Julies Mom (ID=186) (May 15, 2001 8:22:15 PM)

debbie (ID=184) (May 15, 2001 8:22:20 PM)

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 8:23:55 PM)
Ok, thanks

Julies Mom (ID=186) (May 15, 2001 8:24:23 PM)
Hi Carol

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 8:24:34 PM)
Hello again, Julies Mom

debbie (ID=184) (May 15, 2001 8:24:35 PM)
what was the final result?

Julies Mom (ID=186) (May 15, 2001 8:25:55 PM)
Well... it was just an informal meeting... will be have IEP meeting soon..... But I made it clear that I didn't want them to just let her slide through that I would like to see them try to bring her up to grade average.

debbie (ID=184) (May 15, 2001 8:27:03 PM)
and what was their response?

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 8:27:12 PM)
Debbie, I met with Krystie's next year's teacher. I brought papers with me about CAPD and one was the 6 catagories. She was wondering what category affects processing from paper, like in a speed test. She doesn't believe in speed tests, which is good.

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 8:30:31 PM)

Debbie, I want to do Fast Forword with Jonathan, but I'm scared of the cost and it not working... Have you only heard good about it? I know you and Sarah did it. Would you do it again?

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 8:32:16 PM)
Julies mom, as far as I know, every time a new test is done, the section 504 can be altered, I don't have an IEP so dont' know about it but think it should be modified with new testing

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 8:32:21 PM)
Hi geri

Julies Mom (ID=186) (May 15, 2001 8:32:26 PM)
According to regulations I can't change the iprc for 3 months afterwards...

hi

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 8:32:56 PM)
So once you sign the IEP, it's possible it stays that way for 3 months?

Julies Mom (ID=186) (May 15, 2001 8:33:02 PM)
Hi geri

Julies Mom (ID=186) (May 15, 2001 8:33:30 PM)

My daughter doesn't test until July

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 8:35:07 PM)
But all the slp's (3) and psychologists (3) agree it is APD

Peggy (ID=189) (May 15, 2001 8:35:31 PM)

Julies Mom (ID=186) (May 15, 2001 8:35:50 PM)

my daughter has CAPD and I've just bought the Earobics program. They've been using it in school. We've recently moved and I'm very happy with the school district. We did Fast Forward 2 years ago. I think it helped but it was very expensive

hi..im back! Welcome to everyone who's joined in the chat

Peggy (ID=189) (May 15, 2001 8:45:37 PM)
Hi Debbie.

geri (ID=190) (May 15, 2001 8:45:49 PM)
what is theEarobics program NJ

nj (ID=191) (May 15, 2001 8:45:53 PM)
It was but I wish I could have used it a lot longer than I did. Maybe the benefits would have been better. I think consistency helps alot.

debbie (ID=184) (May 15, 2001 8:45:54 PM)
hi Peggy. I dont have any regrets of doing FFW at all

joannemm99 (ID=192) (May 15, 2001 8:45:54 PM)
hoe old are your children? my son is now 14

Peggy (ID=189) (May 15, 2001 8:46:08 PM)
Thank you Debbie!!! :)

Peggy (ID=189) (May 15, 2001 8:46:26 PM)
I'm just getting scared at this point. The cost and commitment are a lot!!!

Peggy (ID=189) (May 15, 2001 8:46:49 PM)
I just hope it will help! Its a lot of money and time to invest.

debbie (ID=184) (May 15, 2001 8:47:21 PM)
It is a big committment and can be very demanding Peggy..but with Sarah we did see improvement. We also started using the FM at the same time, so I can not say it was due to one or the other....I think it was the combination

Peggy (ID=189) (May 15, 2001 8:47:37 PM)
I want to help him and I want him to have a fun summer!!! Not work all summer long.

nj (ID=191) (May 15, 2001 8:48:06 PM)
I think it would have helped if the insurance would have paid for some of the program. Don't get me wrong, I think the sacrifice was well worth it but my daughter used it over the summer and I think if we would have been using it right along it would have been much more beneficial.

Peggy (ID=189) (May 15, 2001 8:48:07 PM)
I wish there was some kind of gaurentee!!!

debbie (ID=184) (May 15, 2001 8:49:01 PM)
Peggy..ask the SLP you are working with WHY she thinks it would benefit your child

Peggy (ID=189) (May 15, 2001 8:49:47 PM)
I don't think I could do it any other time but summer. School/homework take up enough time. I will ask that of her Debbie! Thanks!

debbie (ID=184) (May 15, 2001 8:50:16 PM)
I did FFW during the school yer in the middle of soccer season..it was nuts! I would do it over summer!

Peggy (ID=189) (May 15, 2001 8:50:33 PM)
It stinks that some school districts in the area have FF, mine doesn't.

joannemm99 (ID=192) (May 15, 2001 8:51:11 PM)
hwen my son was diagnosed, my school district never heard of CAPD

Peggy (ID=189) (May 15, 2001 8:51:29 PM)
The SLP said we will probably do 8 weeks.

joannemm99 (ID=192) (May 15, 2001 8:51:35 PM)
My son was the first in the elementary and the first in the high school

debbie (ID=184) (May 15, 2001 8:51:45 PM)
8 weeks in the standard amount and "goal"

joannemm99 (ID=192) (May 15, 2001 8:52:08 PM)
They never mentioned ff even now

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 8:52:26 PM)
What age kids use FF?

debbie (ID=184) (May 15, 2001 8:52:32 PM)
My school does not use FFW at all either

Peggy (ID=189) (May 15, 2001 8:53:00 PM)
I am probably going to just do it. I am just getting nervous about the cost and time commitment. It is something I have to try to help him though I guess. If I didn't try it, I would probably regret it later...

Peggy (ID=189) (May 15, 2001 8:57:01 PM)
Martha, we are talking about FFW Fast ForWord.

martha (ID=194) (May 15, 2001 8:57:45 PM)
oh, how well does it work?

jb (ID=196) (May 15, 2001 8:58:00 PM)
my daughter's slp wants her to have the Fast ForWord program this summer, so i am interested on thoughts on this program

jb (ID=196) (May 15, 2001 8:58:44 PM)
any one have any experience with Fast ForWord on a child as young as 5?

debbie (ID=184) (May 15, 2001 8:59:18 PM)
we used it for about 8 weeks

Peggy (ID=189) (May 15, 2001 8:59:42 PM)
My son is 8 and we are going to try it this summer. I'm a little afraid of the cost and commitment. I'm going to talk with the SLP again.

jb (ID=196) (May 15, 2001 8:59:45 PM)
did it help?

martha (ID=194) (May 15, 2001 9:00:00 PM)
I read about fast forword but I have not talked with anyone that used it.

joannemm99 (ID=192) (May 15, 2001 9:00:28 PM)
i have a question. would the school district give you a copy of it . are they books , tapes computer disks.or the special education unit in your district may be of some help

debbie (ID=184) (May 15, 2001 9:00:41 PM)
yes it did..but as i said a bit ago...we did FFW at the same time that we started using the FM unit

Oh. Everything i have read about FF is mixed reviews. I am a little hesitant at times for my daughter to do it. She is only 5. But then I read something about how beneficial it can be, it is hard to decide.

FF slows down the sounds in word. Phoneme processing,

Peggy (ID=189) (May 15, 2001 9:02:52 PM)
I agree jb...

joannemm99 (ID=192) (May 15, 2001 9:03:10 PM)
is it a machine

jb (ID=196) (May 15, 2001 9:03:23 PM)
phoneme processing is the BIG thing in reading, a very important skill.

martha (ID=194) (May 15, 2001 9:03:38 PM)
Can it help a child at 11?

jb (ID=196) (May 15, 2001 9:04:10 PM)
they say the program is for 4-12 yr olds.

Peggy (ID=189) (May 15, 2001 9:04:37 PM)
They have a program for mid/high school and adults too.

jb (ID=196) (May 15, 2001 9:04:54 PM)
I have had trouble locating information on independant studies, which you would like to see done.

martha (ID=194) (May 15, 2001 9:05:09 PM)
it is so hard to know which path to take. yes

jb (ID=196) (May 15, 2001 9:06:36 PM)
I want my daughter to have phomene training, i believe her testing will show that she needs that. FF does phoneme training, that is why I lean towards trying it when my daughter is ready.

martha, i believe it was you i spoke to 2 wks ago, about my daughter having the SCAN test?

jb (ID=196) (May 15, 2001 9:08:35 PM)
She is 5, I wasn't sure which test they did. Do you remember? it was the SCAN test that the slp did. She did extemely poor on this.

martha (ID=194) (May 15, 2001 9:09:06 PM)
maybe-f

I am interested in asking again if anyone's child has had problems with word finding? That is my daughters biggest problem so far. Anyone?

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:11:36 PM)
Sorry jb, that isn't one of Krystie's problems

martha (ID=194) (May 15, 2001 9:12:17 PM)
what do you mean by word finding?

jb (ID=196) (May 15, 2001 9:12:35 PM)
I have not come across anyone else who has said that their child with APD has this problem.

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:12:53 PM)
This is when she can't find a word to use when speaking, right?:

jb (ID=196) (May 15, 2001 9:13:06 PM)
She cannot say the word for something she knows, like her age. She hold up 5 finger.

jb (ID=196) (May 15, 2001 9:13:16 PM)
yup

martha (ID=194) (May 15, 2001 9:13:56 PM)
I am just learning about Capd. No Haley never had that problem.

jb (ID=196) (May 15, 2001 9:14:08 PM)
i know it has something to do with APD, It is her biggest problem.

jb (ID=196) (May 15, 2001 9:15:07 PM)
How old are your kids with APD? I once read that it is the most concering symptom in preschoolers.

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:15:50 PM)
Krystie, suspected of having APD is 7 but my 6 year old still does it and always did it that I can remember. I've been told it's normal for her age.

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:16:32 PM)
Really don't want to consider that my youngest might need to be tested. Having all kinds of problems with her with words and letters that I never had with Krystie.

Hi jbb :)

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:23:50 PM)
Once you join, anything that is written through the ListServ gets sent to you so you could get many e-mails in one day

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:24:23 PM)
Also, any question that you have gets many responses which I find great

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:24:35 PM)
You're very welcome

jbb (ID=197) (May 15, 2001 9:24:41 PM)
sounds good

Diane (ID=198) (May 15, 2001 9:24:58 PM)
Does anyone have homework modifications for their child in their IEP or 504?

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:25:23 PM)
I plan on getting it for next year, as this year was a disaster

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:25:34 PM)
I only get the 504

Diane (ID=198) (May 15, 2001 9:25:49 PM)
homework took us 21/2 hours tonight :(

jbb (ID=197) (May 15, 2001 9:25:58 PM)
my daughter is in preschool, she will start kindergarten in the fall. She is currently being evaluated by the CST.

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:26:10 PM)
I feel for you, Diane, ours was a little over an hour tonight

jbb (ID=197) (May 15, 2001 9:26:19 PM)
yikes

Diane (ID=198) (May 15, 2001 9:26:21 PM)
he's in 3rd grade for crying out loud :(

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:26:37 PM)
I've started doing some of it for her now. 2nd grade here

jbb (ID=197) (May 15, 2001 9:26:37 PM)
that is ridiculous

martha (ID=194) (May 15, 2001 9:26:49 PM)
that is way too much

Diane (ID=198) (May 15, 2001 9:27:00 PM)
I have to walk him through 99%

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:27:08 PM)
I don't think it's too much for the normal processing kid but for mine it goes on forever

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:27:16 PM)
Me too Diane

Diane (ID=198) (May 15, 2001 9:27:18 PM)
just to prevent meltdown

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:27:37 PM)
yup and that's why I've taken over on the multiple choice or map things.

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:27:51 PM)
I know she knows it and that's the only time I will step in

Diane (ID=198) (May 15, 2001 9:27:55 PM)
Carol so do i

jbb (ID=197) (May 15, 2001 9:28:14 PM)
that is too much stressfor a kid, to have to sit that long AFTER school when he should be out playing, being a kid

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:28:15 PM)
She's not like the other kids and I don't think should be treated like them

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:28:51 PM)
I agree but also think of all the effort he and she have to expend to complete their daily assignments in school then again after school?

martha (ID=194) (May 15, 2001 9:28:52 PM)
it all depends on the teacher

Diane (ID=198) (May 15, 2001 9:29:00 PM)
same with Jake, jbb it's even harder with it being light out at 8:30 -9:00

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:29:14 PM)
That's true Martha, but they base it on the general population of kids

Diane (ID=198) (May 15, 2001 9:29:26 PM)
He has so much written spelling

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:29:41 PM)
10 word 4 times each, her

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:29:43 PM)
here

Diane (ID=198) (May 15, 2001 9:29:51 PM)
15 4x

jbb (ID=197) (May 15, 2001 9:29:57 PM)
they should absolutely have modifications.

Diane (ID=198) (May 15, 2001 9:30:29 PM)
It's at the top of my list for next years IEP

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:30:48 PM)
Worse still is she doesn't get any spelled wrong on tests but the teacher has been marking words wrong because she erases or capitalizes or just doesn't write neat. It breaks my heart that it hurts her so much

jbb (ID=197) (May 15, 2001 9:31:28 PM)
i once read that you wouldn't ask a child you was blind to read from the blackboard like the rest of the kids, so shy would you ask a kid with LD to do the same as kids without LD?

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:31:50 PM)
I can't get any curriculum modifications until we get the APD diagnosis and they've let me know that I'm lucky to have the room accomodations based on the slp recommendations.

Diane (ID=198) (May 15, 2001 9:31:51 PM)
Carol Jake really struggles with writing we can go through spelling words twice verballly and he has 99% right

jbb (ID=197) (May 15, 2001 9:31:57 PM)
can you talk to that teacher Carol?

martha (ID=194) (May 15, 2001 9:31:57 PM)
So many teachers don't want to do the modifications since it takes up too much of their time

jbb (ID=197) (May 15, 2001 9:32:27 PM)
IS your daughter classified?

Diane (ID=198) (May 15, 2001 9:32:48 PM)
Thanks to this chat and the listserv next years IEP is gonna be real different

martha (ID=194) (May 15, 2001 9:33:08 PM)
same here-Haley can do well with me and then miss them.

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:33:09 PM)
I ha ve been told that I should be thankful she carries the A average in spelling and that her marking these things wrong will teach Krystie to change that behavior. I told her I was just watching out for her mental health. NOthing got accomplished

Diane (ID=198) (May 15, 2001 9:33:16 PM)
my son is jbb he is dyslexic as well as APD

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:33:38 PM)
What does classified mean?

Diane (ID=198) (May 15, 2001 9:34:09 PM)
to have an IEP they have to be classified

Diane (ID=198) (May 15, 2001 9:34:37 PM)
I think thats right

martha (ID=194) (May 15, 2001 9:34:53 PM)
She does find but the last spelling tests have been words that sound alike and she did horrible.

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:34:55 PM)
No, as it stands now, all tests were above average so she doesn't qualify for the IEP and all the tests also show weakness in audiological areas so point to APD

jbb (ID=197) (May 15, 2001 9:35:01 PM)
When the cst evaluates them, if the child qualifies for special education they have to classify them into a category. My daughter is "preschool handicapped"

Diane (ID=198) (May 15, 2001 9:35:15 PM)
Jakes classification is "other LD"

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:35:34 PM)
They don't even classify her as LD

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:36:15 PM)
Her grades are very good and only slide when the speed tests are introduced. But I know this teacher spends a lot of time attracting her attention and keeping it.

Diane (ID=198) (May 15, 2001 9:36:45 PM)
speed tests are a nightmare here he just freezes

jbb (ID=197) (May 15, 2001 9:37:05 PM)
that is the probelm, I read something about how you can get the special ed help when your child has APD but doesn't meet the criteria to be classified

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:37:13 PM)
I've been told that she is an average student with learning disabilities and would be gifted without LD's. The SLP at the school said this then I read the I think in pictures paper and it did fit her.

martha (ID=194) (May 15, 2001 9:37:20 PM)
same here Carol-her test showed a mild capd and she does well in class

jbb (ID=197) (May 15, 2001 9:37:44 PM)
that is garbage, carol

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:38:13 PM)
She freezes too Diane, 14/36 etc. I agree jbb, but couldn't get the appt. with the audiologist for testing until July so have to wait

jbb (ID=197) (May 15, 2001 9:38:38 PM)
You can be very gifted and still have LD. It is about each shild reaching their POTENTIAL. Your child is not reaching hers because of LD.

Diane (ID=198) (May 15, 2001 9:38:44 PM)
Carol our appt for officiail dx is in July also

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:38:44 PM)
I tried to make this appointment in January and took July thinking I'd get a cancellation

My Jake is definately a visual-spatial thinker

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:39:40 PM)
I don't really think she's gifted. That is genius, right? I don't think that but I do think she is bright and not getting out of school what she could

debbie (ID=184) (May 15, 2001 9:41:09 PM)
Sorry for missing most of the chat..I've been on the phone with a mom that contacted me about APD

Diane (ID=198) (May 15, 2001 9:41:19 PM)
Oh Hi debbie :)

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:41:25 PM)
You should set up an office, debbie

jbjb (ID=199) (May 15, 2001 9:41:26 PM)
you have to have an average or above average IQ and have deviations. Einstein was dyslexic, Thomas Edison,..I

Diane (ID=198) (May 15, 2001 9:41:29 PM)
I just asked about you :)

debbie (ID=184) (May 15, 2001 9:41:33 PM)
Was trying to help her get in the chat and we started talking about her son

debbie (ID=184) (May 15, 2001 9:41:40 PM)
hi saw that Diane! how have you been"

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:41:51 PM)
Oh God, thank God she's in bed and not hearing about LD's in Einstein and Edison

Diane (ID=198) (May 15, 2001 9:42:01 PM)
Good thanks and you ?

jbjb (ID=199) (May 15, 2001 9:42:11 PM)
why?

debbie (ID=184) (May 15, 2001 9:42:24 PM)
doing pretty good...(hanging in at least)

Diane (ID=198) (May 15, 2001 9:42:25 PM)
Carol that has been a real motivator for jake

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:42:28 PM)
She's quite a character and would be talking about being the next Einstein

Hi Kim

Diane (ID=198) (May 15, 2001 9:43:12 PM)
LOL Carol Jake always does any biography reports on famous people that have LD's

Kim (ID=200) (May 15, 2001 9:43:17 PM)
Hi again. Had to get the kids to bed.

Diane (ID=198) (May 15, 2001 9:43:30 PM)
Hi Kim

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:43:41 PM)
She still talks about being a special needs teacher or doctor to deal with kids like her. That is something to think about too, motivational. I might just mention it to her.

Kim (ID=200) (May 15, 2001 9:43:45 PM)
Hi! What are you talking about?

blab (ID=201) (May 15, 2001 9:43:55 PM)
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart) (IP = 12.87.146.166)

blab, how are you?

debbie (ID=184) (May 15, 2001 9:44:14 PM)
hey blab, hi Kim

Diane (ID=198) (May 15, 2001 9:44:15 PM)
Do Carol It really helped me explain to Jake about his learning diffs

blab (ID=201) (May 15, 2001 9:44:23 PM)
Pretty good Hectic week and it is only tues

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:44:25 PM)
Right now talking about LD's in famous people like Einstein and Edison

Diane (ID=198) (May 15, 2001 9:44:27 PM)
Hi blab

Kim (ID=200) (May 15, 2001 9:44:39 PM)
Ah....the geniuses

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:44:45 PM)
Tuesday's are generally very busy for me anyway

Diane (ID=198) (May 15, 2001 9:45:08 PM)
I will bo so glad when school is out so we can breathe

jbjb (ID=199) (May 15, 2001 9:45:15 PM)
I read about a Mom whose child did his homework in a different way. She kept telling the school to test him, they said no because he "did well" with A's and B's. SHe finally got a teacher to listen when her son was in like 6th grade. He tested genius but with LD. they made modidifcations and he REALLY worked to his potential then and excelled.

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:45:17 PM)
Yes Kim, I joked that I was glad she's in bed and missed that part as she'd be very verbal about it

blab (ID=201) (May 15, 2001 9:45:23 PM)
it helps the kids feel good about themselves to hear about the geniuses w/LD etc

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:45:42 PM)
I will mention it to her.

Diane (ID=198) (May 15, 2001 9:45:54 PM)
yes blab made a big difference for my son

Kim (ID=200) (May 15, 2001 9:45:59 PM)
I think we're all looking forward to that.

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:46:01 PM)
and also remind her they had to work very hard to get at their level

debbie (ID=184) (May 15, 2001 9:46:08 PM)
I'm headed to a seminar on FFW tomorrow.after I get off work....hopefully will pick up some new good info to share,,,,so im going to head out..gonna be along day tomorrow

blab (ID=201) (May 15, 2001 9:46:21 PM)
bye debbie

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:46:22 PM)

jbjb (ID=199) (May 15, 2001 9:47:45 PM)

Kim (ID=200) (May 15, 2001 9:48:03 PM)
I don't think my son would be interested.

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:48:04 PM)
Yes it's for the kids but most moms are there to type

blab (ID=201) (May 15, 2001 9:48:08 PM)
Mine is too big at least he thinks so

Diane (ID=198) (May 15, 2001 9:48:14 PM)

Mine is 13

jbjb (ID=199) (May 15, 2001 9:48:53 PM)
When were they diagnosed?

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:48:54 PM)
That kid was great telling about how he does things in school and what she can look forward to

blab (ID=201) (May 15, 2001 9:48:56 PM)
will he be on?

Diane (ID=198) (May 15, 2001 9:49:00 PM)
9.6 yo son here

blab (ID=201) (May 15, 2001 9:49:06 PM)
12 y/o

Kim (ID=200) (May 15, 2001 9:49:13 PM)
I don't know if he'd be interested, but I'll ask him

Kim (ID=200) (May 15, 2001 9:49:25 PM)
It might do him some good

jbjb (ID=199) (May 15, 2001 9:49:25 PM)
WOW, my daughter is so young. That makes me nervous.

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:49:31 PM)
don

Kim (ID=200) (May 15, 2001 9:49:43 PM)
Mine was 12 when diagnosed too.

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:49:46 PM)
sorry, I meant don't be nervous, just means you caught it early

Diane (ID=198) (May 15, 2001 9:50:05 PM)
right jbjb

blab (ID=201) (May 15, 2001 9:50:08 PM)
mine should have been dx earlier much earlier but he has so much going on they thought it was due to his ADHd or his VI

Diane (ID=198) (May 15, 2001 9:50:13 PM)
Carol is right

jbjb (ID=199) (May 15, 2001 9:50:33 PM)
Looking back, did you all see anything in the preschool years?

blab (ID=201) (May 15, 2001 9:50:47 PM)
wish we had caught it earlier having a hard time doing anything about it therapy wise at his age

Kim (ID=200) (May 15, 2001 9:50:48 PM)
oh yeah....just couldn't make anyone else see it.

Diane (ID=198) (May 15, 2001 9:50:52 PM)
blab the school SLP still tries to lean it to ADD

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:51:09 PM)
I would have had the diagnosis when she was 6 without waiting for appointments and going through channels. I saw problems with her frustration at 18 months

blab (ID=201) (May 15, 2001 9:51:15 PM)
it figures they would say that

Diane (ID=198) (May 15, 2001 9:51:19 PM)
same here I wanted him tested in 1st grade

jbjb (ID=199) (May 15, 2001 9:51:26 PM)
I just feel that she is so young and I already see problems related to it.

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:51:33 PM)
It got worse until I knew at 4 that there was a problem and handled it better

Kim (ID=200) (May 15, 2001 9:51:47 PM)
I did at a young age too. Nobody knew what it was though.

jbjb (ID=199) (May 15, 2001 9:51:50 PM)
what did you allsee in the preschool yrs?

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:52:02 PM)
I have the ADD diagnosis but no one at school believes it

kman (ID=202) (May 15, 2001 9:52:15 PM)
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart) (IP = 64.30.132.28)

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:52:19 PM)
frustration and questionable hearing loss

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:52:24 PM)
Hi kman, how are you?

blab (ID=201) (May 15, 2001 9:52:33 PM)
lots of signs w/20/20 hindsight I had no idea at the time he had loads of ear infections, tubes, always saying what? couldn't follow directions unless you gave them onea t a time right in his face etc

Kim (ID=200) (May 15, 2001 9:52:34 PM)
shy, withdrawn, not speaking much, lots of ear infections, funny walk, bad balance, frustration, the list goes on.

Diane (ID=198) (May 15, 2001 9:52:43 PM)
no rhyming for my son for one thing he just couldn't here them

kefta (ID=203) (May 15, 2001 9:52:45 PM)
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart) (IP = 65.96.108.120)

kman (ID=202) (May 15, 2001 9:52:58 PM)
hello.

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:52:59 PM)
Yes, blab, also the problems following directions and the ADD symptoms.

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:53:03 PM)
Hi kefta

blab (ID=201) (May 15, 2001 9:53:05 PM)
Carol do you have a girl? ADD w/out H?

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:53:13 PM)
yes

Kim (ID=200) (May 15, 2001 9:53:13 PM)
how true, and mispronounced words

Diane (ID=198) (May 15, 2001 9:53:15 PM)
misunderstanding what was being said lots and lots of frustration

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:53:23 PM)
yes, Diane

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:53:38 PM)
blab, I don't think she has ADD.

Kim (ID=200) (May 15, 2001 9:53:51 PM)
they said the same thing about my son

Kim (ID=200) (May 15, 2001 9:54:00 PM)
who dx'd the ADD?

blab (ID=201) (May 15, 2001 9:54:04 PM)
if they aren't H and aren't causing H in class it is easier for the teachers to ignore

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:54:19 PM)
Pediatric specialist at Children's Hosp in Boston

Kim (ID=200) (May 15, 2001 9:54:30 PM)
How did they make the diagnosis?

jbjb (ID=199) (May 15, 2001 9:54:35 PM)
her slp was amazed at how well adapted she is, happy, not frustrated considering her scores. rhyming is a probel, mostly word finding and puts her thoughts together poorly.

Kim (ID=200) (May 15, 2001 9:54:48 PM)
Has she seen an audiologist?

Diane (ID=198) (May 15, 2001 9:54:51 PM)
my son has no H but I really think that his APD has alot to do with attending

blab (ID=201) (May 15, 2001 9:54:51 PM)
if you can't hear and process you can't attend, focus, follow directions many of the same symptoms as ADD

Kim (ID=200) (May 15, 2001 9:55:36 PM)
We had my son on ritalin for about 2 months and saw no difference, so we took him off

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:55:37 PM)
The psychologist diagnosed her but when put together with education specialist and SLP audiology issues came up and that's when we were refered to the audiology clinic where we saw another SLP

Diane (ID=198) (May 15, 2001 9:55:38 PM)
exactly blab jbjb my son has always had the problem of searching for words

blab (ID=201) (May 15, 2001 9:55:47 PM)
mine got thru school before the dx b/c the mods for ADHD helped the APD symptoms too

Ronnie (ID=204) (May 15, 2001 9:55:48 PM)
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart) (IP = 24.184.215.105)

jbjb (ID=199) (May 15, 2001 9:55:57 PM)
they say she is too young for the complete cap testing by the audiologists. her hearingis perfect, trouble with background noise on the test

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:55:59 PM)
Hi Ronnie

blab (ID=201) (May 15, 2001 9:56:16 PM)

(This user has left DigiChat) (IP = 172.186.229.251)

blab (ID=201) (May 15, 2001 9:57:52 PM)
schools don't think they need to do anything for really smart kids w/problems b/c they can do about average or a little below struggling on their own

jbjb (ID=199) (May 15, 2001 9:58:19 PM)
I have been trying to find someone who aslo saw word finding problems in their child

blab (ID=201) (May 15, 2001 9:58:28 PM)
diane do they give him word banks for tests and writing assignments?

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 9:58:33 PM)
right blab and the stress they cause these kids is no wonder there are problems later on

Ronnie (ID=204) (May 15, 2001 9:58:52 PM)
Hi KIm-I have a daughter who is 17 years old. She has ADHD and recently I have discovered that she has CAPD. I have been looking into different speech therapy programs and into supplements. Does anyone have any good news about Pro Efa, etc. or aout Fast Forward. etc?

Diane (ID=198) (May 15, 2001 9:58:53 PM)
school wanted to retain him 1st grade I had him privately tested and he scored above average to superior in some areas

jbjb (ID=199) (May 15, 2001 9:59:12 PM)
my daughter knows she is 5, but to this day she cannot verbalize it. she shows five finger.

Diane (ID=198) (May 15, 2001 9:59:44 PM)
oh jbjb that is my son exactly at that age

jbjb (ID=199) (May 15, 2001 9:59:57 PM)

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 10:00:31 PM)
Ronnie, I don't know much about that but I know many on the listserv talk do.

blab (ID=201) (May 15, 2001 10:00:32 PM)
Mark had 9 1/2 years of therapy w/a speech therapist fora variety of language problems- articulation, pragmatics etc. noone ever mentioned APD until yrs later

jbjb (ID=199) (May 15, 2001 10:00:40 PM)
it is so hard for her to get her point across sometimes.

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 10:00:42 PM)
*HUGS* jbjb

Diane (ID=198) (May 15, 2001 10:00:52 PM)
I remember a car ride going to get his birthday party supplies for his 6th b-day I asked him how old he was going to be and he couldn't answer he held up 6 fingers

jbjb (ID=199) (May 15, 2001 10:00:56 PM)
thanks....

jbjb (ID=199) (May 15, 2001 10:01:28 PM)
wow..that is my child....

blab (ID=201) (May 15, 2001 10:01:35 PM)
does she also have apraxia issues or is it all APD?

jbjb (ID=199) (May 15, 2001 10:01:47 PM)
it took months to get her to recall her last name

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 10:01:48 PM)
My youngest does that sometimes still, a little over 6 and she says "Ahhhh" alot when talking

Diane (ID=198) (May 15, 2001 10:02:10 PM)
(This user has left DigiChat) (IP = 172.136.70.238)

jbjb (ID=199) (May 15, 2001 10:02:13 PM)
they say it is all related to APD

Ronnie (ID=204) (May 15, 2001 10:02:28 PM)
Does anyone have older children with CAPD?

jbjb (ID=199) (May 15, 2001 10:02:47 PM)
alot of her speech is flowing, then she loses words....

blab (ID=201) (May 15, 2001 10:02:50 PM)
does the speech therapist work on it w/her help her w/word finding and word planning

kman (ID=202) (May 15, 2001 10:02:54 PM)
My daughter is 10 years old and in the fifth grade.

blab (ID=201) (May 15, 2001 10:03:02 PM)
mine is 14 y/o now

jbjb (ID=199) (May 15, 2001 10:03:13 PM)
her sentances are put together wrong at times, hard to understand her because of that

blab (ID=201) (May 15, 2001 10:03:38 PM)
so she can do the thinking but it comes out wrong??

jbjb (ID=199) (May 15, 2001 10:03:39 PM)
yes, sheis learning to "cue" herself.

jbjb (ID=199) (May 15, 2001 10:03:55 PM)
yup...she knows what she means

blab (ID=201) (May 15, 2001 10:04:01 PM)
can she write OK?

jbjb (ID=199) (May 15, 2001 10:04:42 PM)
she is EXTREMELY artistic. she writes letters but cannot name most. her fine motor is excellent.

jbjb (ID=199) (May 15, 2001 10:05:18 PM)
she writes her name but does not know the letters she writes

jbjb (ID=199) (May 15, 2001 10:05:34 PM)
only "B", the first one.

blab (ID=201) (May 15, 2001 10:05:42 PM)
I ask b/c there is a therapy that works on writing that is supposed to also help w/speech fluency it helps the child but the processes together more fluently

Ronnie (ID=204) (May 15, 2001 10:05:54 PM)
My daughter is 17 years old and for her entire school career has had great difficulty is staying on task. She is on medication but it has never been totally productive. She can't follow an entire conversation and she seems to lose some information in the middle of the sentence. It has aways been attributed to her ADHD, but I know that there are other problems operating with her.

blab (ID=201) (May 15, 2001 10:06:24 PM)
has she been dx by an aud? Ronnie

Carol (ID=187) (May 15, 2001 10:06:29 PM)

blab (ID=201) (May 15, 2001 10:07:09 PM)

jbjb (ID=199) (May 15, 2001 10:08:05 PM)
Diane, did they dx your son with anything else related to the word finding prob?

Diane2 (ID=205) (May 15, 2001 10:08:32 PM)
He is also dyslexic jbjb

jbjb (ID=199) (May 15, 2001 10:08:42 PM)
They are treating her as CAPD, they jsut can't do the formal testing until she is 6-7.

blab (ID=201) (May 15, 2001 10:08:43 PM)
that happened to me last week diane

Diane2 (ID=205) (May 15, 2001 10:09:05 PM)

jbjb (ID=199) (May 15, 2001 10:11:05 PM)

blab (ID=201) (May 15, 2001 10:11:09 PM)
they both read above grade level

Diane2 (ID=205) (May 15, 2001 10:11:11 PM)
He just got accepted for an Orton-Gillingham tutoring program last Friday

jbjb (ID=199) (May 15, 2001 10:11:33 PM)
word retrieval is a big one.

kman (ID=202) (May 15, 2001 10:11:53 PM)
And who evaluates for dyslexia. The reason I ask is that my daughter is displaying some reversals in reading, but not in writing.

blab (ID=201) (May 15, 2001 10:11:56 PM)
OG is great My son's school, private school he went to for 1st and 2nd used that w/everyone

blab (ID=201) (May 15, 2001 10:12:30 PM)

Diane2 (ID=205) (May 15, 2001 10:12:55 PM)
I'm thrilled about it blab :) kman my son was dx'd by a ed physch

blab (ID=201) (May 15, 2001 10:13:23 PM)

Diane2 (ID=205) (May 15, 2001 10:13:34 PM)
I had my son thoruoghly tested visually by an ped opthamoligist

jbjb (ID=199) (May 15, 2001 10:13:39 PM)
the international dyslexia assoc web site is helpful. lists symptoms and what to do.

blab (ID=201) (May 15, 2001 10:13:41 PM)
oops wanted audiology not ist

Diane2 (ID=205) (May 15, 2001 10:14:27 PM)
yes it is good and letter reversal is a very small part of dyslexia kman

blab (ID=201) (May 15, 2001 10:14:42 PM)
did they check tracking isolating letters word groups differentiating shapes and symbols etc

kman (ID=202) (May 15, 2001 10:14:44 PM)
blab, we went the vision therapy first. After much reading the whole vision therapy theory seems lack credibility.

Diane2 (ID=205) (May 15, 2001 10:15:11 PM)
it affects all parts of language and I personally think it goes hand in hand with APD

blab (ID=201) (May 15, 2001 10:15:49 PM)
depends on the dx and the person doing the therapy. mine is legally blind but they helped him early on w/ tracking issues etc

Diane2 (ID=205) (May 15, 2001 10:16:16 PM)
Int dyslexia describes it as a language disability

jbjb (ID=199) (May 15, 2001 10:16:35 PM)
me too. i believe it comes down to phoneme processing and awareness, which is very difficult for kids with APD. The national reading council said Phoneme awareness is the most important indicator in ability to read.

blab (ID=201) (May 15, 2001 10:16:53 PM)
that is why OG is so good

Diane2 (ID=205) (May 15, 2001 10:17:12 PM)
I can't wait to start the O-G

jbjb (ID=199) (May 15, 2001 10:17:41 PM)
it makes sense to me, that it dyslexia goes with APD, What is O-G?

blab (ID=201) (May 15, 2001 10:17:56 PM)
my older son jumped 4 grade levels in testing after a year of Og in private school

Diane2 (ID=205) (May 15, 2001 10:18:03 PM)

They have centers all over the country and it is free

jbjb (ID=199) (May 15, 2001 10:19:26 PM)
What does O-G do? What skills does is work with?

blab (ID=201) (May 15, 2001 10:19:31 PM)
many of the LD and dyslexia websites have info or links on OG

jbjb (ID=199) (May 15, 2001 10:19:41 PM)

Diane2 (ID=205) (May 15, 2001 10:19:49 PM)

all the tutors for this center come from the University

kman (ID=202) (May 15, 2001 10:27:17 PM)
We had thought about a university setting, but then the school reading teacher said that if they don't know what they are doing it can be made worse.

Diane2 (ID=205) (May 15, 2001 10:27:50 PM)
OG is a proven therapy

blab (ID=201) (May 15, 2001 10:28:09 PM)
well the school where my sister was made it worse that is why she toroughly checked out the U program 1st and it has been great

Diane2 (ID=205) (May 15, 2001 10:28:11 PM)
been around for many, many years

kman (ID=202) (May 15, 2001 10:28:29 PM)

Diane2 (ID=205) (May 15, 2001 10:28:30 PM)
amen blab

Diane2 (ID=205) (May 15, 2001 10:28:42 PM)
yes kman

blab (ID=201) (May 15, 2001 10:28:45 PM)
if they are usung OG and not something else it is a pretty safe bet for dyslexia

kman (ID=202) (May 15, 2001 10:28:56 PM)
I believe we will probably head to Rochester for further testing.

Diane2 (ID=205) (May 15, 2001 10:29:06 PM)
