Tammy (ID=20) (May 22, 2001 8:53:18 PM)

debbie (ID=19) (May 22, 2001 8:53:48 PM)

debbie (ID=19) (May 22, 2001 8:55:06 PM)
Can I go????? Pretty Please!!!!!!

Tammy (ID=20) (May 22, 2001 8:55:15 PM)
We went to see the occupational therapist last week...he now has a diagnosis of SI as well as everything else...but at least now it all makes sense.

deb (ID=21) (May 22, 2001 8:55:23 PM)
SURE!!!!!! Can you be ready by 7 AM tomorrow?

Tammy (ID=20) (May 22, 2001 8:55:41 PM)

debbie (ID=19) (May 22, 2001 8:55:47 PM)
I can be ready by 6!! *LOL*

debbie (ID=19) (May 22, 2001 8:56:02 PM)
HOw is school going for Travis?

deb (ID=21) (May 22, 2001 8:56:07 PM)
Tammy.....YIPPIE!! I'll tell you....you should see some help with the therapy....SI therapy is totally different than OT therapy/

deb (ID=21) (May 22, 2001 8:56:21 PM)
Debbie....you got it girlfriend!!

Tammy (ID=20) (May 22, 2001 8:57:28 PM)
We're still fighting with the insurance company about therapy but the OT says she will give us a list of things we can do at home to help. She's also getting a list together of things that she thinks will help him at school.

deb (ID=21) (May 22, 2001 8:57:37 PM)
school is out....and Travis did pretty darn good. Still had a C in Process writing,....imagine that...but maintained an A in spelling all year, and he got THREE awards at his awards ceremony!!!! HUGE boost for him, since Corey ALWAYS gets awards!

debbie (ID=19) (May 22, 2001 8:58:26 PM)
just a moment..house full of company just leaving now

Tammy (ID=20) (May 22, 2001 8:58:47 PM)
when did Travis get out of school?

deb (ID=21) (May 22, 2001 8:59:17 PM)
Tammy....Travis' SI therapist gave us a few things we can do with him while we are gone...depending on where CJ's difficulties lay, will depend on what she will have him do. They got out last Friday, the 18th!!

deb (ID=21) (May 22, 2001 9:00:38 PM)
Did Debbie have Kendra's b'day party tonight do you know?

Tammy (ID=20) (May 22, 2001 9:01:02 PM)
CJ and Cam don't get out until the 1st...none of us can wait!! She seems to think that most of CJ's problems are vestibular and proprioceptive with a little tactile thrown in for good measure but we're still waiting on the report for a final dx.

Tammy (ID=20) (May 22, 2001 9:01:17 PM)
I have no idea...

Tammy (ID=20) (May 22, 2001 9:01:53 PM)
Sorry I haven't returned your email...it's just been crazy around here lately.

deb (ID=21) (May 22, 2001 9:02:53 PM)
Ahhhhh....same as Travis....tactile as well too...with a little bit of the mouth stuff too. Don't worry about writing back....I TOTALLY can relate!!!I have over A MONTH for CAPD Digest's I haven't read yet!!!!

deb (ID=21) (May 22, 2001 9:04:04 PM)
And I'm going away tomorrow for two weeks....I can only imagine what my mail box ( e-mail ) will look like when I get back!

deb (ID=21) (May 22, 2001 9:04:46 PM)
Have you found the book The Out of Sync Child yet?

Tammy (ID=20) (May 22, 2001 9:04:48 PM)

debbie (ID=19) (May 22, 2001 9:06:29 PM)

deb (ID=21) (May 22, 2001 9:07:35 PM)
jb....my son used it for the last few months of school....I will be picking it up from school when we get back from vacation to use at home over the summer. So far, I think it has been good for him. I can;t wait to see what happens when we can really use it more intensley though here at home.

deb (ID=21) (May 22, 2001 9:07:57 PM)
debbie....was she surprised??!!

jb (ID=22) (May 22, 2001 9:08:15 PM)

deb (ID=21) (May 22, 2001 9:11:37 PM)
jb....Travis really seemed to enjoy doing it at school. Now, we will see how he likes it 5 days a week, at an hour per session! *L*....he may feel differently then!

deb (ID=21) (May 22, 2001 9:12:19 PM)
jb...Travis's audiologist reccommended he use it.

jb (ID=22) (May 22, 2001 9:12:20 PM)
My daughters SLP wants her to do the Fast ForWord program this summer, if she is able to. (she is 5). I just wanted to look into the Earobics, I have heard good things about it, too.

debbie (ID=19) (May 22, 2001 9:12:34 PM)
Deb, I called the school two more times today, the response I got was that the school had made a decision and they would send me a letter....When I asked to speak to the director of student services they said twice that he woudl return my call.....he never did

debbie (ID=19) (May 22, 2001 9:13:38 PM)
jb have you tried the demo of earobics on the web?

deb (ID=21) (May 22, 2001 9:13:53 PM)

Tammy (ID=20) (May 22, 2001 9:20:20 PM)

deb (ID=21) (May 22, 2001 9:26:47 PM)
Like debbie, I think I'm going to head out also...have to finish packing for vacation! jb....like Tammy said, it may take a while. But, you are the advocate, and it can get rough at times. But, that's when you turn to everyone here...a lot of us have been there, done that. I've been at this ballgame of APD for almost 5 years now....and I'm still learning.

Georgie (ID=26) (May 22, 2001 9:29:18 PM)
I have a 15 year old son, and I am just now wondering if CAPD is what we/he has been troubled with all these years. So we are just beginning. I am from Carlisle MA

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 9:29:41 PM)
Oh, Hi, I'm from Revere, MA We've spoken before, I think LOL

jbb (ID=27) (May 22, 2001 9:30:06 PM)
A regular teacher and a special educaton teacher in the class at the same time. My only concern is that there are at lest 4 special ed kids in the class. The special ed teacher is only going to be in the calss for 40min a day.

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 9:30:07 PM)
My daughter is 7 and we won't have the diagnosis until July but everyone that's tested her thinks it's CAPD

Georgie (ID=26) (May 22, 2001 9:30:15 PM)
Well, I just got your email tonight re: testing in Lexington

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 9:30:45 PM)
Yes. I'm a little nervous that we'll find she doesn't have APD and then will be back to square one.

Georgie (ID=26) (May 22, 2001 9:31:04 PM)
Answers are wonderful things, yes?

Tammy (ID=20) (May 22, 2001 9:31:17 PM)
the special ed teacher is teaching everyone in the class or just pulling the special needs students to a corner? how do they do that?

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 9:31:18 PM)
NO question about it, the school isn't being too bad, though

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 9:31:42 PM)
In jeopardy of losing our 504 if she doesn't have APD

Georgie (ID=26) (May 22, 2001 9:32:05 PM)
Is 504 like a half-way IEP?

Tammy (ID=20) (May 22, 2001 9:32:08 PM)
so your daughter has a 504, carol, not an iep?

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 9:32:19 PM)
Yes, she doesn't qualify for the iep

Dorien (ID=25) (May 22, 2001 9:32:21 PM)
Why are you in jeopardy

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 9:32:45 PM)
I've been told she needs to have a diagnosis to qualify for accommodations the 504 allows

jbb (ID=27) (May 22, 2001 9:33:08 PM)
The reg ed teacher teaches the calss, teh special ed teacher can help all the kids, but mostly the special ed kids. She will be in the class during language arts.

Dorien (ID=25) (May 22, 2001 9:33:20 PM)
that is true but this can be a good fight.

Tammy (ID=20) (May 22, 2001 9:33:23 PM)
doesn't that stink...they know she needs special services but refuse to provide it unless they have that piece of paper!!

Dorien (ID=25) (May 22, 2001 9:33:55 PM)
by fighting gives you more time to find out

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 9:33:56 PM)
NO, they say she doesn't need special services, they tell me she's very bright but lazy, it makes me nuts and her self esteem is plummeting

Georgie (ID=26) (May 22, 2001 9:34:12 PM)
Carol, how did she qualify before?

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 9:34:22 PM)
She's never qualified

Dorien (ID=25) (May 22, 2001 9:34:47 PM)
if you have a 504 now she must have

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 9:34:48 PM)
They agree she has problems and have given the 504 based on the presumption that it is CAPD

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 9:35:07 PM)
It only allows for room accomodations not curriculum

Tammy (ID=20) (May 22, 2001 9:35:15 PM)
they told us CJ was lazy too...but he works so much harder than the other kids just to try to keep up...

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 9:35:21 PM)
eg. timed speed tests she flunks but we can't get rid of them

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 9:35:30 PM)
Her too Tammy

Dorien (ID=25) (May 22, 2001 9:35:36 PM)
that is all Tricia gets along with FM unit

Tammy (ID=20) (May 22, 2001 9:35:56 PM)
the fm unit made a big difference for CJ...

Dorien (ID=25) (May 22, 2001 9:36:16 PM)
Tricia now gets A and B

Georgie (ID=26) (May 22, 2001 9:36:29 PM)
This is all so interesting. I have never heard of these fm units.

Tammy (ID=20) (May 22, 2001 9:36:34 PM)
he made leaps this year after getting the unit...he's even working on grade level work!

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 9:36:57 PM)
FM's are when the teacher has a microphone and the child wears ear phones?

Dorien (ID=25) (May 22, 2001 9:37:05 PM)
so is Tricia now our school may have to get one for my son

Tammy (ID=20) (May 22, 2001 9:37:15 PM)
right!

Georgie (ID=26) (May 22, 2001 9:37:20 PM)
Its

Georgie (ID=26) (May 22, 2001 9:37:26 PM)
oops

Tammy (ID=20) (May 22, 2001 9:37:41 PM)
the unit CJ had looked almost like a walkman...all the kids thought it was cool!!

Georgie (ID=26) (May 22, 2001 9:37:56 PM)
This is my first experience in a chat room.

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 9:37:57 PM)
That's good, so they don't make fun of him?

jbb (ID=27) (May 22, 2001 9:37:59 PM)
This collaborative kindergarten I looked at for my daguhter has speakers throughout the romm, the teacher has a micophone and the child wears nothing.

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 9:38:07 PM)
Glad to have you aboard, Georgie

Georgie (ID=26) (May 22, 2001 9:38:19 PM)
That's what I have seen. the room unit

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 9:38:23 PM)
jbb, that sounds better so no one is singled out

Tammy (ID=20) (May 22, 2001 9:38:47 PM)
Some of the kids do but that's usually due to his delayed motor skills rather than the fm unit...

Dorien (ID=25) (May 22, 2001 9:38:52 PM)
but does this pick up other sound

jbb (ID=27) (May 22, 2001 9:38:55 PM)
that is the idea. i have heard the teacher soen't always use the microphone though.

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 9:39:29 PM)
That's too bad, she has it and it works, why not use it!

jbb (ID=27) (May 22, 2001 9:39:38 PM)
I am told these systems are very easily installed and moved.

Georgie (ID=26) (May 22, 2001 9:39:55 PM)
Our fifth grade teacher used to have fun going down the hall and still talking to the kids. I imagine the novelty wore off pretty quickly tho

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 9:39:59 PM)
I have a feeling that would cause a controlled riot in my school

Tammy (ID=20) (May 22, 2001 9:40:14 PM)
with CJ's the teacher only used the fm unit during direct instruction at other times it was completely shut off. it does not pick up other channels--we worried about that too so my husband tested it!

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 9:40:19 PM)
So you have one for your son, Georgie

Georgie (ID=26) (May 22, 2001 9:41:06 PM)
No. It was a room unit a teacher got, that had nothing to do with my son

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 9:41:33 PM)
Oh, that's too bad, what makes you think he has had APD?

Tammy (ID=20) (May 22, 2001 9:43:00 PM)
sorry all, but i'm going to have to go...have to get everything ready for school/work tomorrow...good night all!

Chat gremlins, Dorien?

Dorien (ID=28) (May 22, 2001 9:43:51 PM)
yes they seem to get me a lot

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 9:43:57 PM)
usually me too

jbb (ID=27) (May 22, 2001 9:44:02 PM)
I am going to bed too, must be at work at 7am.

Georgie (ID=26) (May 22, 2001 9:44:03 PM)
Oh my gosh. So many things that I have read on this site over the last few days. I used a search engine, typed in Language Disability and started to read. Evan has always had extreme difficulty verbalizing responses, sometime to the most simple questions.

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 9:44:09 PM)
good night jbb

good night

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 9:44:46 PM)
Did you ever feel when he was younger that he might have hearing problems?

Georgie (ID=26) (May 22, 2001 9:45:02 PM)
Never.

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 9:45:30 PM)
Did you have him tested in school?

Dorien (ID=28) (May 22, 2001 9:45:32 PM)
I have to say that I might not have had my son tested if I did not find this

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 9:45:58 PM)
What did your testing show, Dorien?

Georgie (ID=26) (May 22, 2001 9:46:04 PM)
He always responded to noise, but there has always been such a delay in speaking.

Dorien (ID=28) (May 22, 2001 9:46:17 PM)
he is showing CAPD

Georgie (ID=26) (May 22, 2001 9:46:27 PM)
By this do you mean this web site?

Dorien (ID=28) (May 22, 2001 9:46:30 PM)
Now I have two with this

Dorien (ID=28) (May 22, 2001 9:46:41 PM)
Yes I do

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 9:46:54 PM)
Have there been complaints from teachers that he's lazy or not paying attention, day dreams?

Georgie (ID=26) (May 22, 2001 9:46:58 PM)
I am amazed at how strong the hereditary aspect of this is

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 9:47:13 PM)
Me too, Georgie on her father's side.

Dorien (ID=28) (May 22, 2001 9:47:21 PM)
No but I saw that he does not get it

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 9:47:37 PM)
Dorien, I think I might have to have my 6 year old tested. I question whether she's lazy or APD every day

Dorien (ID=28) (May 22, 2001 9:48:08 PM)
I would have the 6 year old tested this way you know

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 9:48:14 PM)
Yeah, that's what makes Krystie most frustrated, when she doesn't get it and knows she should

Dorien (ID=28) (May 22, 2001 9:48:32 PM)
Tricia too

Dorien (ID=28) (May 22, 2001 9:48:44 PM)
I can stop this for Mike

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 9:48:44 PM)
I need referrals and can't get them because my pediatrician doesn't see in her what he saw in Krystina

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 9:49:06 PM)
Stop it how, Dorien?

Georgie (ID=26) (May 22, 2001 9:49:16 PM)
No. Because his nature does not express itself that way at all. It was always seen as a great struggle, or perhaps a problem with perfectionism. I have spent years guessing. Are these things he can't do or won't. But never a matter of lazy.. I have spent years learning about giftedness, because that has been our primary focus all along.

Dorien (ID=28) (May 22, 2001 9:49:23 PM)
I just told mine. I then stated that he has had problems

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 9:50:03 PM)
My God, Krystina too with giftedness. I hate it when they tell me she's gifted because she's so upset with herself for not "getting things".

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 9:50:53 PM)
That's why the teacher is so hard on her. She rarely spells words wrong on tests but points are taken off daily for her handwriting.

Dorien (ID=28) (May 22, 2001 9:50:56 PM)
I was told that Tricia could learn at her own speed but I knew she could get it as fast as any other child

Georgie (ID=26) (May 22, 2001 9:52:18 PM)
Hmm. Evan never seemed upset at anything other than the "stupid work". As he got older he expressed it differently, but

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 9:52:47 PM)
She has fits over the stupid work.

Dorien (ID=28) (May 22, 2001 9:53:10 PM)
Tricia would cry because she could not do the work

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 9:53:51 PM)
We spent years crying over things like that, I started doing the "stupid work" for her this year

Dorien (ID=28) (May 22, 2001 9:54:20 PM)
I would sit with her until I could not stay up

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 9:54:43 PM)
Hours, here too. Coloring in Kindergarten and first grade was like pulling teeth better this year

Georgie (ID=26) (May 22, 2001 9:55:21 PM)
He was always seen as such a puzzle to anyone who paid any attention. for years teachers would overlook the work left undone by saying he'll be fine, he's so smart. I wonder if doing the stupid work is a good idea.

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 9:55:25 PM)
Now the fuss is writing spelling words and counting

Dorien (ID=28) (May 22, 2001 9:55:55 PM)
Now I have Tricia has to do her work in the kitchen with out the TV on and with a little help she can get it done

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 9:56:44 PM)
I don't think it is Georgie because it causes so much stress for these kids to do what they have to. She's ok with the math the reading writing etc then spelling words, the easy stuff to me, she has fits. I learned how to copy her writing and do it now myself

Dorien (ID=28) (May 22, 2001 9:57:37 PM)
have you thought to let het try the PC

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 9:57:55 PM)
She loves the PC Dorien, but not allowed in school until next year

Georgie (ID=26) (May 22, 2001 9:58:08 PM)
Spelling work is nortorious for causing great trouble for bright kids. It is their first blatent reaction to inappropriate expectation. I knew a kid who got 100 throughout 3rd then got 20's and 40's, and the kid was tested as extremely smart. His father was really angry with him, and I tried to explain it wasn't the kids fault. I think I helped.

Dorien (ID=28) (May 22, 2001 9:58:12 PM)
that is to bad

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 9:58:46 PM)
The teacher admits she doesn't need to study the words but needs to improve her handwriting. She doesn't see the handwriting gets worse as the day goes on.

Dorien (ID=28) (May 22, 2001 9:59:29 PM)
has the school tried OT or PT

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 9:59:32 PM)
That kids sounds like he was taught the way he needed to be, Georgie

Georgie (ID=26) (May 22, 2001 9:59:53 PM)
School is so stressful. especially for kids who don't fit. What do you mean?

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 10:00:15 PM)
That's the saddest part, Dorien, they tell me she'll mature. Even though she just learned how to tie her shoes and dress herself and ride a 2 wheeler.

Dorien (ID=28) (May 22, 2001 10:00:38 PM)
how old is she

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 10:00:47 PM)
The 3 types of learning are auditory, visual and kinetic or something like that

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 10:00:49 PM)
7

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 10:01:12 PM)
If you teach a CAPD kid using only auditory methods, he/she will fail

Dorien (ID=28) (May 22, 2001 10:01:24 PM)
Tricia did not learn to tie until last year and she is 10

Dorien (ID=28) (May 22, 2001 10:01:58 PM)
As for thewritting see if you can find a grip

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 10:02:00 PM)
Yes, I'm told 7 is young for a kid with CAPD and that was said by someone at the school and they are telling me she doesn't have CAPD but is lazy

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 10:02:12 PM)
What's a grip?

Dorien (ID=28) (May 22, 2001 10:02:41 PM)
I would tell them to go to ...

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 10:02:43 PM)
That's my saying around my house, "I need to get a grip"

Dorien (ID=28) (May 22, 2001 10:02:52 PM)
me too

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 10:03:01 PM)
I've come this----close Dorien

Dorien (ID=28) (May 22, 2001 10:03:16 PM)
the grip can help with hand writting

Georgie (ID=26) (May 22, 2001 10:03:26 PM)
I can't imagine thinking a seven year old lazy. A grip would be a soft cushion that slips over the pencil.

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 10:04:02 PM)
Oh, a regular pencil with something to grip it better! Sounds like something I should try for her.

Dorien (ID=28) (May 22, 2001 10:04:47 PM)
(This user has left DigiChat) (IP = 216.179.1.180)

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 10:05:00 PM)
Georgie, they say this because she use to spend a lot of time looking out the window or door. Then the 504 went into effect and the teacher noticed a big improvement

Dorien (ID=29) (May 22, 2001 10:05:02 PM)
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart) (IP = 216.179.1.177)

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 10:05:11 PM)
gremlins!

Dorien (ID=29) (May 22, 2001 10:05:19 PM)
this getting to me

Georgie (ID=26) (May 22, 2001 10:05:30 PM)
IWhat did they do for her as the 504?

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 10:06:42 PM)
Moved her to the front of the room on the side away from the window. Lets her hold a squeeze ball so she's not pulling on her clothing, lets her chew a straw if she's seen chewing her clothing (hasn't needed to yet) Has to be redirected by the teacher and uses a buddy in class for homework and page numbers etc

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 10:07:27 PM)
I wanted to include no timed tests and to be more lenient about the handwriting but no can do!

Dorien (ID=29) (May 22, 2001 10:07:43 PM)
I went through a lot of that for about 5 years for Tricia but now the school does not play as much with me. I just found that our school is getting a new princpal next year and my friend ask what I will do . I tell them fresh meat

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 10:08:01 PM)
Fresh meat, sounds good!

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 10:08:03 PM)
LOL

Dorien (ID=29) (May 22, 2001 10:08:18 PM)
Tell me about it

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 10:08:32 PM)
My principal has a son in college with CAPd

Georgie (ID=26) (May 22, 2001 10:08:47 PM)
Wow. I am glad this is helping. It sounds good. Evan's worst year was 3rd when the teacher refused to allow any change in the work he did because it was way below him. No accommodation! Evan ended the year a real wreck, chewing on anything he could put in his mouth. I will never forget it.

Dorien (ID=29) (May 22, 2001 10:08:48 PM)
I have fun playing with our schools.

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 10:08:59 PM)
He's helpful to an extent but does insist my daughter will be my mission for years to come

Dorien (ID=29) (May 22, 2001 10:09:29 PM)
That is the only way it will work

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 10:09:33 PM)
That was last year Georgie thank God it stopped. Holes through every shirt sleeve

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 10:09:51 PM)
I can't call it fun.

Dorien (ID=29) (May 22, 2001 10:10:04 PM)
I pick teachers and tell the school who will or will not work with Tricia

Dorien (ID=29) (May 22, 2001 10:10:34 PM)
They call and ask me if things are ok

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 10:10:40 PM)
Although, I met with her next year teacher. I already know because the principal lets me decide who will be best for her, except this year. Next year should be a good one

Georgie (ID=26) (May 22, 2001 10:10:53 PM)
His next year's teacher had a very loose environment. I can't call it very positive, but at least there was some compassion and more lasse faire.

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 10:11:36 PM)
What do you mean, Georgie, no routine or structure. Krystie wouldn't know what to do. But she's younger, maybe when she gets older?

Dorien (ID=29) (May 22, 2001 10:12:02 PM)
Tricia needs a teacher that understands but can not be wraped around her finger

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 10:12:22 PM)
I agree Dorien

Dorien (ID=29) (May 22, 2001 10:12:48 PM)
For the first two years she go away with everything

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 10:12:50 PM)
I want a teacher that not only understands but seems and is interested in what CAPD is and how best to teach someone with it

Georgie (ID=26) (May 22, 2001 10:13:07 PM)
Yes, very little structure. He would try to come up with ideas for Evan on extra work that might interest him, but that is a poor way to offer gifted ed. Evan wasn't having any of it. He was happy enough being left alone-ish.

Dorien (ID=29) (May 22, 2001 10:13:24 PM)
I provide the teachers with as much information on CAPD

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 10:13:25 PM)
Sounds like it could be a problem.

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 10:14:24 PM)
I did too, this year and for the next year teacher I did last week. I presented this years' teacher with the paper work in October. At my meeting in April, she asked "What is CAPD, again" I wanted to kill her

Georgie (ID=26) (May 22, 2001 10:14:41 PM)
He has found a way to manage through the years, I think isolation is a tool he uses. We are working on this.

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 10:15:12 PM)
See most APD kids don't have friends. Krystie is quiet but sociable.

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 10:15:37 PM)
There are areas she most definitely has CAPD then other things pop up that don't fit her at all.

Tell me about it. I went back a few times to one teacher and I then asked the principal if I had to teach the teacher

Georgie (ID=26) (May 22, 2001 10:15:49 PM)
And perhaps his delay and trouble with language are part of the problem.

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 10:16:12 PM)
Was he tested Georgie?

Dorien (ID=29) (May 22, 2001 10:17:06 PM)
Georgie it took 5 years to get a name so we could get Tricia tested and another 3 mo to find someone to do the test

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 10:17:24 PM)

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 10:17:43 PM)

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 10:18:12 PM)
I'm sick of waiting months, I want to see someone tomorrow. "How does it feel to want" I guess

Georgie (ID=26) (May 22, 2001 10:18:25 PM)
We lived in Michigan, small town, quite isolated. Always asked for testing, but I bet even if they had given it, they wouldn't have had a clue. I did have the elementary counselor meet with him. The guy bothered twice. "He's fine" they always say.

Dorien (ID=29) (May 22, 2001 10:18:43 PM)
It took me 8 mo to get someone to test him as they do not like to test until the children are 7 or 8

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 10:18:53 PM)
Me too Georgie but the SLP thought she had auditory issues

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 10:19:47 PM)
There are different thought on the age thing Dorien, I think Dr. J tests at 3 and 4 years old

Dorien (ID=29) (May 22, 2001 10:20:09 PM)

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 10:20:19 PM)

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 10:20:37 PM)
He's in Washington DC I think.

Dorien (ID=29) (May 22, 2001 10:20:41 PM)

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 10:21:01 PM)

Georgie (ID=26) (May 22, 2001 10:21:30 PM)
We moved here last April and last fall he was given a battery of tests at the Institute for learning and Developement in Lex. Intelligence and learning profile. Some very specific low areas in language. He is getting tutoring now, but more focused on school work instead of language. I mentioned possibiity of APD last week and they were cool to it.

Dorien (ID=29) (May 22, 2001 10:21:38 PM)
but I talked with the women who tested Tricia and she agreed. I live in Monticello

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 10:22:05 PM)

Georgie (ID=26) (May 22, 2001 10:23:19 PM)
Why does that reveal in some way APD?

Dorien (ID=29) (May 22, 2001 10:23:28 PM)
Good night I have to get up at 4:30

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 10:23:33 PM)
I'm told picture arrangement and coding or block design would be low in APd

Carol (ID=24) (May 22, 2001 10:23:36 PM)

Georgie (ID=26) (May 22, 2001 10:23:39 PM)
