 8:57:44 PM)
That's why I'm confused. OK I'lll pay better attention

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 8:57:47 PM)
Yes!!!

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 8:59:56 PM)
I think the norm is to go to them and say, "I think there is something wrong" and they tell you know, you get pissed and they start to take notice.

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 8:59:56 PM)
Then they give you the runaround and you threaten them with court and they all of a sudden can find classes and services for your child.

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 8:59:56 PM)
pretty grim? Pretty right on?

Carol (ID=67) (May 29, 2001 8:59:57 PM)
sherri, we found out last September that she had an audiological problem and waiting until July for an appointment with an audiologist

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 8:59:57 PM)
Someone mentioned the press earlier. The NCAPD will be contacting different press organizations over te summer hoping to do some stories. ONe thing that is usually asked is howmany members there are in the NCAPD. Please think about becoming a member. The more member's the NCAPD has, the louder our voice will be in brining about a public awareness of APD

shari (ID=57) (May 29, 2001 8:59:57 PM)
how do i search the archives for info on testing

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 8:59:57 PM)
One of Kara's biggest problems is auditory memory. She forgets things we just know she's learned. Like days of the week. She is in 2nd grade and still gets days of the week and months of the year confused. How much a dime, nickel, quarter is worth, etc.

Sheri (ID=69) (May 29, 2001 8:59:57 PM)
anyone have a young child 5-7 with CAPD?

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 8:59:57 PM)

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 9:01:56 PM)
We just decided today to put her in a CC1 (Cross Categorical) class instead of the reg. 3rd grade class next year.

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 9:02:02 PM)
depends on the age.

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 9:03:10 PM)
Kara is just realizing that

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:03:19 PM)
They are seperate archives Carol

Carol (ID=67) (May 29, 2001 9:03:37 PM)

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 9:03:39 PM)
Greg is only 8 but sometimes he will remark on not having any really good friends.

shari (ID=70) (May 29, 2001 9:04:07 PM)
thanks debbie I'll give it a try

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:04:13 PM)
we see the lack of close friends with Sarah also. Over the summer I"m hoping to do more sleep overs to help build them friendships

Carol (ID=67) (May 29, 2001 9:04:16 PM)
Krystie cries easily but not as depressed as she was in the fall. It was really bad then.

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 9:04:21 PM)
He has been lucky to find one nice boy who has similar problems. Sometimes they could play for hours and not say much at all.

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:04:31 PM)
Shari, if you have any trouble, please contact me at debbie@ncapd.org

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 9:04:38 PM)
I can't imagine that. Poor kid

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 9:04:55 PM)
And fir girls, friends are sooo important.

michele (ID=64) (May 29, 2001 9:05:03 PM)
Im sorry my oldest was talking to me

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 9:05:06 PM)
boys are a little different

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:05:14 PM)
There is one boy at school that Sarah has made friends with . She says the other kids pick on him too because he has ADD, so they decided to be friends.

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:05:20 PM)
that's sooooooooooo sad

That is sad, debbie.

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 9:05:50 PM)
did you see that piece on the Today Show about the little boy with ADD?

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 9:06:00 PM)
no

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:06:00 PM)
no, I missed it

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 9:06:02 PM)
how he was picked on and wanted to die but then he

Carol (ID=67) (May 29, 2001 9:06:05 PM)
missed it

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 9:06:27 PM)
went to the media and told his story and his school is starting this new "buddy" program

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 9:06:32 PM)
it was very sad.

michele (ID=64) (May 29, 2001 9:06:34 PM)
My son was in the fourth grade when he started to be the class clown

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 9:06:47 PM)
that is very sad

shari (ID=70) (May 29, 2001 9:06:48 PM)

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 9:06:57 PM)
I know my son, was treated like a dog. The kids did everything for him in class or ordered him around so bad

Carol (ID=67) (May 29, 2001 9:07:05 PM)
the buddy thing is great. Krystie now has 2 buddies that are very helpful.

he didnt want the kids to laugh at him but with him so he thought this was the solution

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 9:07:19 PM)
They would tell him where to sit and if he could have scissors or not.

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:07:21 PM)
One thing the NCAPD wants to do is a page entitled "The Many Faces of APD"..on this page we could post a pic of any one with APD and then you could write a story to go with it. If you are interested, please let me knwo.

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 9:07:32 PM)
It was awful.

SheriCA (ID=71) (May 29, 2001 9:07:44 PM)
I'm back, computer problems

Carol (ID=67) (May 29, 2001 9:07:54 PM)
Hi Sheri, thought so.

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 9:08:07 PM)
wouldn't it be great if we could find an actor(ess) with a child with APD?

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 9:08:21 PM)
Then there would be a spokes woman/man

SheriCA (ID=71) (May 29, 2001 9:08:25 PM)
sure would get the word out

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 9:08:37 PM)
That would wonderful.

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:08:43 PM)
Lynne, the more APD is publicized the more likely a "spokesperson" will find us!!

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 9:08:44 PM)
I mean if dyslexia could have Tom Cruise, maybe we could get Rosie.

Carol (ID=67) (May 29, 2001 9:08:48 PM)
How would someone find out about that especially when actors like their privacy so much

I think Debbie has the key

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 9:09:17 PM)
yess

shari (ID=72) (May 29, 2001 9:09:20 PM)
Debbie, I tried that web site but it was not available

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:09:46 PM)
I've talked to a friend who use to play professional baseball about the spokesperson idea....he's willing to help when the time is right

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:10:06 PM)
let me try it shari

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 9:10:23 PM)
Wow! Neat. They say a blind person has a better chance at success than a hearing impaired person.

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 9:10:25 PM)
Until very recently, I don't think CAPD was even considered a learning disability, was it?

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:10:28 PM)
it came up ok....recheck the way you typed it

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 9:10:36 PM)
I find that sooo true.

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 9:10:47 PM)
nope

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:10:57 PM)
Sherri, it still is not recognized officially as an LD..that's why we have to ban together!!!

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 9:11:02 PM)
My district doesn't even have a placement for these kids.

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 9:11:33 PM)

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 9:12:35 PM)

language and speech impaired due to auditory processing disorder is what we need.................because a child with capd can have 100% hearing

SheriCAL (ID=73) (May 29, 2001 9:13:08 PM)
This is getting embarassing, sorry ladies, computer trouble

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:13:29 PM)
Sheri, it is trouble with the chat too, I've been booted a few times today, It's not you... =)

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 9:13:31 PM)
I have had the most success working and using some of techiques for my deaf students with my son.

Carol (ID=67) (May 29, 2001 9:13:37 PM)
debbie, what if the child doesn't have language and speech impairment?

SheriCAL (ID=73) (May 29, 2001 9:13:41 PM)
It wouldn't let me in under same name

shari (ID=72) (May 29, 2001 9:13:45 PM)
thanks Debbie it worked, maybe i did type it in wrong

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 9:13:54 PM)
my daughter has 100% hearing in a perfect world (no other noise). It's only when background noise is introduced that her scores drop.

SheriCAL (ID=73) (May 29, 2001 9:14:12 PM)
how old is she Sherri?

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:14:12 PM)
Then auditory processing disorder.....or what ever the main presenting problem is with apd as the underlying factor

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 9:14:18 PM)
7

shari (ID=72) (May 29, 2001 9:14:28 PM)
Jareds is noise also

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 9:14:36 PM)
Then you would say your child is a visual learner?

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 9:14:41 PM)
So is my son

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 9:14:47 PM)
But her auditory memory is terrible. She just can't remember things.

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:14:51 PM)
Sherri, we went to audiologists for 4 years before Sarah's apd was diagnosed since she has 100 % hearing

Carol (ID=67) (May 29, 2001 9:14:59 PM)
That's the problem, now, debbie, APD isn't enough for the schools. without those other problems, there is no problem, to them.

hi

SheriCAL (ID=73) (May 29, 2001 9:15:37 PM)
I have a very important question as fighting an IEP right now

jb (ID=74) (May 29, 2001 9:15:40 PM)
hello everyone

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:15:49 PM)
for those who are joining in...the morning chats with Dr J are going to start being the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month from 8:30 to 10 am

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:15:59 PM)
go ahead Sherical

SheriCAL (ID=73) (May 29, 2001 9:16:13 PM)
Has anyone had a child transition from SDC to mainstream Kindergarten?

shari (ID=72) (May 29, 2001 9:16:15 PM)
IDEA says that our children are entitled to a FREE APPROPRIATE PUBLIC EDUCATION (FAPE) they are required to find wwhat is getting in the way of our childrens learning

jb (ID=74) (May 29, 2001 9:16:17 PM)
I was wondering why I missed the Dr this am...

SheriCAL (ID=73) (May 29, 2001 9:16:24 PM)
what was provided in classroom?

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:17:07 PM)
jb, i looked at the transcripts, you two kept missing each other, Im the one who forgot to send the chat notice! Please accept my apology

cindi (ID=75) (May 29, 2001 9:17:40 PM)
i need some serious help my daughter is in third grade and can barely spell her own name.

jb (ID=74) (May 29, 2001 9:17:56 PM)
that's okay, i coulldn't figure it out, being that I am new to this.

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:18:05 PM)
personally, my daughter has been on a 504 for 3 years, and I am currently fighting the school for additional services. We are headed for due process over the summer

SheriCAL (ID=73) (May 29, 2001 9:18:24 PM)
is 504 same as IEP?

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:18:29 PM)
NO!

SheriCAL (ID=73) (May 29, 2001 9:18:39 PM)
educate me please

jb (ID=74) (May 29, 2001 9:18:42 PM)
cindi, has your daughter been tested? what did htey find?

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 9:18:57 PM)
Cindi, my daughter is going into a new class where her core subjects are handled by a special ed teacher with alot of 1 on 1 time, then she outsources for specials like PE, Art, etc.

Carol (ID=67) (May 29, 2001 9:19:02 PM)
So debbie, you still didn't qualify for the iep and without it you can't get the services she needs, right

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:19:40 PM)
504 is covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1973 The biggest difference is that on an IEP, there are specific goals set forth. On a 504 there are accomodations, but no goals. Many people will limit the services you can get under a 504, although that is not right

cindi (ID=75) (May 29, 2001 9:19:41 PM)
she has an iq of 120 i'm told that is 10 short of gifted, they say she may have capd but are pushing add

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 9:19:43 PM)
Is that an option your school offers?

SheriCAL (ID=73) (May 29, 2001 9:20:29 PM)
Anyone get a "classroom aide" for full inclusion? thank you Debbie for explanation. We have IEP since 3.5 years old

jb (ID=74) (May 29, 2001 9:20:33 PM)
what makes them think she may have capd, cindi?

Carol (ID=67) (May 29, 2001 9:20:45 PM)
cindi, that's just where I'm at with Krystie, IQ 118 and pushing me to try ritalin because, who knows, it might be ADD or might work!

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:20:51 PM)
Carol, She is still being denied language..I talked to the Director of Student services on Friday. I am to receive a letter from him by this Friday.

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:21:07 PM)
AFter I receive that letter I can turn in the letter for a "fair hearing"

shari (ID=72) (May 29, 2001 9:21:16 PM)
what do you been being denied Language?

Carol (ID=67) (May 29, 2001 9:21:17 PM)
That's so sad, debbie

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:21:40 PM)
I know services are being denied, because he's already referred to coming in for mediation...

cindi (ID=75) (May 29, 2001 9:21:48 PM)
i went to a hearing specialist they think she shows signs but the school is doing nothing. head phones that is it. i need to knw what is available for me to help her

jb (ID=74) (May 29, 2001 9:22:33 PM)
there is a SCAN test , TAPS. Has anyone heard of the CTOPP test?

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 9:22:52 PM)
No, what is that?

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:23:06 PM)
Although my daughter is using the FM trainer and has some modifications in place in the classroom, I am seeking remeadiation services as well . If the school would remeadiate instead of accomodate, we would get alot further

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:23:26 PM)
I"ve heard the ctopp mentioned, but not sure what it is...

SheriCAL (ID=73) (May 29, 2001 9:23:35 PM)
I got my diagnosis from an Audiologist who specializes in CAPD, no, did scan test TAAS & SSW & PS-P

jb (ID=74) (May 29, 2001 9:23:36 PM)
it is not specific for capd. i read about it o n the IDA website. I asked that my daughter have the test. my school system does not have it....

cindi (ID=75) (May 29, 2001 9:23:48 PM)
the school will not pay for more test i can not afford it

shari (ID=72) (May 29, 2001 9:23:54 PM)
Cindy you need to send a letter asking for a CST. then you request the testing that you want. If they refuse they have to give you a Prior Written Notice within 10 days as to why they are refusing

Diane (ID=76) (May 29, 2001 9:24:45 PM)
Hi Carol debbie

Diane (ID=76) (May 29, 2001 9:25:22 PM)
Hi Sherri

jb (ID=74) (May 29, 2001 9:25:26 PM)
CTOPP- Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing. Phonemes are the basic part of the english language--the SOUNDS...

SheriCAL (ID=73) (May 29, 2001 9:25:48 PM)
I need to ask again if anyone had preschool special day class child transition to Kindergarten?

cindi (ID=75) (May 29, 2001 9:26:03 PM)
the teachers in my school are more concerned with my lack of math skills than the fact that my daughter is failing. i called the state and now the priciple and teachers tell me her problem stems from the fact that she is an only child. could this be true?

jb (ID=74) (May 29, 2001 9:26:17 PM)
It makes sense that if you have CAPD that you will have problem with phonemes.

shari (ID=72) (May 29, 2001 9:26:25 PM)
SheriCal what are those test you mentioned

Diane (ID=76) (May 29, 2001 9:26:39 PM)
Sherri I work with pre-school and kindergartners

SheriCAL (ID=73) (May 29, 2001 9:27:00 PM)
Shari, do you want the whole names?

shari (ID=72) (May 29, 2001 9:27:01 PM)
i sincerely doubt it Cindi

Diane (ID=76) (May 29, 2001 9:27:04 PM)
We idi have a transition day

shari (ID=72) (May 29, 2001 9:27:09 PM)
please

jb (ID=74) (May 29, 2001 9:27:31 PM)
Our SLP said it really shows how CAPD affects learning.

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:27:35 PM)
sherical...my daughter has been reg education all the time she's been in school

SheriCAL (ID=73) (May 29, 2001 9:27:36 PM)
Diane, what do you think about classroom aides, ever seen that for Kindergarten CAPD?

Diane (ID=76) (May 29, 2001 9:27:43 PM)
for pre-schoolers to K and K's to 1st

cindi (ID=75) (May 29, 2001 9:27:54 PM)
how do i get them to listen i go to an m team meeting tommorrow and i know they are going to hold her back another year.

SheriCAL (ID=73) (May 29, 2001 9:28:02 PM)
Debbie, what did they provide in the classroom at Kindergarten?

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:28:10 PM)
Cindi, ask the school why being an only child would make your child be poor in math? What are they basing that conclusion on?

shari (ID=72) (May 29, 2001 9:28:17 PM)
SheriCal there is a difference between a classroom aide and a one on one

Diane (ID=76) (May 29, 2001 9:28:21 PM)
Sheri i am and aide but have not seen any children dx'd as CAPD

Diane (ID=76) (May 29, 2001 9:28:41 PM)
just other Language issues

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:28:42 PM)
We did nto know she was APD until 1st grade.. In K we knew there were problems, so I did alot of phonics games on the computer and one on one help with her on letters and sounds

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 9:28:44 PM)
Cindi, the only way they can be sure of anything is to test her!

cindi (ID=75) (May 29, 2001 9:28:54 PM)
i dont know. i was also told she would never learn to read without medication.

SheriCAL (ID=73) (May 29, 2001 9:29:08 PM)
Yes, I am talking "classroom aide" not personal, what is dx'd?

shari (ID=72) (May 29, 2001 9:29:13 PM)
medication for what

Carol (ID=67) (May 29, 2001 9:29:16 PM)
debbie, you didn't suspect a problem before age 5?

cindi (ID=75) (May 29, 2001 9:29:19 PM)
add

Diane (ID=76) (May 29, 2001 9:29:29 PM)
My district is really just getting up to speed on CAPD

shari (ID=72) (May 29, 2001 9:29:32 PM)
Who is diagnosing ADD

cindi (ID=75) (May 29, 2001 9:29:53 PM)
the teacher her transition teacher to be specific

shari (ID=72) (May 29, 2001 9:30:11 PM)
Who gave the teacher an MD degree?

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:30:30 PM)
I knew at age 2 there wasa problem..we went to audiolgist from age 2 til 6 before she was diagnosed. at age 5 we went to an audiolgist for a referral of "speech disfluency and auditory processing": The aud was not familiar with apd and did a hearing test.

cindi (ID=75) (May 29, 2001 9:30:32 PM)
i dont think they have a teaching degree

Diane (ID=76) (May 29, 2001 9:30:45 PM)
I am a classroom aide for spec needs kids but all that I have worked with so far have been autistic or physically challenged

shari (ID=72) (May 29, 2001 9:30:48 PM)
Don't get me wrong all 4 of my kids are ADD and have all been or are on Med for it at sometime or another.

Carol (ID=67) (May 29, 2001 9:31:01 PM)
That's the road we took, too

cindi (ID=75) (May 29, 2001 9:31:30 PM)
i dont belive she needs the medication she doesnt show the signs

Diane (ID=76) (May 29, 2001 9:31:34 PM)
I have only done it for this school year

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:31:37 PM)
At the time. the aud told me everything was ok and to basically go home.

shari (ID=72) (May 29, 2001 9:31:46 PM)
What accommodations are they giving her in the classroom for her ADD

Diane (ID=76) (May 29, 2001 9:31:46 PM)
my son is APD

SheriCAL (ID=73) (May 29, 2001 9:31:55 PM)
Debbie, oh my gosh, how could an Audiologist not be familiar with APD? We had similar exp. with age 2, daughter now 5 but has diagnosis from Audiologist

Carol (ID=67) (May 29, 2001 9:32:01 PM)
Here too, and that's why I am so late in getting the diagnosis, I listened to him!

shari (ID=72) (May 29, 2001 9:32:23 PM)
If her ADD is gettiing in the way of her learning she is entitled to an IEP under Other HEalth Impaired

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:32:57 PM)
SheriCal, the dx of APD is just not becoming known to many audiologist......that's why it is so important to make sure an aud is familiar with APD before you go for testing. I learned the hard way and Sarah paid the price

jb (ID=74) (May 29, 2001 9:33:05 PM)
Everyone I have spoke to said they won't do the audiological testing for capd before age 6.

SheriCAL (ID=73) (May 29, 2001 9:33:15 PM)
THank you Diane for the info about Aide

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:33:18 PM)
There are many aud who do not believe apd is a legitimate dx or disorder

Carol (ID=67) (May 29, 2001 9:33:19 PM)
I have to call it a night. Good night to all of you.

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:33:30 PM)
goodnight Carol

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 9:33:30 PM)

Welcome Sherr

SheriCAL (ID=73) (May 29, 2001 9:34:35 PM)
Debbie, wow, I guess my Audiologist is on the ball. Like I said she calls herself a specialist in CAPD

jb (ID=74) (May 29, 2001 9:34:47 PM)
I am told my daughter cannot be diagnosed with capd unitl age six.

Diane (ID=76) (May 29, 2001 9:34:58 PM)
SheriCAL you are lucky :)

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:35:07 PM)
Cindi on my website CAPD : From the Heart of a Mother there is a story called Michael's REading Success Story about a boy who the teachers said would NEVER read. YOu might want to read it. The story is incredible

SheriCAL (ID=73) (May 29, 2001 9:35:11 PM)
Followed my daughter for 1.5 years. Yes, I know. The age is 5

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:35:21 PM)
Sheri, who is your aud?

SheriCAL (ID=73) (May 29, 2001 9:35:37 PM)
Carol Atikins, Laguna Hills, CA

jb (ID=74) (May 29, 2001 9:35:38 PM)

Atkins

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:35:57 PM)
I've heard of Carol, I believe she is listed on the NCAPD referral program.

I'm sure, where do you live Debbie?

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:36:20 PM)
I"m in Florida

SheriCAL (ID=73) (May 29, 2001 9:36:31 PM)
ahhh, a bit far

cindi (ID=75) (May 29, 2001 9:36:45 PM)
(This user has left DigiChat) (IP = 172.138.102.245)

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:37:00 PM)
I"m working now with the University of Florida at Gainesville. There are some excellent audiolgists over there

jbb (ID=77) (May 29, 2001 9:37:06 PM)
Why am I consistently told that the official dx for capd cannnot come until age 6?

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 9:37:26 PM)
I was told that too, I don't understand why.

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:37:35 PM)
One reason that many aud will not test below the age of 6 is that there are not norms for the test that are under age 6

SheriCAL (ID=73) (May 29, 2001 9:37:40 PM)
Debbie, that sounds great. I have always heard 5 years old

jbb (ID=77) (May 29, 2001 9:38:32 PM)
My daughter if 5 now. Did poorly on the SCAN,TAPS and the CTOPP. Based on those they believe she has capd

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 9:38:52 PM)
I had no idea how hard it is for so many to get the right diagnosis for their children.

SheriCAL (ID=73) (May 29, 2001 9:38:52 PM)
jbb is she in Preschool?

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:38:52 PM)
There are some audiologists now who are working with a control group of kids to set up norms under the age of 6, but until we have those norms, we really dont have anything to compare a childs test results to

jbb (ID=77) (May 29, 2001 9:39:13 PM)
yup. just graduated the other day.

SheriCAL (ID=73) (May 29, 2001 9:39:37 PM)
will she go to regular kindergarten jbb?

jbb (ID=77) (May 29, 2001 9:39:48 PM)
she is going to kindergarten in the fall. she is being eval now by the CST again.

SheriCAL (ID=73) (May 29, 2001 9:40:04 PM)
what is CST?

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:40:24 PM)
The other side of the coin for testing kids that young is the maturation of the central nervous system. Becasue the auditory system is part of this system, people are reluctant to dx too young since the CNS is still maturing at a rapid rate.

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:40:30 PM)
CST...child study team

jbb (ID=77) (May 29, 2001 9:40:34 PM)
probably a collaborative kindergarten. she went to a reg preschool, went 2x wk for sl therapy for auditoy processing.

jbb (ID=77) (May 29, 2001 9:40:53 PM)
debbie- i remember reading that now....

SheriCAL (ID=73) (May 29, 2001 9:41:02 PM)
ok. Thank you,we all have different terms

SheriCAL (ID=73) (May 29, 2001 9:41:14 PM)
is that a special kindergarten jbb?

SheriCAL (ID=73) (May 29, 2001 9:41:40 PM)
We are transitioning and are freaked out about throwing her to 20-1 ratio

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:41:47 PM)
jbb..even though there may not be a diagnosis in place. if you see your child has problems with phonics (example only) you can still workon phonics without the dx

jbb (ID=77) (May 29, 2001 9:41:53 PM)
yes- a reg ed teacher and a special ed teacher. the spec ed teacher will only be there 40 min.

SheriCAL (ID=73) (May 29, 2001 9:42:12 PM)
oh ok. We don't have that here, its one or the other

Diane (ID=76) (May 29, 2001 9:42:19 PM)
SheriCal they have no aide at all in K classroom ?

SheriCAL (ID=73) (May 29, 2001 9:42:27 PM)
nope

Diane (ID=76) (May 29, 2001 9:42:40 PM)
That is rediculous

SheriCAL (ID=73) (May 29, 2001 9:42:40 PM)
we want one to bring the ratio down to 10-1

jbb (ID=77) (May 29, 2001 9:42:43 PM)
debbie- yes. phoneme awareness is so important. she will have phoneme training if I have anything to say about it.

SheriCAL (ID=73) (May 29, 2001 9:42:47 PM)
Yea, I know

Diane (ID=76) (May 29, 2001 9:42:57 PM)
That is the ratio here

SheriCAL (ID=73) (May 29, 2001 9:42:58 PM)
We are fighting hard

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:43:00 PM)
good for you jbb...good luck!!!

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 9:43:07 PM)
We used Earobics with Kara. That program really helped her.

Diane (ID=76) (May 29, 2001 9:43:21 PM)
Sherri my son uses Earobics

SheriCAL (ID=73) (May 29, 2001 9:43:23 PM)
We are using earobics now too, just started

Diane (ID=76) (May 29, 2001 9:43:41 PM)
He is 9.6 and it has really helped

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 9:43:43 PM)
We really saw improvement in decoding especially.

jbb (ID=77) (May 29, 2001 9:43:49 PM)
We will try Fast ForWord this summer.

SheriCAL (ID=73) (May 29, 2001 9:43:58 PM)
That is great to know about Earobics

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 9:43:59 PM)
What is Fast ForWord?

shari (ID=72) (May 29, 2001 9:44:01 PM)
If a child needs an aide or a one on one be sure to specify it in the IEP. Just remember there is a big difference between the two

jbb (ID=77) (May 29, 2001 9:44:05 PM)
I am also looking into the Earobics.

Diane (ID=76) (May 29, 2001 9:44:14 PM)
Sherri and Sheri how old are your children

shari (ID=72) (May 29, 2001 9:44:19 PM)
They can not use funds as a reason for denying it either

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 9:44:33 PM)
SheriCal you can order it online...Cognitive Concepts (I think www.cognitiveconcepts.com)

Diane (ID=76) (May 29, 2001 9:44:43 PM)
thats right

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 9:44:44 PM)
Kara is 7

SheriCAL (ID=73) (May 29, 2001 9:44:59 PM)
we left the IEP without signing because of the Aide issue. Oh, I do have earobics, we just started using it. Julia is 5

Diane (ID=76) (May 29, 2001 9:45:05 PM)
Jake started with it at 7.6

SheriCAL (ID=73) (May 29, 2001 9:45:15 PM)
We want a classroom aide not personal

Diane (ID=76) (May 29, 2001 9:45:25 PM)
The earlier the better with earobics

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:45:33 PM)
try www.earobics.com for a trial version of earobics

shari (ID=72) (May 29, 2001 9:45:36 PM)
They must give you PRior Written Notice for anything that they refuse. SheriCal

SheriCAL (ID=73) (May 29, 2001 9:45:51 PM)
Yes, they noted the disagreement in the Team summary

jbb (ID=77) (May 29, 2001 9:46:03 PM)
Did any of you read the National Reading Council Report?

debbie (ID=66) (May 29, 2001 9:46:04 PM)
or www.cogcon.com for the main website for cognitive concepts

Diane (ID=76) (May 29, 2001 9:46:22 PM)
SheriCAL you are just asking for a general ed aide ?

It is a specific form that they have to give you as to why it was refused and what they propose in place of it. Then they also must give you papers on how to file a due process and mediation

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 9:47:03 PM)

and so many parents that don't have a clue as to what to do to help their child

Diane (ID=76) (May 29, 2001 9:58:36 PM)
aaand they just fall through the cracks

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 9:58:40 PM)
Especially with an incorrect diagnosis

Diane (ID=76) (May 29, 2001 9:58:47 PM)
yep

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 9:59:12 PM)
I know many fall thru the cracks. I've been extremely luck to have a speech pathologist fight for my daughter in just that scenario.

Diane (ID=76) (May 29, 2001 9:59:22 PM)
I had to fight for my son's APD to be recognized

Diane (ID=76) (May 29, 2001 9:59:55 PM)
and his IEP next year will be a whole new ballgame

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 10:00:17 PM)
And even though she was right on the edge of testing in K and 1st, her problems are really becoming significant as she gets ready for 3rd grade. We can really see how the auditory problem is affecting her.

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 10:00:40 PM)
what grade will he be in ?

Diane (ID=76) (May 29, 2001 10:00:54 PM)
Sherri my son is going into 4th and 3rd is a really big difference

Diane (ID=76) (May 29, 2001 10:01:38 PM)
as far as audiological attention is concerned

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 10:01:48 PM)
I have two older children...I remember it too well. I know Kara isn't ready and she won't be in the reg. cirriculum next year.. she'll be in special ed.

Diane (ID=76) (May 29, 2001 10:01:57 PM)
more classrom lecture etc...

Marge (ID=78) (May 29, 2001 10:02:20 PM)
back

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 10:02:23 PM)
do you have a FM unit?

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 10:02:31 PM)
Sherri

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 10:02:45 PM)
Kara used it last year and part of this year.. we really didn't feel it helped her that much.

Diane (ID=76) (May 29, 2001 10:02:56 PM)
No but I am going to request one for next year we are going to have further testing done this summer

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 10:03:15 PM)
My son made tremendous strides with it

Diane (ID=76) (May 29, 2001 10:03:25 PM)
you don't ? I have heard both pro and con

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 10:03:30 PM)
Her teacher felt she was picking up too many other sounds. I do know many children have been successful with it.

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 10:03:33 PM)
Butwe had to fight the teachers to use it.

Marge (ID=78) (May 29, 2001 10:04:28 PM)
sherri: what type of FM was used, soundfield or personal FM? and does your daughter have problems with speech in background noise or competing speech? (FM is not a magic solution for all types of CAPD)

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 10:05:01 PM)
I understand there is another FM system and the audiologist said she'd have one sent over (Kara's IEP mtg. was this morning)

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 10:05:29 PM)
Personal FM and she has problems with both.

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 10:05:43 PM)
HOw old is she?

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 10:06:03 PM)
She has been improving, but not fast enough to meet the 3rd grade curriculum. She has tremendous trouble with auditory memory.

Marge (ID=78) (May 29, 2001 10:06:06 PM)
sherri: what type of headphones was she using with the FM? walkman type headphones?

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 10:06:08 PM)
7

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 10:06:28 PM)
yes, walkman and the teacher wore a cordless microphone

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 10:06:41 PM)
My son loved his because he was 5 and all the kids thought he got to wear a radio at school but my friend's son wouldn't hear of it and he was in 5th grade.

Marge (ID=78) (May 29, 2001 10:07:09 PM)
sherri: your daughter has had a thorough eval by an audiologist to rule out hearing loss?

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 10:07:23 PM)
I knew that our best bet was at this age. I have heard that as kids get older they really fight this type of intervention

Diane (ID=76) (May 29, 2001 10:07:31 PM)
(This user has left DigiChat) (IP = 172.154.169.8)

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 10:07:32 PM)
Yes, Kara has had a full batter of testing.

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 10:07:40 PM)
battery, that is

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 10:07:54 PM)
her hearing is 100%

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 10:08:19 PM)
does anyone here homeschool?

Marge (ID=78) (May 29, 2001 10:08:21 PM)
sherri: acoustic reflexes? otoacoustic emissions? tympanometry all ok?

Marge (ID=78) (May 29, 2001 10:08:37 PM)
lynne: not me. have used both public & private school.

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 10:08:53 PM)
background noise, even very light introduced really made her scores drop

Marge (ID=78) (May 29, 2001 10:09:38 PM)
sherri: have they ruled out auditory neuropathy?

Sherri (ID=63) (May 29, 2001 10:10:06 PM)
sorry, marge, kara got up for a min. - yes all of those things were tested.

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 10:10:09 PM)
oh. Here in VA they just passed a law that if your child is homeschooled or in a private school and have an sort of speech, language or other learning disability, they aren't allowed to receive services through the public schools

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 10:10:35 PM)
I mainly got on the warn other people of this potential problem occurring in other states.

Marge (ID=78) (May 29, 2001 10:10:36 PM)
lynne: has there been a big squawk about that??

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 10:11:00 PM)
They slid it in at the last minute and no one knew about it and they passed it.

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 10:11:23 PM)
many kids are being thrown out of the speech program because of this

Marge (ID=78) (May 29, 2001 10:11:39 PM)
lynne: what a rotten thing to do! i would imagine various parent organizations are going to protest?

Marge (ID=78) (May 29, 2001 10:12:12 PM)
wb sherri

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 10:12:21 PM)
My son and another woman in our group have been put out. My school tried to say that Greg has met his goals. I am soooo tired of the crap and Greg hates speech so bad that I am letting him be put out.

Sherri (ID=79) (May 29, 2001 10:12:23 PM)
thank you.

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 10:12:32 PM)
I am sure there will be protests.

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 10:12:45 PM)
It was very slimey how they did it.

Marge (ID=78) (May 29, 2001 10:12:46 PM)
lynne: either that, or exempt you from paying school taxes!

Marge (ID=78) (May 29, 2001 10:13:41 PM)
lynne: i am pretty sure Va will be in trouble with the federal govt over that, too. Federal law is what guarantees FAPE.

Marge (ID=78) (May 29, 2001 10:14:37 PM)
sherri: i would think that with the personal FM, even if it's not cutting out ALL the competing sounds, it just has to be better for your daughter than NO FM at all, given what you said about how her scores plummet with background noise.

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 10:14:52 PM)
but when you homeschool you sign a waiver and they aren't held responsible for your childs successes or failures.

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 10:15:16 PM)
I think the way you do Marge about the FM unit.

Marge (ID=78) (May 29, 2001 10:15:17 PM)
sherri: ask the audiologist about fitting her with more occlusive earphones. that might help.

Sherri (ID=79) (May 29, 2001 10:15:35 PM)
We are going to try a different FM system, but I'm not sure of what the difference is. But she has had a tremendous amount of support from her teachers int he classroom

Marge (ID=78) (May 29, 2001 10:15:48 PM)
sherri: great to know she's getting such support

Sherri (ID=79) (May 29, 2001 10:16:10 PM)
I do feel very lucky for that. It just seems as though we can't find the secret to helping her learn.

Sherri (ID=79) (May 29, 2001 10:16:53 PM)
I had no idea how much trouble other parents are having with the schools, etc.

Sherri (ID=79) (May 29, 2001 10:17:11 PM)
I wish I could help in some way.

Marge (ID=78) (May 29, 2001 10:18:26 PM)
sherri: who did her audiological eval, if i might ask?

Sherri (ID=79) (May 29, 2001 10:18:53 PM)
Carrie Taylor, an audiologist with the Wake County School System.

Marge (ID=78) (May 29, 2001 10:19:04 PM)
and she tested for auditory neuropathy??

Sherri (ID=79) (May 29, 2001 10:19:25 PM)
I don't know what that is?

Marge (ID=78) (May 29, 2001 10:20:57 PM)
it indicates that there is some sort of transmission problem with the nerve impulses leaving the cochlea and heading into the midbrain. kids with this disorder can test out with a normal audiogram, but might have extreme difficulty hearing in anything except perfectly quiet conditions with only one speaker.

Marge (ID=78) (May 29, 2001 10:21:44 PM)
there is a truly excellent ENT/audiologist I can tell you about at Duke university (I think it's Duke)

Sherri (ID=79) (May 29, 2001 10:21:56 PM)
Who is that?

Marge (ID=78) (May 29, 2001 10:22:18 PM)
Debara Tucci... she started out as an audiologist, then went to medical school to get her ENT

Sherri (ID=79) (May 29, 2001 10:22:49 PM)
I'll look her up.

Sherri (ID=79) (May 29, 2001 10:23:04 PM)
It wouldn't be far for me to go to Duke

Marge (ID=78) (May 29, 2001 10:23:32 PM)
it may be that the eval by the school system audiologist wasn't thorough enough to catch a subtle problem

Marge (ID=78) (May 29, 2001 10:23:58 PM)
give me a minute and i'll see what contact info i can locate for you

Marge (ID=78) (May 29, 2001 10:24:00 PM)
brb

Sherri (ID=79) (May 29, 2001 10:24:21 PM)
You may be right because with all the support she is getting, she just isn't making the strides we think she should.

Marge (ID=78) (May 29, 2001 10:28:20 PM)
back

Marge (ID=78) (May 29, 2001 10:28:41 PM)
ok, Debara Tucci *is* at Duke, she's an assoc prof of otolaryngology

lynne (ID=68) (May 29, 2001 10:28:45 PM)
welp, I need my beauty sleep. You all take care and have a good week. See you next week.
